I don't have a magsafe mac but I like the magsafe more than usb-c especially when I am not docked.
The usb-c isn't the strongest and it constantly keeps getting unplugged on the slightest laptop movement.
The lack of magsafe on macbook pro 13 is why it isn't in my consideration list.

Yes I am using it.
A lot of times I am using an ethernet dongle and I am charging my phone through the usb-c ports on the left of my 14" MBP. I could charge my MBP on the right but then my OCD kicks in.

Yes. I upgraded from a Macbook Pro that had magsafe to a new 14 inch MBP with magsafe. I don't have anything yet that uses usb-c yet so I don't have any extra cords.

I leave my 16" from work docked on a Thunderbolt cable, but use my 14" more on the go or at least not in my office, so it usually gets charged on MagSafe. I was completely ambivalent about it at first, then used it on a work trip and fell back in love with it right away.

I like the little led. A few time it reminded me my machine was not up to 100% for a flight

I hope they never get rid of MagSafe again. I don’t have trip hazzards but the ability to connect and disconnect MagSafe so easily when I come and go is awesome. It sounds trivial but it makes life smoother for me anyway

I would have gotten the 13 M2 MBP if it had MagSafe to replace my 13" 2015 MBP. I got the 14" MBP today primarily because of MagSafe as it's like having added insurance when the AppleCare runs out.

Just curious if anyone is really using MagSafe now that it’s back.

I know mostly everyone missed it when it was gone, even myself but I’m just so used to having USB-C has the one cable to charge my devices and connected to a hub to just use one port for docking to a larger display, charging etc… I haven’t used MagSafe at all.
All the time. Primary method charging.

I had a MagSafe MacBook for about 7 or 8 years, switched to a mini, then recently bought an 13" M1 MBP.

I really miss being able to pick it up, flip off the MagSafe, and go about my day. Now I have to be a little careful with the USB-C cable since I don't want to put excess strain on the port. When I bought this, I didn't have much of a choice (I couldn't justify the extra cost for the 14" MBP) but hopefully my next Mac has it.

this isn't normal behaviour. the thing about MagSafe is it disconnects more easily than USB-C so that laptops don't end up getting pulled from the floor. If you USB-C port is constantly becoming unplugged, there could be an issue with either the port or the cable you're using.

i've used magsafe exclusively since it came back. my external monitor does not have usb c and i'm not getting a different monitor just for that. instead i use magsafe and hdmi and i still have 3 usbc ports open. and obviously i have the flexibility to charge with usb c if the need arose. so i don't see any down sides.

I could not agree more with you - as I contemplate a move from my ol' 2011 MBPro to a newer Air or Pro.

The L-shape should be a MagSafe standard.
I personally don't like the L shape, its too loose. I much prefer the standard magsafe

Yes, MagSafe is typically the only cable I have connected to my MBP if there is any cable connected at all. I don't use it as a desktop machine with an external monitor like many seem to do. (I have a Mini for that)

This thread should be retitled “Now that MagSafe is back - is anyone actually using their laptop on their lap?”

Coming from a 2016 MBP 16” that developed loose and finicky usbc ports from being used as a laptop, the return of MagSafe is a relief. I did really like the L-shaped MagSafe of yore, though— that’s just about the only thing I’d change about the current incarnation.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the other thing I’d change would be to have a MagSafe port on both sides. Or maybe just one on the back. I guess I might also change it to not use permanent magnets— IIRC, when I thought about that years ago due to metal chips following me around, my back of the napkin calculations led me to believe that the power necessary wasn’t problematic if designed correctly.

Hmm... I have had this experience with almost all the usb-c macbooks that I have used(my wife's, both my office laptops)
I find that more safety with mag safe. They don't hold tightly but at the same time aren't as finicky as usb-c IMO.

To be honest I love MagSafe. But with USB-C, Thunderbolt, charging in one connector packed with superior battery life I don’t find it as much needed feature. I charge my MacBook only to 80% and it lasts me 3 days sometimes. And the time my MacBook is charging takes about 30-45 minutes. The return of MagSafe is more about pandering to the Steve Jobs crowd then what’s needed today. And that comes from a guy who’s definitely in the Steve Jobs team.
