Surprises me that so many people keep their Macs hooked up to docks
MagSafe has already saved mine from tumbling off the desk around rowdy cats

I used a 2013 MBA until last week. Mag Safe feature was so much premium, I loved it and already miss it.
I bought a second handed 2020 M1 MBA, which is great, but it lacks the Mag Safe. I even thought to purchase a Mag Safe adaptor to this USB-C cable! 🤣

Ten years ago, the 2013 MBA had 10 hours of battery. Let's see if M1 conquers me has the 2013 did.

I got my new MBP in February, and I can't say I've used it much... love having it when I'm away from my desk. But most of the time, I'm using it at my desk connected to a TB4 dock.

Will say this though: It's really nice having both options. USB-C at home while my MagSafe 3 charger can just live in my bag full-time. Couldn't do that with MagSafe 2 prior to USB-C. And USB-C only certainly felt like a downgrade.

Plan on using it when I'm traveling. Otherwise I'm plugged into my ASD.
This is exactly my situation with my 14” MBP. I keep it plugged into an LG Ultrafine 5K while at my desk, when working outside or using it on the couch it is unplugged completely, and only when travelling do I bring and use the MagSafe charger.

Yep! Loving it on my M1 Pro since day, actually got it in my travel bag (at home I'm mostly connected to a TB4 dock)

It's pretty good for charging and frees up a USB-C/TB port on the go which is amazing for me for when I'm at the office and have to connect to multiple stuff.

Regarding the 'saving the laptop' feature it did work when I was at the office a couple of weeks ago.

I use mine in clamshell mode connected to a 4K display via a dock and the power adapter and USB-C cable are all on my desk. No chance for anyone or any animal to trip over it.

I use magsafe all the time. It charges miles faster than USB-C. Not to mention it saved my Macbook Pro when my dog tripped the cable in the living room as I was using it on the couch.

It only charges faster on the 16" MacBook Pro. If you use a 67 W power adapter on the M2 MacBook Air for example, I'm pretty sure it charges at the same speed over both MagSafe and USB-C—it fast charges up to 50% in 30 minutes.

It fast charges on the 14 inch too if you have a 96w charger, which I do.

What this means is AC adapters and cables aren't lying on the floor. Cables are now on the table and the danger of tripping is much reduced.
I don't follow at all. The cables are still cables, whatever they're plugged into. Why does them being USB-C make a difference to whether they're on the floor or not?

You don’t trip over a USB-C cable coming from your monitor because those are sitting on your table. I don’t know anybody who uses the power adapter anymore. Everyone has a USB-C monitor or dock.

If you’re traveling, you’re far better off carrying a 20,000 mAH battery bank with 10W overnight charger. USB-C banks sit on the desk and don’t pose a tripping hazard. The bank can power your iPhone and MacBook on the road and can be charged overnight.

In addition, most desks in office and study spaces have power outlets on the table itself. You’d have to be in a rudimentary workspace to be plugging power bricks near the floor. MagSafe is far less relevant today.

Many people who shifted to WFH in the past couple years probably have a USB-C monitor with at least 65W PD. Decent monitors now come with a built-in USB hub with Ethernet. Unless you’re a student, it’s almost weird to not have MacBook plugged in a monitor or dock.

My plan was to ditch it and have a single USB-C cable in my laptop bag, as that type of cable can charge so many other things as well. But I ended up bringing the MagSafe anyway.

Like people say, it frees up a port. 🤷‍♂️

At home the TB4-dock ends up charging the MacBook. Or if I don’t dock it, it usually goes into my perma-installed table USB-C charging cable.

I just use the USB-C cord. I don’t have a dedicated desk area, so my laptop and iPad just side on a side table. Easier to use the same cord for both. I wish my iPhone also charged via it as well.

USB-C does not fast charge any MacBook; MagSafe does on all of them if you use the correct brick.

Sure it does.

It's only above 100W that MagSafe has any benefit over USB-C in terms of charging speed. M2 MBA for instance is limited to 70W, so you don't get any benefit with 96W or 140W bricks.

Orthopedic shoes, I stand corrected.

Late to the game, but I use MagSafe and won't let anyone with a MBP 16" M1 Max or Pro not use MagSafe. Why risk it. Plus it leaves 4 ports open for cables and I often have all 4 ports in use during a photo processing session.

I'd imagine the next generation of the 16" MBP will also allow fast charging with USB-C if you have a high-power USB-C charging cable. It is likely that the next generation will have the latest Power Delivery version which allows for more than 100 W of charging. Apple took a shortcut with this generation of 16" MBP probably because the PD spec wasn't released yet.
