I've been working toward a perfect month, so imagine my surprise earlier today when I discovered that my activity rings were way off. After returning from grocery shopping while wearing my Apple Watch, I had only logged 1 active calorie. But I also had reached my stand goal every hour since 9 pm last night, even though I was sleeping for most of it (while wearing the watch). Something was definitely off.

Long story short, I discovered the culprit: my cat.

I have a Withings Body Smart scale, and the Withings app is connected to the Health app so Health can use my current weight. After scratching my head for awhile, I noticed that my average weight in Health had been cut almost in half. This was causing incorrect calculations for activity.

The reason my average weight had dropped is because one of my cats likes to sit on the scale. Normally, the scale is smart enough to know that I am not standing on the scale, but it has a feature where you can manually select a user by shifting your weight from side to side. Apparently, my cat activated my profile on the scale and logged his weight as mine, and Health just blindly averaged it in even though it was a small fraction of my prior average weight (you would expect it to know better than to do that, but it doesn't).

After I deleted the erroneous data point, everything went back to normal. For good measure, I reset the calibration and went for an outdoor walk per Apple's instructions.

My cat is a bit of a rascal but it took me awhile to connect the dots on this one. I love my Apple Watch so I was quite concerned that there was some software bug messing with my data. Turns out, it was just tech that is not foolproof.

That's hilarious! 🤣

😂 so you use the smart scale to determine the weight for your Activity rings? I don’t have one but I set the weight based on my last checkup.

Since I got an Apple Watch I am now obsessed with data. I have a Bluetooth scale, a Bluetooth thermometer, a Bluetooth blood pressure cuff, a Bluetooth toothbrush - whatever data I can import, I will. This includes wearing the watch while I sleep. Health app (and other some apps) digests all of it and I think that makes the activity rings and trends more accurate. They are all wild estimates to begin with, so more data should help. Unless my cat interferes. 😂

Darn really?! Are they compatible with Apple HealthKit? You can also turn it off to keep collecting data on the scale unless the cat isn’t near the scale!

Nope, nothing at all, just the “usual” sync issues between phone and iCloud that are frequently reported here. Looks like everything is back to normal”normal” now
Ohhh I see. Are you running iOS 18.2 beta and/or watchOS 11.2 developer beta versions?
