intel mini ram 2

bevo said:
doesnt need to be in pairs, you just better performance when used in pairs.

what pc maker would sell a system without any ram at all?

These systems are built to run out of the box....

My point about buying with no ram is that as it stands, you either pay apples prices, or go third-party and end up binning atleast 256 meg, not good.
I guess what i really want is a headless mac with more than 2 ram slots and decent performance, (a headless imac, mac?)

ok a few more questions then...

Since I intend to always keep a Windows box (unless a *real* and complete soultion is developed to run Windows XP/Vista on intel Macs at which point I will die and go to heaven and buy a huge iMac) I assume a KVM switch is in order. My LCD uses DVI so I assume I need a KVM switch with DVI... does that mean I am out $200 or are there other soultions, ie. cheaper ones? And what is a good switch to get... amazon.com reviews make most of them look like they barely work.
Do you have XP Home or Pro? If Pro, you can run your windows box headless and download Remote Desktop Client from Microsoft's website. Or if you have XP home an option is to try VNC (TightVNC or RealVNC for the server on the PC, Chicken of the VNC for the viewer on the Mac).

But RDC has better performance and is more configurable - VNC is intolerably slow for me (Windows -> Mac) even when the computers are sitting next to each other because you see exactly what's on your PC. You can configure RDC to cut out the eye candy. VNC Linux -> Mac is much faster.

However, in both cases you'll need to configure the PC server side as a service, and if anything goes wrong on the Windows machine (as if it ever would) you are going to have to swap over the keyboard, mouse and display.

Or just get a PC laptop.

heh no idea. FedEx just says "left origin". i think it's safe to say it won't be flying directly into NY from China so now it'll probably make its way across the US in a truck for 5 days now. i can't stand the suspense. looking at the back of my Quicksilver it says "Assembled in the USA". the good old days.

Is that the actual resolution your using?

How can you cope with it at that size :eek: (unless your using it via a tv for Frontrow)

haha...yes I am using it via tv, but that shot was taken while i was using an old LCD that I have, whose max res is 1024x768.

Edit: actually I didnt realize the resolution was even lower than 1024x768...I think I must have scaled the shot down, although I dont remember doing that..

My wife's new mini left China this morning.

At this point, I always regret not getting the faster shipping. But it is simply too expensive from Apple (and frivolous waste of money.)

So I expect it next Friday. Either though it is going to be used by my wife, I am can't wait to play with it and see how much faster it is.

Specs:
Core Duo
120mb HD
2gigs Memory

She complains about how slow her current mini is (rev.a with 512mb of memory.) I hope this new completely loaded mini simply screams...

I played around with a couple of minis in the nearest Apple store at lunchtime. There were two beside each other that seemed to have the same configuration (core duos, 512GB - I doublechecked that it wasn't showing the Solo/Duo typo) but one played the HD BBC motion trailer without stuttering and the other showed obvious frame dropping. Oddly enough, when I set it to full screen, the choppiness stopped. Each was using up to 130% CPU and was well below 512MB RAM usage.

However, the one that showed the dropped frames had a wireless ethernet connection and the other was wired, so I'm wondering if that's related (I wasn't downloading anything else and I closed down all other applications).

The good news for Java developers is that they compiled Java in line with the CPU speed, e.g. 10% slower than my 1.83GHz Intel iMac and 45% faster than my PC when it's running Windows.

MS Office seemed to open slowly, showing a beachball for a few seconds (didn't time it, but it felt like about 5 seconds, but people when waiting always overestimate time so I'm guessing it was more like 2-3 seconds).

Overall, I'm impressed if not overwhelmed (but I didn't expect to be). This will do my wife nicely as an office machine. I think I'll order the duo with 1GB RAM, $300 more than base, but I like to do a bit of future proofing. If this lasts like all our previous computers we'll still be using it in 4 or 5 years. And if we upgrade in the future it can go under the TV where it belongs.

Mini RAM Dimm or So-Dimm?

And now for ordering of RAM. A couple of places say it's a So-Dimm others a Dimm.

I thought it was fullsize just like the iMac.

Haven't got a chance to run 3d games yet. Doom 3 full game is Universal not the demo.

I.

Tell me what you want to see, I'll try to run it tonight.

I can corroborate the reports that 720p plays at 24fps no problem, but 1080 not so much. Front Row seems snappy too (I've never really used it on anything else though). I also noticed that it wakes from sleep waay quicker than my iBook or iMac, but maybe the G4 Minis were like this too.

Streaming video or audio from my iMac to Front Row works really well too. I just wish I had an HDTV cause it doesn't look that great on my low-D TV.

Cool..... I'm wondering how they perform with apps that run under rosetta emulation. And uhhm I dont know what 720p and 1080p are lol :eek:

Yeah there was a 1080 Snowboarding for N64, it was awesome. There was a sequel for Gamecube that wasn't as good, or so I have heard.

720p and 1080i are common Hi-Def resolutions. I don't know all of the details myself, other than to say p=progressive, i=interlaced, and 720p is not quite as nice as 1080i.

720p = 1280x720 progressive video
720i = 1280x720 interlaced video
1080p = 1920x1080 progressive video
1080i = 1920x1080 interlaced video

ha. good attitude. when the new car smell settles a little and you have some more time try to just run a clean launch of a game and nothing else and report the horror. i'm curious if that video card will actually go ahead and grab 224MB of your RAM if it's available. might not make it if you have the stock 512 though. and i believe Doom 3 is Universal. do File > Get Info on the app icon and it will tell you the architecture.

Excuse me, where did this fud about IIG grabbing 224mb of memory come from? Perhaps you might want to reread the MacWorld article. It is 80MB, not at least, no buts, MAXIMUM. 80MB MAX. Jeez.

here's some new benches comparing the new to the old. good numbers. and yes, yes we all know, ASIDE FROM THE 3D GRAPHICS. we're all very aware. good now that that's out of the way, the numbers look great in this test. just look at those thread results!

http://www.123macmini.com/news/story/451.html

This benchmark data is great! I am amazed at how well the new mini performed. I think this is a very telling article, at least for those who are interested in benchmarks. It clearly shows an advantage over the old mini. Very impressive, indeed. :D

Now we just need to compile all the new data from realworld testing (among those who have new minis) of encoding, video, etc...Seems from what I've heard so far that this baby is gonna do just fine!

Interesting piece on Appleinsider about the 10.4.6 update, the Intel version is expected to be 150MB compared to 58 for PPC :eek:

As expected, the Intel build also places an incredible emphasis on the continued development and refinement of Apple's Rosetta emulation environment, which allows most PowerPC-based Mac OS applications to run seamlessly on the company's new Intel-based systems.
