Well,

My conundrum, should I keep the iPad pro or sell it. I just got the Gen3, which is awesome. I also got a new 15”MBP. My concern is, is this redundant?

Aside from the wireless part with the iPad, I’m not sure if there’s a reason to have this anymore for any reason other than, it’s a big iPhone.

I’m bad when it comes to buying stuff that I don’t need. Does anyone else have both and feel it’s a waste, or worth it?

I do photography as a side business if it helps. I have all the accessories too.

I understand it’s a smaller, more portable device. But, the MBP is pretty dam compact too.

I call on my fellow APPLE People

Thanks,
Tommy

Yes it's redundant, I have the 1st gen iPad Pro and I sketch a lot, which is the only time it gets use next to my macbook pro. If I didn't sketch, I wouldn't use it at all.

Granted I bought it purely for drawing, otherwise it wouldn't have been a consideration. I found way more use out of the iPad Mini as far as iPads go, since it's semi-portable for ferry or plane rides.

I bought an iPad Pro 11. I do have the Macbook 12. I just did not find a lot of use for it to justify its cost (ridiculously expensive). On the last day that I can return it, I returned it and I don't miss it at all

Literally the only thing I feel I’m limited by with my MacBook Pro is the drawing experience. But that’s available on the cheapest regular iPad now if you really need it.

I’m sure there’s lots of things that are quite nice on the newest iPad pros, but in terms of fulfilling real “needs” that other devices can’t, I personally still feel like iPads are way more in the indulgent end of the spectrum than essential.

I have both and new MacBook Pro 15 and 11” and would much more rather use the 11” for cruising the internet. Only use the laptop or desktop when I have too.

I have a 12” MB and 11” IPP. I definitely use my iPad for more casual stuff (i.e. web browsing and video consumption). My MB is used for grad school and Microsoft Office.

Do I need both? Not really. But each serve their own purpose since I don’t consider my IPP to be a laptop replacement.

It is nice to have options.

I guess it depends what you use either device for. Personally I’d sell the MacBook Pro, but I prefer the iPad and iOS. Whichever device you reach for more often, keep that one.

Same!

I bought my 12.9 for drawing, and I use my mini for pretty much all iPad-y things. Only difference for me is I’ve ended up using my 12.9 with the ASK for a lot of on the go light productivity as well since my 15” mbp is bulkier and almost always connected to a monitor on my desk.

Just thinking outside the box a bit. How about selling the MBP and getting a cheaper iMac or Mac Mini then use Screens or another remote desktop app when you're out or Astopad Luna display (at home) to essentially get MacOS on your iPad when you want something mobile. Lightroom is great with the pencil and the new PS should be awesome. Also you can then hook up to your Mac to use the iPP like a Wacom tablet.

You are suggesting he sells the 15" MacBook Pro that he's also just recently bought?

I have an even better suggestion. How about the OP buys what he actually needs without all this fannying around?

Yes. Exactly what I'm suggesting. It's just the way I work and thought I'd share. OP obviously doesn't know what he needs - hence the thread.

He knew enough to spend 1000's on hardware & then question it afterwards. Anyone with common sense would weigh up what they actually need & then make a sensible purchasing decision.

As a photographer I use the 12.9 3rd gen.
- Canon 5dmk4 connects wirelessly for tether shoot and reviewing/culling images, fantastic in the field to review.
- Lightroom CC I sync my portfolio and can show a client (Or potential client) anywhere, in crisp detail easily.
- notability to sketch out shoots, ideas, plans.
- Photo podcasts sound great.
- memory card reads raw files straight from iPad Pro, import sync to iCloud on my desktop when home.
- duet display works fantastically to expand my adobe workspace at home from my 15” mbp, 2 windows is great.
- jump desktop to connect and view folders on my Mac at home.
- great fro reading photo magazines.
- photoshop in 2019
- Procreate is fantastic to learn to compose, light and colour, drawing with the iPad pencil inspires me to draw out my ideas all in one place.

I’ve only had mine a week but that’s how I’m using it in my workflow.

For me, I have an iPP because I don’t use my MBP anymore. My iPP is way lighter, faster, and lasts longer than my MBP while still doing everything I need a computer to do, so I gave my wife my 2015 MBP to replace her 2012 and rely on my iPad now. If I were still using my MBP as my go-to portable computer, I’d be using a 9.7” iPad for basic consumption stuff and that’s it.

Nobody really "needs" an iPad (ok, that might not be technically true but you get my point). We have them because we want them. Yes, just about anything you could possibly do with an iPad could be done on a regular computer but that's not the point. I use an iPad Pro because it's the device I like using the most. It's also the device I prefer to travel with because it's lighter and more portable than a MBP.

I returned the 10.5 yesterday. It was great for drawing, but I couldn’t justify holding onto it for the price I paid. If it was $200 cheaper for everything new, then I would have kept it.

And even though the pencil lags a bit on the display and the 2gb of ram causes freeze ups, I find I like drawing better on the 2018 iPad than the Pros. Yes that is weird. I like the art I produced better on the 2018 than the 10.5, so back to the 2018 iPad.

Lightroom is also not all here either. You need Lightroom Classic CC for full editing. I thought that was on this iPad, but sadly not. I said to myself, well I'll keep it and use for photo editing and what not. But I don't even have full Photoshop and using the pencil is hard because there's a red dot on the screen. I can't be precise with that! lol
[doublepost=1543623222][/doublepost]I'm way past my return policy, so, I'm stuck with it lol. I'm not losing money it just yet. But this with paying 20 a month for unlimited data is ehhh. I wish the MBP would have built in LTE.

Sorry this doesn't help, but I too am waffling on this. I thought about consolidating my iPad and old MBP for a new Air or 12" Macbook, but I just love the 15" MBP form factor too much. Maybe what I want is a new 15" MBP, and a 12" Macbook, but that seems wastefully redundant as well.
Buy them all...then send them back. Its the MR way. Whatever you
do, don't make a serious inventory of your tech needs or spend time with the
product in an Apple store. Apple can afford it.

You are right on that. I have always had the iPad Pro, since it's been out. I knew I needed a laptop as well. But, since I use both a lot, I was thinking well, maybe I don't really need this ect... Now, I went to a few places without WiFi but since my iPad is Att, I used it without problem and enjoyed it.

I guess I can say each device has it's place for what you want to do with it. But again, I agree. I should do more research, instead of spending money like water.

You don't mind not having full Lightroom on the iPad? I want the Lightroom CC Classic program on the iPad. The iPad can't export large files either as far as I know, only the desktop version can.I know PS will be full blown next year. But, what about LR? if I'm wrong about what I said, please let me know.

In general, many average consumers don’t _need_ the iPad Pro. The 2018 iPad I’m sure is more than sufficient now that it has Apple Pencil support and it’s a media device first for most who purchase the iPad as it is. The Pro has distinct upgrades and of course Face ID, but one would have to appreciate those upgrades and what they have to offer.

I fully agree! I'm learning that.

OP’s view is exactly the way I see things. The problem is that Apple has gimped the iPad in rather big ways. Even just letting us use a desktop version of Safari would go miles towards making this a laptop replacement. Or being able to run multiple versions of the same app. Little stuff like that makes a laptop so much easier to use.
