You don't mind not having full Lightroom on the iPad? I want the Lightroom CC Classic program on the iPad. The iPad can't export large files either as far as I know, only the desktop version can.I know PS will be full blown next year. But, what about LR? if I'm wrong about what I said, please let me know.
I also would like LR Classic, but I suspect the way Adobe is moving is to bring LR CC fully up to par with Classic and then discontinue Classic. I don’t believe they plan to continue having two LRs and suspect they only kept Classic because they knew serious pros would be really upset if they dumped it. LR CC *is* full LR to Adobe. Putting “Classic” in the name really indicates they feel its time is over. So we’ll likely just have to get used to the new interface and layout.

But, yeah, the announcement was full PS, no mention of LR.

Well,

My conundrum, should I keep the iPad pro or sell it. I just got the Gen3, which is awesome. I also got a new 15”MBP. My concern is, is this redundant?

Aside from the wireless part with the iPad, I’m not sure if there’s a reason to have this anymore for any reason other than, it’s a big iPhone.

I’m bad when it comes to buying stuff that I don’t need. Does anyone else have both and feel it’s a waste, or worth it?

I do photography as a side business if it helps. I have all the accessories too.

I understand it’s a smaller, more portable device. But, the MBP is pretty dam compact too.

I call on my fellow APPLE People

Thanks,
Tommy

sounds like you can't afford it anymore, move on, no one is forcing you to give Apple more money

Do you have both on your Mac? Classic CC and CC? I'm assuming we use both, but bring the pictures in on the CC version, then shut down and edit on Classic CC if you want more editing power.

I do have both installed, but I haven’t settled on a process yet. I only started editing photos on my iPad when I got the new Pro, so before November I was just using Classic on my Mac. My original plan when I got the iPad was to not use CC on the Mac at all, just Classic, but when I send stuff to CC on the iPad, all I get are thumbnails, and I want to edit originals. So maybe I have to use CC on the Mac to make that happen. If that’s the case, yeah, I’ll probably just use CC on both the Mac and iPad unless I need something it can’t do.

Adobe seems to do their major updates in the summer. I won’t be surprised if they match the CC feature set to Classic CC and discontinue Classic either summer 2019 or summer 2020.

I've been thinking the same. I seem to be using my iPad less and less. I've realized that I just can't replace my laptop with it. I also have come to realize I enjoy using plain old paper and pen for notes, rather than using the iPad. It's nice to use it for web browsing, but I tend to go for my laptop or phone more. The extra couple hundred $$ from selling it would be nice, but I'm afraid I'll regret it in the long run. I do really enjoy the iPad at times.

I will say, you can’t actually download to the LightRomm cloud from Classic CC. Only from Lightroom CC. Where it says destination folder, I can’t pic the cloud. Just my HD on the computer.

So, I guess that answers my question lol, unless I’m missing something.

So, my question to you is, can you do this with a laptop? Do you have another portable device? You get what I mean?
I guess you know the answer to this. If you want to use our MBP then just use that. I don’t always want to take my 15 inch MBP with me so my iPad Pro works great.

I got it for writing notes and multi-tasking (having an e-Book/textbook open in multi-task mode next to Notability), and presentations (playing a video and having notability next to it).

It has worked perfectly. For normal web browsing I have my 2012 MBP I also travel with, or I just browse on my phone.

I am still mergin all my libraries over from Aperture to Lightroom :) I stuck with the old dog as long as I could. Halfway through doing this, I sold both my computers to upgrade (2015 IMAC5k, 2012 MBP) - So my Lightroom workflow is still in the early stages. Mostly at this stage using classic, I am just taking time to organise my files ready to start a new year.

I just bought the new IPad 12.9 to try to figure how to use it in my workflow. As i photographer I really see it as a portfolio you can take anywhere, I have a massive stock library and to carry a range of shots in such a beautiful way daily makes me feel warm a fuzzy. I also think it is the future of photo editing, art, and using apps such as Astropad would like to use it as a Wacom down the track, I think all these areas will improve, hopefully even implemented into the new photoshop release.

At the moment I am without a computer, so cant really work on my Lightroom workflow, about to plunge on the new MacBook Pro, i just don’t have any other option even though the issues are out there.
I have had to do a couple of shoots without my computer, I have imported over wifi (Canon MK4) to iPad, Lightroom cc, also via SD card. I have noticed on many images within Lightroom CC red squares/corrupt info in many images once opened within IPAD CC, the images look fine in PHOTOS app (You must first import to PHOTOS APP before editing in LR)

I am also finding the export settings and compression seems poor, I cant really double check as I feel lost without my computer but the maximum files size I seem to be able to export is around 4-5MB from LR CC iOS, these are coming from a 30MB Raw file.

