New Mac pro owner saying Hi

Just got a Macbook Pro 15" MC118LL/A last week and trying to learn a whole new world to me. I've been building my own PC's since the early 90's and started out with DOS 3.3 so it's a hard road to start down for me.

I've been trying to assemble a list of 'must have' apps to equip my Mac well so it will hopefully help me ease in a little better. I have Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and ilife 09 and iwork 09. I am going to boot camp it with windows 7 ultimate (I have a microsoft technet subscription) so I can see how it runs on the mac as well.

I picked up the Macbook sealed from ebay with the bing cashback for 1308 delivered from a trusted seller. Seeing that the same model is 1699 from Best Buy I think I got a really nice deal, however I do want to upgrade the hard disc as I have about 100gb of personal music so the 250 gb drive will disappear quickly when I add that and the boot camp windows 7.

I know the new macbooks are coming out soon, but with the 10% bing cashback and the price I paid for my first mac I'm ecstatic with it and maybe in a year or so I'll look at what is new.

Right now I just want to learn another platform. My wife was raised on macs so she just sometimes can be heard giggling at me when I talk to this mac saying things like 'oh come on now, where is it hidden?' 'where's THAT coming from?' 'why is that icon bouncing on the bottom?' I've leaned a lot of the basics since I got it last week but I'm still just a greenhorn to be honest.

Thanks for reading and I have a couple of questions but I'll post them in a few days.

Hello!

I joined to hear some discussion about the iPad before taking the plunge. I'm also getting a bit tired of the Apple Forum . . . feels too much like an emergency room.

New Mac User

Hello my name is Miles came across MacRumors this evening while messing around on my new laptop. Went to my friendly neighborhood Apple Store, purchased a new MacBook Pro the $1,499 model. Reason being I am finding the need for a laptop while in college and recently got an iPhone fell in love with it and Apple. Hoping this new laptop will be the same.

Just wanted to introduce myself, looks like a good forum to be a part of!

Thanks
Miles

I am sooo happy to have found macrumors!

I've been a long-time contributor to political forums, but for quite a while I've been tired of the all stupidity, rancor and name-calling. As a Buddhist, I'm trying to cultivate a more peaceful and kind mentality, and felt these forums sabotaged my efforts.

I kept searching for a site where people weren't just interested in venting and stumbled across macrumors. What a find! Not only are there discussions on politics, religion and current events, but also graphic and web design, (I'm a twenty-year professional) not to mention macs (20 years of devotion).

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Peace out y'all :D

New here...new to Macs

That's right folks, another new guy! You've won me over dang it! :)

So a quick history, I started on an Apple IIe a long time ago. Time goes by and of course I got sucked into the world of PCs. I've spent the last 10 years on Windows XP and then about 2 years ago I just started getting sick of Windows in general. Now I've been working on Ubuntu for the past 6 months, much better! I've always been an Ipod fan, have owned several different gens, including a few Ipod Touch. Only reason I haven't gotten an Iphone yet is because I haven't wanted to switch to Verizon (will be getting Iphone "HD" this summer, regardless).

So, my conversion story is simple. I was always a blind "hater", never really knowing why I didn't like Apple computers. A few weeks ago I went to Haiti for some missionary work (setting a new network from the ground up at a school). While I was there a friend was always using his Macbook Pro. I ended up using it a lot as well and asked lots of questions. By day two I was sold...I fell in love with how streamlined everything was. Programs ran with efficiency, not so many lock ups, an OS that just seemed to WORK! So that's my love story!

I haven't bought a Mac yet, but I've been on here for the last week reading a lot. I was actually stacked and ready to go out and by a MBP, but then I got a warning from a friend to hold off until the refresh. Wow was I ever glad...I'd been pissed if I had done that within days/weeks of new ones coming out. Sorry for the being long winded, just wanted to share...happy to be hear and a proud new "Apple guy". Thanks for an informational, wealth of information here.

I've already posted a few times on the forums, but I figured I'd just do a quick hello, before continuing.

Hello, everyone, I'm FoxMac. I joined here since I picked up a Snow iMac G3 a little while ago, and thought it would be appropriate to join this forum to find other awesome people with Macs.

