I'm curious. Who can read a real book in the dark with no booklight or other source of light? As for the ipad, reading one in bed at night the backlight of the screen will be just as annoying as a booklight would be to your partner.

No it wouldn't, the dark mode is not any more brighter than the clock alarm next to you. Black background with white text? That's how I read on my bed with my iPhone.

The kindle wasn't worth a damn when it came out. There is no competition in this category and Apple knows it. That is why it is not a tablet PC and has no camera etc. because the category is empty right now. Everyone will rush to make something better once they see the iPad is a success.

My Archos 9 tablet ...

Is a complete and utter piece of crap.....

The single reason why that tablet, and every other major tablet to date has been a complete failure is because they run windows. Windows was not designed to be used with your finger.

And I just gotta say IDK how you type with that crappy on screen keyboard on your archos with its bad touch screen.

heres a good alternative to the ipad

I disagree 100% with those saying not to compare iPad to Kindle .

1st off, within the industry, the creators of these devices are absolutely comparing their products to each other.

  • They are competing devices for shared target markets
  • the same can be said about creators of mobile gaming devices (nintendo, psp)
  • the same can be said about PDA's (are these even existant anymore post-iphone?)
  • the same can be said about the digital camera industry
  • the same can be said about the stop watch industry
  • the same can be said about the wrist watch industry
  • the same can be said about the voice recorder device industry
...the list goes on.. i could fill a page ...

Is it true that these industries are going to disapear? no . their survival will always be determined by how effective they can do 1 thing better than an all in one device , ala iPhone. In many cases this is true now.

It is true however that any individual (and there are millions) that currently owns an iPhone is less likely to purchase a watch, a digital camera, a voice recorder, a psp etc.

In this case I'm willing to assume that a person who owns an iPad is going to be less likely to purchase a kindle . So yes by all means compare the two.

Hey, thanks for that pearl of good cheer, tidings, and 3rd party regurgitation! :D

Since you asked, the 9 has a USB port. When I don't care for the on-screen keyboard (which is exactly as wide and functional as the iPad's will be) I plug a full sized keyboard into it. ;) I suspect some will be connecting a real keyboard to the iPad too. It'll work great. :)

Bingo! Give that man a cigar.

So you're saying the resistive touch screen keyboard on your Archos 9 is as responsive as the capacitive touch screen technology that Apple has adopted? Reviews don't seem to support you on this one chief.

Yes. I touch a key, it responds. I can touch it with my finger, a stylus, my fingernail, my elbow, etc.. It still responds. Show me that when your iPad comes in. I can also re-scale it and place it anywhere on the screen. So you'll know: since coming out there have been updates for the touchscreen drivers, the graphic drivers, bios, audio, webcam, and Wifi/Bluetooth as well. Go ahead and trust those reviewers who played with one for 5 minutes and never updated anything or optimized it. Always use someone else's opinion instead of informing yourself. Great life strategy. Should get you far. I'm kind of curious why you seem so threatened by the 9. Or is it just me you feel the need to attack?

It's just that you seem to demonstrate a desperate need to justify your purchase of the Archos 9 by claiming all sorts of superior features, design, and performance relative to the iPad. But every review I've seen whether by a professional or actual users has crapped all over the thing. They especially crapped on the resistive touchscreen for its responsiveness, its appearance, and its weird resolution specs. Meanwhile, it has no content delivery platform, no content providers, no app store, and very few people developing anything useful for it. So yes, I think I'll take a hint from the hundreds of people who are crapping on it and it's weak support base. Something you apparently failed to think of before plunking down your money. Enjoy your Archos. The rest of the world will enjoy.....well, something else I'm sure.

I love the quote from this review.....
"If I were Microsoft, I would politely ask Archos not to sell the Archos 9. This tablet doesn’t just make its creator look bad, it makes Windows 7 look like it doesn’t belong on touch-enabled PCs. "

The overall experience just seemed to be miserable, slow, poor touch software, etc. You can bet that Apple has thought out the overall user experience and the iPad will be responsive while being almost totally operable by touch gestures. That's why it has a custom OS and a limited set of H/W features. And yes, that's why flash got kicked off the island.

buying a archos product made me love apple even more. Apple just knows how to give us things that work and that are simple.

No. This thread is about ipad competitors. The OP started with the Kindle. I added a more realistic one I have real life experience with for comparison sake. I've simply stated facts about mine, including that I've updated it and that it's still not an identical device to the ipad, as there are hardware differences. You doubt me, although I have my 9 next to me and running, even though you personally haven't used one.

