I’ve never seen anyone using an Apple Watch case, so I’m not sure what the complaint is here… but they’re definitely more fragile than ordinary watches. My kid dropped mine once onto a hard floor, and the glass shattered.
That's what my wife did last time.

Cost to replace wasn't significantly higher than the cost to repair, so I replaced it.

I could probably drop my Seiko Big Boss on the same tile floor multiple times without breaking the glass.

I think we baby these devices because they’re so damn expensive!
Also if you take care of the device it will yield a higher resale value. Personally, I take pride in keeping my stuff nice.
:)
All that said I’d never put a case on my watch. Definitely on my phone though because I find them slippery without.

As I remember it, protective phone cases pretty much started with the original iPhone. Before that, phones were about practicality first (durable grippy plastics, ergonomic size and shape), and the fashion aspect was secondary or not even a thought. I remember some people (especially in Asia) would customize their phones with third party accessories, but it was all aftermarket, and not widespread.

Then the delicate, expensive iPhone entered the scene, and the entire industry followed suit. And a lot of consumers felt the need for a case. But cases were still mostly optional, only for the more protective/worried/careless/clumsy, because phones at the time were still small one-handed devices, easy to hold and use without dropping. It’s just that if you did drop it, there was a lot more at stake.

But now that phones are huge and even more expensive (and still delicate), cases are mostly mandatory, unless you’re resolved to be extremely careful and mindful, which is a big ask for most people.

I saw exactly how we got here, yet it doesn’t make complete sense to me either. Buying something at least partially for its beauty (look and feel), then covering it up with a case—I understand why, but the contradiction (and irony?) in the situation is undeniable. But it’s what the people want. As long as people want big, expensive, and especially delicate phones, there will most likely always be cases covering them.

I'm careful not to break it because I need it. Hence I put it in a case.

I don't care about minor scratches or loosing paint (which seems to be common). I do want the screen work properly though.

Currently, I have a case with extra air pockets and a transparent foil as additional screen protector. Folding cases did start to annoy me, and they also failed to keep the sand away from the iphone that scratched my last screen.

I always go naked and don’t get upset about the occasional small scratch. Phones are tools to be used, not artworks to be preserved in pristine condition. A case would only makes it heavier and bulkier, a total turn-off.
Total turn off? Green bubbles and cases on iPhones . Ickkkk! 😂

Interesting topic that's gone on for a surprisingly long time. I've always used cases and screen protectors, and I have occasionally dropped the phone or had it slide off someplace where I placed it. And even though I have Applecare+, I'd rather not have to repair the phone and have it unavailable for an extended length of time. That being said, it's none of my beeswax how anyone else uses their phone.

I've worn watches for most of my life...including adventurous conditions. Never broken one.

I’ve only ever broken one watch in my life - I passed out from a bleeding ulcer and was on a raised bench. When I hit the floor I cracked three ribs and the crystal on my Guess watch.

I loved that watch.

For the record, since I don’t have an Apple Store near me (it’s an hour drive), any time I’ve used AppleCare they overnighted me the replacement phone. Never a repair, just a replacement.

Once was for signal issues and one was for back glass breaking (ironically, while in a case. Dropped it naked and didn’t have the glass break but it broke in a case ).

You have a funny definition of "not near".

fwiw, here's a horrible MBA webcam pic of the back of my encased iP13. The back is a translucent gray so you can make out the Apple logo, and the blue phone color is visible in the lens cutout. It's not as pretty encased, but I don't think it's horrible. I didn't get a clear case because I've yet to come across one where reviewers haven't noted that it turned yellow.

So I can drive to Ottawa and deal with the traffic and nuisance of the Rideau Centre location and making an appointment around my schedule, or I can have a temporary hold on my credit card and have a replacement overnighted to me.

Yeah. I can see why the drive at the price of gas and the PITA driving in Ottawa is, not to mention the 2+ hour round trip not including time at the store and trying to work that into my schedule, would be the choice I’d make over the option of overnight courier.

Funny, whenever I’ve spoken to AppleCare they’ve offered the overnight courier because the distance is what they considered an inconvenience to me.

What kind of case?

I clean my phone each week by removing it from the case and wiping it clean with a wet cloth & disinfectant as the phone, by this point, will be covered in dirt, dust and germs. I consider myself a clean person though, I guess you aren’t?

I also clean my house… does that require therapy too?
I also close my toilet lid before flushing.