I was a long-time reader of the Mac Rumors site but recently decided to join. I've had Apples on and off my whole life. My Dad was an avid Apple tinkerer in the 80's so that's how it all started for me. Good to be onboard! :D

Hello. I'm fairly new here (been here almost a week now) . I love the forum here because it's so active - if you post something people reply and look at it, which is great.

I have a MacBook 2009 white model, and an iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation. I'm looking to maybe getting an iPhone or iPod to replace the Shuffle and/or my old Nokia phone.

Wandered into the Garden

Hey everyone. I've been reading this site for a long time but just decided to join today. I've always been a PC/Windows/Microsoft kind of guy but the last few years they seem to have lost the plot. You can tell that they spend a huge amount of R&D dollars in the corporate space because we see new and interesting server platforms and business systems from them all the time but their consumer innovation has been nonexistent for some time now. I remember how the consumer computing world changed when we went from DOS to Windows. I remember the leap to Win 95 and then to 98 and XP in the consumer world. I remember the shift that came with the NT kernel and Win 2000 in the corporate world. Looking at the Apple consumer product suite at the time, it wasn't a good fit for me and never drew my interest.

Fast forward to the present. Win XP is end of life, Windows Vista was a cruel and shameful joke on the consumer, and Win 7 just strikes me as service pack 4 for XP. I make the statement from an innovation perspective for the consumer. Sure the kernel has changed, sure the security model is different, etc, etc. But what about the "WOW" factor for consumers. There was a time when we could look forward to the next big shift and embrace it. Looking at Ballmer's interview at D8, you can tell that when it comes to consumers, they don't know what people want anymore. They're grasping at straws and symptoms but they're not leading innovation anymore.

For that reason, I'm making the shift to Apple for my next computing device. I don't know what that is yet but I do know that for the last few years, all the WOW factor has come from Apple.

Hey guys, I started browsing here a little over a year ago when I switched over to Mac. I found this to be a great resource which helped to smooth the transition, so I thank everyone whose posts I read for that.

I decided to join now that I am totally confident with the operating system, and I hope to help out anybody who is in the position I was in last year.

Hello!

My name is Joe and I go by the persona of JVB when I am podcasting.

I have always enjoyed Apple products because of the quality of its craftmanship. My first Apple-based purchase was an iPod Touch for my wife on Mothers Day, 2 years ago. Now, after 3 iPhones, I have my 16 gig iPad and I love it.

I have been a reader of Mac Forums for many years and I thank everyone for their informative conversations that helped me solve problems I've had with my Apple products in the past, and future. :)

Hi there. A new Board member

Hi. I’ll do a short introduction.

I’m from a small town in Scotland called Troon (Famous for hosting the Golf Open Championship). I actually live in Thailand 90% of the time.

My switch to Apple happened last oct when i bought an Iphone 3Gs, i actually expected it to be difficult to use. I was wrong.

I had a compaq Laptop (the first PC of any sort that i personally bought) for 4 years and can’t say i had that many problems with it.

I wanted a new laptop for about a year but couldn’t really justify buying one because i didn’t really need one because my uses for a laptop are very simple. I brows about online. Download music, upload pictures and videos, send Emails and use Office for work.

Then last November my 15 year old step daughter asked if she could get a cheap laptop. With in 5 minutes i had my old laptop in my bag, i drove to my friends who is a wizz kid with computers, gave him the laptop and told him to scrub everything on it and put windows 7 on it along with new Thai keys and language in the laptop.

Drove into town to the Apple store which took about another 10 minutes, and roughly 15 minutes later had a 15” MacBook pro with 250Gb HD amd snow leopard installed and I also bought Windows Office for it as i am used to using it.

I got home, opened it, and i think the easiest explanation i can give as to how my experience of changing to Mac was................ it worked and it was easy.

Personally i think the whole Mac v PC thing is a bit childish at times and i don’t mean to offend anyone with that ladies and gents. And until i bought a MAC i knew very little about them, and like most of you will have said, i am never going back to PC, everything just works!!

I am a DJ and will be using my MBP to DJ soon once i install Traktor, you can see my set up in my Avatar :)

I can’t say i will add anything to this board, it will be a case of me asking questions now and again as i am not too clued up about computers, although i wish i was as i find them fascinating.

There’s a wee intro from your newest joiner ladies and gents.
