Well, I swapped that stock duo I bought Wednesday (unopened) for a 1GB/100GB duo today, and took the plunge and opened it up.

It is slower than the 17" Intellimac in some ways, but, generally, feels as snappy. I am confident - after playing with 512MB versions in the Store - that 1GB is a noticeable improvement over 512MB, whereas speed isn't likely to improve much or often with 2GB (plus, I'm just rationalizing my purchase of the 1GB model they had in stock. ;)).

All told, it is a lovely little thing, surprisingly fast and responsive.

All those waiting for delivery or thinking of buying: you will love this. Ignore the naysayers. It's a blast!

That's nice to hear, this will make it nicer for my gf to finally decide if this will be the way to go ;) I think she is still holding out for an Intel iBook  but as with the last round, the Minis were still a tad faster than the iBooks were. Not that she needs speed to make a class schedule but as a backup as well this would be nice.
Enjoy your new Mini...

iTunes encoding is abysmal on the CS model. Still, seems it will be a good model as a dedicated music server.

Ouch - Guess iTunes likes Duel Cores.

Although:

Thats not really something id do very often, why didnt they encode a CD track of a certain length into iTunes - Thats more real world.

Anyone with a Solo tried importing a CD into iTunes yet?

With regards to encoding for itunes and Quicktime, people seem to forget that both these applications are heavily optimized for Altivec. This is why the Intel Macs do not perform as well as one would expect since Apple may not have these apps as well optimized to use SSE yet. Most likely we will see more improvements in the coming months.

Good question. It would be nice to see a comparison between the Solo and Duo performance on importing a CD to iTunes. Also, has anyone done any messing around with HandBrake with either of the new minis? I'm curious to see how that goes...

best dvr solution for my new mini?

Well, I sprung for the duo, 2 gig, 120 gig hd (I was a little giddy and got carried away - I went for the ipod hifi too). It really was a no-brainer for me. I just finished converting my frontroom into an honest - to - gosh cherry-paneled library. It's very traditional except for the plasma hidden behind a painting. The surround speakers are hidden too. The compartment for the center channel was just the right size to add a mini. The job was finished the same day the mini was announced so, clearly, God intended me to include it. It hasn't shipped yet (I guess 'cause it's BTO).

Anyway, do you think el gato is the way to go for dvr capability? I've heard good things about them, but haven't used one myself.

Sounds like you've got a really awesome setup going there! :D Congrats on the mini and hifi. I too have heard many good things about the ElGato EYETV EZ and 200, but I'm not sure which one would work out best. I think the 200 is the one that can record to your mac. Check it out here... Good luck with you new system!

I've got a 200. Absolutely excellent. Though I'd recommend a diferent HD specifically for recordings. The ministack looks to be ideal for that.

What to do with stock RAM

Just upgraded my stock duo core Mac Mini from 512MB RAM to 2Gig RAM from Ramjet. It made a HUGE speed and performance difference on the Mini. HUGE!

What can be done with the two 256MB DDR2's I pulled out of the Mini?

air mouse?

Oh, you juuuust might want to use the Apple Wireless (BlueTooth) keyboard and a BT mouse - (I recommend Kensington's) for your in-wall setup.

yep, bluetooth fer sure. The only thing is that i really won't have much of a surface for a mouse (2 recliners are about 8 wks out). I remember something about an "air mouse." I think it was some sort of gyro thingy that would track your movements throught the air. It was marketed for doing presentations. Something along these lines might do the trick.

2 gigs of RAM

I just installed my 2 Gig of RAM from Other World Computing.

My first try at cracking the macmini. Everything went smooth.

I wonder what kind of boost I'll see.

Going to run xbench.

Arrived!

my mini finally got here today. Core Duo with a GB of RAM. installing my software etc now. feels really snappy in the OS. the iLife stuff performs really well. i installed Warcraft 3 and i am happy to say that it is quite playable with every video setting on maximum. not kidding. feels about the same as it did on my dual G5 with 64MB video. since i'm not a serious gamer maybe i don't have the eye to notice the difference but all the animation is smooth and nothing is acting strange or slowing down. i only played for about 10 minutes so i haven't seen a busy fight scene yet but so far, so good. i know it's not the most visually advanced game in the world but it's all i've got. maybe i'll install Myst Revelation later. very happy with this little mini. only bummer is i've already eaten up about 50GB of hard disk space and i haven't even done anything yet. that's just my music, photos and software. should have sprung for the 120GB. :)

Woo hoo! My Mini was delivered today.. 2 days earlier than what FedEx expected and 4 days earlier than what Apple expected. So much for accurate shipping times. I'm making the switch from by G4 PB back to a desktop. Got the Dual Core 100 Gig and 2GB Ram version, saw the 1GIG 1GB Ram in the store, but didn't want to deal with installing the ram in. I bought my Lacie Mini Drive a couple months back in preparation of the new mini.. now all I need is my 23 inch Apple HD monitor which is coming on Wednesday. So sad I got my mini early and all I can do is just look at it.

Congrats to everyone who received their Minis! I just picked up my Core Duo this evening, too! Thanks to users here on Mac Rumors, I found out that you can pick up "pre-upgraded" at the Apple store. No cruel shipping wait times for me. :p 1.66 ghz of goodness, 1 gig of RAM and a 100 gig HD. *drools*

Apple - hurry up and send everyone their Minis! :D

Congrats on your mini. I'm interested in knowing how much the "Upgraded" or "Ultimate" version of the mac mini you bought is going for at the Apple Store?

Thanks! I got mine for the same price as if you custom ordered it on Apple.com. It came up to be $949 + tax.
