I have the dell P2715Q so it is very similar. been working on it all day in 4k or 2560x1440..and it is perfectly happy. Other resolutions give it fits. this seems to be a cure for me and a solid system now. Have to say I don't really understand it, but if this works, I am not going to knock it. Was thinking i made a huge mistake on the whole thing.

Final update. Whew, GTX 980 ti works great in the mac pro. All my problems come from trying to run a 4k monitor. What I didn't understand is that Yosemite is now doing UI scaling in the background. So with a scaled resolution of 2560x1440 the OS is oversampling that 2x and then dumping it to the screen. If I select a custom resolution of 3840x2160 (4k) the OS is oversampling that a staggering 2x. That would choke any system!! So, if you want to run the 4k resolution as native pixels, you need to select a resolution in the display panel that has (low resolution) behind it. Then the OS won't over sample it for Retina smoothing. I finally landed on using 2560x1440 with retina smoothing on and taking advantage of the 4k's tiny pixels.
So my GTX 980 Ti was working perfectly until this evening. All of a sudden the fans have sped up to 1800 RPM under OS X. There's no reason for it. I boot into Windows and the thing does the same thing so long as the three screens are working.
I'm using three monitors -- 30" Apple Cinema display, 27" Apple Display, and a Wacom 12" Cintiq.
Any suggestions?

I just plugged my GTX 780 Ti Classified back in and everything is now operating as normal. The Expansion Slot fan is running over 900 RPM, but dropping still. The Power Supply fan is spinning at 600 RPM.
I am hoping something isn't wrong with the GTX 980 Ti. It was working perfectly earlier today until I used Toast to burn some movies. I started getting some weird errors, and the DVDs I inserted wouldn't mount. I am not sure whether any of that is related, however.
I am going to reinstall the 980 Ti and see if things go back to normal.

It's a common bug. Run Cuda Z performance test for 2 secs and quit the app. You will see the fans drop to normal.
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately that hasn't seemed to work.
I unplugged one of my monitors (the Wacom Cintiq) and everything went back to normal. If I plugged it back in, the fans would shoot right back up. I have my 27" and the Cintiq connected using a mini-display port to display port, and a DVI to display port adapters.
I ran the Cuda Z performance test with only two monitors connected and the fans shot right back up. Now they are staying that way regardless if the Cintiq is connected or not.
EDIT: By unplugging and replugging in the Cintiq a few times I finally got the fans to start dropping again...but I have to leave the Cintiq unplugged for it to work.
I am wondering if there's a problem with this card running multiple displays, or maybe there is a problem with the DVI to display port adapter I am using.
EDIT: The problem only arises when I have all three screens running. If I have the 30" and Cintiq together, it's fine; if I have the 30" and 27" attached, it's fine; if I have the 27" and the Cintiq connected, it's fine. It's only when all three are plugged in that the problem rears its head.

I have now tried resetting the SMC and the NVRAM. Neither worked. I had the Cintiq connected with the other two monitors for well over 48 hours and there were no problems. I wonder how this got started... 
The same thing is happening under Windows 7 64 bit with the three monitors attached.

I'm powering it from an AUX 750 watt external PSU. I have both the 8-pin and 6-pin cable connected.
I exchanged the GTX 980 Ti and everything has gone back to normal. It must have been a fault with the card.
I just hope that non of my adapters are causing some sort of a short. I only have two days left if I need to exchange again.

When the system is acting normally the Expansion Slot fan spins at around 800 RPM and the Power Supply fan at 600 RPM.
Now, with only two monitors plugged in, the Expansion Slot fan is spinning at 1020 RPM.
Everything was working fine until I shut down my computer to see why my second Blu-Ray player wasn't being recognized (it usually is). I shut the system down, unplugged the computer and turned the external PSU off. I pulled out the Blu-Ray player and inspected it, and switched plugs with the other unit. I turned the computer back on and that's when this whole thing started again.

It's a PC Card. It sends the Mac signals that the SMC can't always understand. If it comforts you I run most of my fans 200-300rpm higher than default anyway and it doesn't bother me. I always have some kind of music or movie playing in the background.
Interesting. Even if the Expansion Slot fan was spinning at 1000 RPM it wouldn't be too bad, it's just at 1400-1500 RPM that it gets a bit loud. I never seemed to have this problem with my GTX 780 Ti Classified. Anyways, I'm glad the fix is easy enough. Thank you again for your response.
There's a sticky FAQ thread at the top of this forum with links to all the drivers, yeah.
so I have had the new driver in for a day. Safari and messages crashes every few minutes. Photoshop will crash if you try to do any image processing. It's totally unstable...How do I revert a driver back to previous version? I'll take slower speed and no name showing up over everything crashing.