It uses the same screen most netbooks use: native 1024 x 600. It has a setting to run at a virtual 1024 x 768, same as most netbooks do, simply because some apps don't fit in 600 vertical pixels. I tend to keep mine at 1024 x 600. You need a content provider? Install iTunes or the Zune Client. Both free to download, and you don't need an iPad/iPod or Zune to use them. Did you get that it runs a full blown OS? That means it could be the host for and source for your iPad content. I don't disagree or agree with all those reviews you've read. I bought one to find out for myself. Having one to play with brings forth it's real shortcomings, the practical consequences of them, and shines light on the accuracy of those reviews. I also follow through after purchase to see how a device improves with updates. How many of those reviewers posted a follow up? For what it's worth, the iPod Touch was a waste of money when it first came out. I predicted it would get the iPhone apps and Bluetooth eventually. I also predicted what the iPad would be. I suggest you trust my opinion.

This is completely untrue. I am reading The Lunatic Cafe right now and I am at location 2324-28 which is 39% of the book.

I read just fine in my bed at night with a book light. And when I dont want to read with a light, I can turn if off. Can you turn off your backlit display and still read? Can you read in bright sunlight?

You are just too whiny.

I didn't realize someone's opinion was wrong? Maybe the books the op purchased didn't have what you mentioned. Table of contents, page indicator etc.

I am curious if the ipad will have a dimmer on it like what is on the iphone now.

Sorry 4D but I'm going to have to call you on this one. As one of the few (only) other A9 owners on this forum, I have to say if the iPad's keyboard has the same responsiveness as the A9's I will throw mine out the window. I've tried multiple drivers and multiple on-screen keyboard products on the A9 and have yet to find a combination that responded as well as the keyboard on the iPhone. There's some cool stuff I love like customization of keys (size and position) in some of the nicer software keyboard products (which you'll have to pay $20-30 for), but this doesn't help the overall touch response. In fact I was finally so frustrated with the A9 on-screen keyboard I bought a bluetooth keyboard for it. And then after that I installed the Air Mouse app as well - I actually had an easier time typing using the iPhone keyboard.

I know you are a big fan of your A9, and personally I would have loved it to be the Windows 7 equivalent of the iPad, but the truth is it just isn't up to snuff from either a hardware or software standpoint. I've spent countless hours upgrading it (even installed a SSD) and coddling it's every whim (USB port is nice except when it shuts down your unit when plugging in a USB drive grrr) - but I think you're in denial if you truly believe the end user experience of the A9 is going to compare favorably to the iPad's. Luckily in 2 weeks this won't be a debate, we can all experience the reality for ourselves.

Sorry 4D but I'm going to have to call you on this one.
Finally, someone who is not a 4D troll. Thanks for your post. I haven't seen the iPad. No comment about how well it will or won't work. My 9 is handy for me, although it took replacing the HD with an SSD, updating all the drivers, and optimizing the icons and taskbar placement for easier interaction. I also updated to Win7 Home Premium to get better touchscreen features. The Windows 7 touchscreen keyboard responds fine for me, and I also prefer a bluetooth or USB keyboard when I'm not surfing on the sofa. The trolls somehow get threatened when you bring up an alternative to the ipad, so watch out. That's all it is though. With no opinion about which is better. As you say, we'll all know in a couple of weeks. For me the 9 is a fit for my needs. Quite fun after the updating is done. It won't win any awards, but it still gets on the web and runs the apps I need it to.

Keeping Flash out of their ecosystem is more than just resource/power consumpsion. there are other reasons apple did not tell.

With Flash, you can create apps that you get access to directly from the browser, bypassing apple app store. apple wants total control of their ecosystem by removing this loophole.

There are other reasons that we might not know. It is all about control that channels sheep, consumers like us, into their money-making system.

So you bought this thing and had to replace the hard drive, the OS, all the drivers, and tweak the interface to make it usable. And you somehow find this not only acceptable but desirable? Perhaps I have higher expectations than you however if I need to do any of that crap to my iPad it's going right back to Apple. But somehow, I think the chances of that are extremely remote knowing the obsessive attention Steve Jobs gives to any new Apple product and the length of time Apple has spent looking at / creating this market. I expect a seamless experience from a responsive device with great content and apps.
