Companies pull ahead here and there and at times it will be one or another, as will always be the case, and while there's perhaps some "shaming" that happens when something truly on that level happens, it doesn't seem like anything like that has happened here.

Yeah, I would agree "shaming" isn't the right word in this case either. But as you already know, I also argue that Apple could and should step up their game now that the landscape and competition has changed.

@C DM , Genuine question: I'm curious on your take in context to the "ebb and flow" point from your below quote (which I agree with), do you see anything from Apple's rumored pipeline that suggests they'll pull ahead in the near future?

I'm not sure I see anything that would make a difference. And I'm excited about a lot. Maybe the contactless wireless charging, or their take on a curved screen iphone in 2017, or perhaps what I'm most excited about: seeing a true front display that can incorporate the finger print scanner underneath so we can be rid of the physical home button... But even these things, which I would love, to me don't seem enough from Apple to pull ahead. There's nothing there really that the competition can't match, or will have already ventured into.

Maybe if they tighten their ecosystem? For better or worse, that is really effective. It keeps people on iOS who find great convenience in it. And yet also has driven people away who don't want what they would consider being locked down.

I'm curious if you see anything that would really put them ahead. Apple home kit?

I (nor anyone else really) don't have any idea of what's coming and, more importantly, what impact it might or might not have when it comes and/or down the road. Beyond that there's basically just speculation and wishful thinking, which is basically not much more than exactly what they are. What I bright up (and, as you mentioned, you agreed with) didn't really have much to do with any of that.

Sure. This is a rumor website and the general idea is we're here to discuss rumors. Of course we don't really know what will be what or have what effect. I would say that leaks these days -- especially for Apple -- have gotten fairly reliable. At the very least, enough to have discussions for those interested. This is the sort of stuff we get excited (or disappointed) about.

If the position is, we don't really know what Apple will release down the road and so everything we're discussing essentially has no merit yet, then it begs the question why come here to discuss anything. Much of it will be commenting on rumors and leaks.

If I say something along the lines of "I don't see anything in Apple's pipeline that shows me that they'll pull ahead of the competition" that's of course based solely on the limited information I have. I can be corrected. I'd be happy to be corrected by Apple.

There are certainly well beyond plenty of things to discuss outside of rumors and speculation as plenty of threads demonstrate in all kinds of sections of the forums here. It's not to say that discussions of rumors and speculations aren't or shouldn't be there, but that there's much much more that gets discussed outside of those.

Of course. I suppose this is the wrong thread to be asking you for your take on future products from Apple, so perhaps another time and place then. Thanks for answering though.
