Just make a Catalina VM, attach my PCIe NVMe as a disk and install Catalina normally ( no boot-arg )? Must use Parallels PRO- Is that the basic method for cMP??

boot-arc has to be always set, when using a non-patched Catalina!
i have set the boot-arc in Recovery of the physical Mac

General question: anyone know if GTX 680s are still supported in Catalina, or did they pull the drivers? I havent had a chance to check yet

Both the 2GB and the 4GB still working over here. Also the GeForce GTX 780 ist still fine.

Awesome, thanks!!

Also, I wonder, given that, if leaving the drivers in was a nod to people running Catalina unofficially on 5,1s.

What is the best way to download Catalina since I can't get it from App Store on my Mojave 10.14.6 5,1??

There have been quite a few reports of the display port not giving a video output on the latest Catalinas with the GTX680. Does not seem to affect everyone (mine seems fine although back to a RX580 now)) but there is certainly an issue for some. Other outputs seem fine though. This has happened to 2GB and 4GB versions so be prepared for a black screen if using the display port.

Has anyone got Continuity & Handoff working? If so, how?
The BT WI-FI card is upgraded my 5,1 and everything works fine in Mojave
It always been a hassle getting continuity to to work, but I’ve tried all of the usual fixes...
Log out and back into iCloud on the Mac and iphone
Reset Bluetooth module
Added Continuity.Support true to IOBluetooth.framework
Restarted

What else is there to do to make this work?

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up, I can always fall back to a different connection if needed I guess. I'll post here when I update if I encounter it, or not.

Try this, it worked for me with beta 8. Since then it has worked OOB with all the later betas and official release. Do not know why but fix stuck!

What about the claimed removal of the Series 7 Sata Support?

What about the claimed removal of the Series 7 Sata Support?

A lot of 2012 Catalina officially supported Macs use Intel Series 7 SATA, like MBP 2012/Mac mini 2012, so I doubt it.

If Apple removed SATA support for MP5,1, I did not verified the veracity of this yet, it’s trivial to add back.

Edit: Nothing changed with MP5,1 support.

Just checked, ICH10 SATA still supported with Catalina 10.15.1 DP2. Series 7 is even newer than ICH10…

So, it seems Catalina 10.15.1 DP2 has GPU drivers for AMD Navi (5700 and 5700 XT). I'm curious if those GPUs will work on the MacPro5,1 -- will the power supply handle it? Tests for the 5700 XT seems to show they require up to 390W when fully taxed.

Anyone willing to try? ?

I have installed Catalina using "dosdude" Patcher in my Mac Pro 5,1. It is working fluently with no issues after three days of use. My old Broadcom Wifi card is even working.

I am a follower of "Tsialex". I think he is a genious. I am completely grateful for his job here. I was able to transform my MacPro 4,1 in 5,1 and doing all changes to have Mojave even although I am just a simple user.

I know "tsiaiex" recommend a native Catalina and not a patched one.

I wonder what kind of problems could I have using my patched Catalina vs a native Catalina using the procedures described here. All considering I´d need a new wifi card ( 40 to 70 euros in Ebay ) and it seems there are no options of direct updating from both procedures.

I do not think you will have any problems. The patcher does not make many changes For the cMP5.1. Here is a link for you that gives details of the patches: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-15-catalina-on-unsupported-macs.2183772/post-27879279
As you have found it does make the old Wi-Fi work and if you want you can have night shift.
However, if you upgrade the Wi-Fi/BT card then you can use the patcher without any patches and get a “vanilla” Catalina. You have to have the nvram no compat check for this option.

Comparisons for various Radeon cards in Heaven benchmark, all on Medium/2xAA/1920x1080 all on a vanilla Catalina install on the same machine.

the 5700 XT card draws around 220W during high load with instantaneous peeks up to around 260W. The reference board spec for the card is 225W so I’m quite happy running it on an un-modified 5,1.

I think what the benchmarks tell us is that the Navi drivers have a little way to go yet to see the cards full potential. I’m certainly already happy with the figures when taking into account the power draw of this card when compared to a Vega 64.

Im happy to run other benchmarks if you think they will help, but don’t want to muddy this thread as it’s off topic, so may create another thread for that.