I must say to sketch my ideas out, Notability is just fantastic. I go from rough idea/sketch, then out in the field take notes, import test images into the note and continue to evolve the idea. Notability got me through my last degree and I still have all the notes synced to this iPad years later. I find that security invaluable, loving the iPad still, wish i could use my trackpad.

Good to know you can upload right to the iPad. I watched some videos on this. You can ONLY import to cloud via CC. I have 5DMKIII, so no wifi. I need a cable from the camera to USB-C, I guess. I have been importing to my iMac and then its on all my devices. I have found if you export using CC on the desktop and go to custom settings, make the long side pixels 5-6000, it exports at 7-9MB depending on what picture and how's its edited. Now, on iPad and iPhone, you can't do anything yet. It exports at what it feels. The problem is really that, you don't know what DPI it is. if it's at least 300, we should be good.

I'm a photographer as a side career, if you want to put it. You are a full time one? For you, it's much more important than for me. Classic CC has more editing power, but CC can do 90 percent of it which is great. Exporting sucks tho. If I need to upload to smug mug, I do it from the desktop/MBP via Classic CC. Do they make a WiFi dongle for the 5DMKIII?

You can get Wifi Sd cards I believe that adds the functions to MkIII.
I would also consider a USB-C card reader or adaptor to plug the camera directly into the IPad.

Lightroom CC mobile is just not cutting it as a professional choice, I believe it is really only working with the smart previews and therefor quality and size is poor. I am sure this has to change down the track, using photoshop MIX for layer work is something I am trying and i feel this also has great potential.

Using Lightroom to just display your catalogs i think is a great option but editing not yet, perhaps when full photoshop hits next year.

As a professional, well artist (Full time but not yet making a huge income) I find the IPad is great, it cant be a laptop yet but to add to the creative flow I think it is helping me. I have sketched out some of my best ideas recently and watching it all come together on the iPad is fantastic. I will need my MacBook Pro to produce the final work though.

Ok, thank you for the information. My next question is, do you know how to turn the red dot off on CC when editing? I can't see what I'm doing if I'm using the pencil. It's kinda silly lol.

I really liked the iPP 11” but I couldn’t justify it for $700 and returned mine the other day

My 12.9” 2017 jailbroken with ASK and pencil is still great for (now) free.. or at least no additional expense

Just did a bad thing and sold my 9.7” Pro two days after getting my 11” and then getting remorse since I dont wanna go too overboard on Apple, oh well one iPad should be sufficient for a while.

Watch and XR are enough for 2018 Apple moneys. A Part of me wants to ‘stick’ it to Apple too (not a big fan of some recent Tim Cook stuffs, but this isnt PRSI.. thats for another topic, and I know.. how much am i really sticking it to them by upgrading watch and iPhone? But I’ll be set for watch for a while, and got a standby gift card for if I upgrade my XR next year or following).. but also dont want another credit card bill for something thats not used for utility just leisure.

Old iPad prices are taking a big nose dive year over year too, despite sticker price going up and up year over year, so if I do want one down the road I’ll get one way cheaper

I just sold my 10.5 and picked up an amazon fire hd 10 for my tablet use. I can do everything I used my iPad for on the fire. I even have all the same apps and games installed on it that I had on my ipad. I'm done with ipads. I wanted it to be a laptop replacement but it cant. I still turn to my old mbp when I want to do actual computer stuff like editing documents, photos and music recording. The ipad should be no more the 599 for the best version until it can actually be a laptop replacment. Its funny reading people trying to defend it saying it's a laptop replacement. It's not and as long as iOS stays a blown up phone os it wont. It's just a very expensive media consumption device.

I love mine but I agree it’s no notebook , maybe that’s a good thing ?

iOS is so much more stable and easier to sort out when problems occur that I’m prepared to forgive its limitations compared to the macOS which just seems to get more and more buggy with every release.

o_O

For real?

Yup. A simple restart on the iPad vs streams of arcane unix commands when os x suddenly goes belly up and still no working Mac.

That’s my recent experience anyway

This is your money, other folks thoughts are moot. If YOU can’t think of a reason to have something you shouldn’t have it. Full stop

You dont need an ipad pro. I just personally like using it to browse. Def not worth the cash
The iPad is definite luxury item. If you feel it’s not worth it then get rid of it. But, I am seeing the tablet as the future of computing. In 2010 when I bought the iPad, it was an oversized iPhone. Now it’s becoming more flexible. I see professionals, architects, presenters carry one. I also think the pencil has added more functionality to this device, and it’s not just for artist. I just got mine and I’m perhaps biased but I’m looking forwards to using this device.
