It's not normal to obsess over scratches and such. Some people claim to clean their phone weekly. Those people need therapy.
I clean my phone each week by removing it from the case and wiping it clean with a wet cloth & disinfectant as the phone, by this point, will be covered in dirt, dust and germs. I consider myself a clean person though, I guess you aren’t?

I also clean my house… does that require therapy too?

I've replaced the cracked up screen protector on my wife's phone at least 10 times. I've never had to replace mine.

I don't know what she is doing with that thing, but she sure is hard on electronics - she has left a long list of dead electronics in her wake.
My wife has her 11PM in a case and it's a good thing. She tends to knock her phone around and it often gets dropped off the bed. It's hit the frame rails and her desk on the way down a few times. Right now her case is neon yellow so she can spot it when she forgets where she put it down.

And case-users in this thread, I just said I do not use a case - not that my wife doesn't. :D

When I worked at a carrier store I met a lot of people who didn't think their phones needed cleaning. I kept wipes and hand sanitizer on the counter for all the grease and crust I was forced to touch every day 🤢 Basic hygiene is not "obsessive" in the slightest. Every germ your hands pick up throughout the day gets transferred to your phone, I read somewhere that phones are the single dirtiest item people own. I clean my phone and wipe down my purse once a week too, I can't even count how many times I've been in a public restroom and see the woman in the next stall set her purse down on the floor. I've seen phones sitting on bathroom floors too. Some people are either clueless or just plain nasty.

Offt, that’s nasty. Some people have no concept of personal hygiene! 🤢

I agree, phones are probably the filthiest item in your possession so cleaning it wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

I don't know where this fits but I just have this little piece of dirt/dust underneath the screen protector and my OCD is fixated on it. It is a tiny little piece and not very apparent. Part of me wants to return the phone and get a new one just for this issue but then again, the dirt/dust issue might happen again. Not sure what to do.

What's a good way to clean the phone and case without damaging them?

You clearly need to upgrade your phone. Even if it is the same model, it wi be newer than the one you have now.

If your phone is IP67 or IP68 it is pretty much waterproof so difficult to damage. Clean your phone with a wet cloth and then a microfibre cloth to remove the streaks. If you have a non-fabric case, just wash it under the tap with soap.

Once every week or longer I use 70% isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel to wipe iPhone screen and body after taking the case off and washing case under warm water with 7th Gen dish soap liquid and dry thoroughly. Works well to keep iPhone hygienic.

I wipe down my phone and case with a Lysol wipe around once a week, or when I get back from the grocery store, someplace like that. Then I use a damp microfiber cloth to sort of rinse away the wipe residue.

Reading this forum it seems many of us are really careful with our (new) iPhones.

Some of us buy Pro partly because of the looks but then we slap a case on it and hide all the beauty to protect it.

Some of us go naked but then we stress it and get upset if there is even a small scratch on it.

My question is - is this normal? When did phones become these jewelry like items that we handle with kid gloves?
Resale. Get back as much as you can. And take care of the blessings you're afforded to.

🤣 Nothing like an internet forum to help you to decide! 🤣

I like to enjoy whatever I buy so cases are not for me. That being said, I still get why people use cases in phones, even headphones and stuff. I don’t like it, I have a million things to say about the mentality, but I get it and I respect it.

But you know what really grinds my gears?
Watch cases.
It just blows my mind that EVERY watch on the planet from $200 to 1.000.000 was fine, but the moment you get an Apple Watch you have to protect it with a plastic case and a flimsy screen protector.

Wife dropped her Watch 3 and broke it.

I replaced it.

She dropped her second Watch 3 and broke it.

When I replaced the second one with an SE, I gave it to her with a flimsy screen protector and rubbery sort of case installed.

I don't think that's unreasonable.

How you drop a watch in the first place? My only interaction with it is when I drop it on the charger and then put it back on my wrist, once a day.

I don’t know, maybe if she pays herself next time she will be more careful? 😂

Have it in your hand and let go.

Have it on your desk and knock it off.

Beats me.

We have "shared finances", none of this "my money, your money" nonsense that strikes me as completely bizarre for normal married people. I bought it because I'm the one with the Apple Card that gets 3% cash back.

I’m just joking mate!
I wear watches basically all my life and never broke one so i literally can’t understand how can that happen (I mean from a drop, not you falling or something).

I've worn watches for most of my life...including adventurous conditions. Never broken one.

I’ve never seen anyone using an Apple Watch case, so I’m not sure what the complaint is here… but they’re definitely more fragile than ordinary watches. My kid dropped mine once onto a hard floor, and the glass shattered.
