i installed Warcraft 3 and i am happy to say that it is quite playable with every video setting on maximum. not kidding. feels about the same as it did on my dual G5 with 64MB video. since i'm not a serious gamer maybe i don't have the eye to notice the difference but all the animation is smooth and nothing is acting strange or slowing down. i only played for about 10 minutes so i haven't seen a busy fight scene yet but so far, so good. i know it's not the most visually advanced game in the world but it's all i've got.

Well that is good to know because I don't believe that I play any games that are anymore visually advanced than that. Now the only thing holding me back is adequate money:p

Passed my viva yesterday, got drunk and ordered an intel mac mini :D core duo, 1gb ram and 100 gb hard disk, otherwise as specced. won't arrive for a week probably. I'm pretty excited actually. Always wanted a mac mini, but there was not much between the performance of the PPC mini and my g4 ibook. This should be much better (for most of the things I do).

:'( Everyone's got their minis apart from me!!

I ordered mine 45 minutes after the UK store came back online. It took me 45 minutes to place the order though because the site was going so slow.

I ordered a CTO Mini Duo (1 Gig of RAM) and an HP Deskjet 5940 printer because of the £60 rebate you get. My Apple tracking page says that the mini's 'out for delivery' in Luxemburg for some reason. That was yesterday. The last line on http://www.apecode.com says 'departed direct' with an eta of the 7th march. Two lines below it says 'arrived at transit hub' in Luxemburg with an eta of the 14th march. The TNT tracking part doesn't work right now.

Why is it just sitting there in Luxemburg?!! The same thing happened when I ordered my iPod Mini actually, it sat in Luxemburg for days on end with nothing apparently happening. It took more time to cross the channel than it did to get from Hong Kong to Luxemburg. :(

I want my mini!!

I don't think it'll make you feel any better, Spanky, but mine is also hanging around in Luxembourg with the same shipping notes. *Paces back and forth*

I knew I shouldn't get my hopes up when it said ETA 7th March on the apecode tracker but I just couldn't help it.

To make matters worse Scan.co.uk sent me the wrong memory today, too. Argh.

Lol! Yeah, my heart did jump a bit last night when it said ETA 7th!! I don't quite understand why it takes so much longer for things to arrive to us in the UK than it does for the folks in the US!
Protoplasm, look at it on the bright side, at least you should have had time to sent that memory back and have the right stuff arrive before you get the mini!!

Have to concur with that - they've just rang to say I wasnt in for the delivery - which is strange as its a business address and there 10 of us sat here, dont suppose a van could sneak up on us down the only road to the office...

Rang the depot to see if I could meet the driver and pick it up from him, but he's now finished for the day and buggered off :(

Now, I write a lot of the back end IT stuff for another carrier company, and this is the kind of stuff they say when they never had the parcel in the first place :(

Now on a b410 service for the morning, if I'm lucky :(

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hope yours go's via a different carrier...

Pete.

I've got the shipping notice, so now I watch it slowly crawl across the globe. The order status says TNT. I've had mixed experiences with them, parcels have always arrived on time but my first nano arrived in a total state, box all mashed up and the screen smashed. I got a replacement but having to wait a few more days really annoyed me!

Oo, mine's with FLEX POSTAL & HUB UK for the bits and pieces, and KUEHNE & NAGEL for the mini, which is STILL in Hong Kong!

Anyway, I've also ordered the ACD 23" and some soundsticks to my order, for use with EyeTV as a complete media solution, so I'll post some pics this time next week when it all (supposedly) arrives!

been using mine for the past two days and i gotta say i am quite impressed so far. as i already mentioned Warcraft III is more than playable with all options set to highest on my 20" Cinema display, very pleased to see that. oddly though, Myst IV Revelation won't even launch. no error, no nothing. i loaded a GarageBand song with 16 software instruments and 16 audio tracks all with effects and the whole thing played with less than 50% load on both cores. that's unbelievable. haven't done anything with iMovie or iDVD yet. iPhoto absolutely flies on the this thing. haven't even bothered to install Photoshop on there, probably will just use my PowerBook for that for now. i'd say 95% of my apps are Universal at this point. just waiting for FileMaker and SoundTrack Pro. where i really see the speed from this machine is in it's number crunching. the slower 5400 RPM HDD is not best for working with huge audio or video files but the Core Duo is amazing at multithreading and calculating. running XBench with only CPU, Thread and Memory checked will show a good example. it performs those tests about 94% as fast as a dual 2 Ghz G5 and more than twice as fast as my 1.5 Ghz G4 PowerBook. the graphics and slower hard drive are what could potentially bring down the performance but if you use this thing outside of 3D gaming and heavy disk activity or with a fast Firewire drive i am convinced it will make quite a nice little workhorse. i will try to do some time tests with iTunes CD ripping soon.

Believe me, they played that trick on me too with my eMac, saying they tried to deliver but no ones at home, when in fact there was someone home

The status shown for mine in apecode has updated in the past hour or so and now says: "truck arrived at final destination"

Where the flippin' heck is the final destination, though, cos I thought I would be the final destination yet I am pretty sure I wouldn't forget taking delivery of it! :)

EDIT: I can only guess final destination is Flextronics in Daventry, where my keyboard and mouse have been lounging about for the past week, and that they'll head to me from there. Curse all this waiting.

Slight Concern about potential mac mini

Hi everyone. Glad to see most people getting on well with their new mini. I am thinking of getting a mini and using it as a home entertainment system. I dont have anything HD yet but I am concerned about future proofing so I am leaning on the side of the Duo at the moment. My concern is that this machine will be faster than my current primary computer (Dual 1.42GHz G4). I suppose the dilema is do I go for the Solo or Duo?

From my point of view I dont have any HD content and all my DVDs are in MPEG format. I dont want the Dual Layer SuperDrive, I am not bothered about the HD (I soppose if I get the Solo I will spend the difference on a new mini compatible HD, or extra RAM). The only advantage of the Duo is the processor and with the potential of upgrading I suppose this is smaller.

Can advice would be great, thanks.

Richard

I would have thought they were running low on food in the cockpit by now.

That's a simply wonderful quote!! I love it!!

My mini's apecode status is now arrived at final destination, its said that since yesterday. Does TNT Express not deliver Apple stuff anymore and whats this Flextronics in Daventry thing about? Does anyone know how to track our stuff with Flextronics?

Ooh, I just checked Apple's tracking and it says "Arrive Terminal DAVENTRY, NR, GB 09 Mar 2006 08:48". Maybe that means I'll get it tomorrow. I want it now though!! Apple should sense my need and do something about it. Hmmm.. Apple iNeed, the new pleasing service from Apple.

Lol! Yeah it sounds like it!! I just spoke to Apple and it definately won't be delivered today but it'll probably get here tomorrow. A courier has to pick it up from Daventry and then get it out to me here, she didn't know which courier would be used but there's a good chance it'll be TNT Express. I really hope it doesn't sit in Daventry for ages like it did in Luxemburg!!
