I have a 2G running 2.2.0 unlocked and not jail broken. Can I upgrade to 3.0 usingiTunes 8.2 without losing my unlock and without downloading 2.2.1 ?
Or do you really have to change to 2.2.1 ?
Cheers Chris

Add me to the list of people who have successfully unlocked a 2g iPhone. I went from a Pwnage Tool jailbroken unit (2.2.1) and upgraded to 3.0 today. No troubles except that I've lost Cydia, Installer, and any of the apps downloaded through them.

I updated directly through iTunes (8.2). The update is about 230MB, but downloaded fairly quickly. I must have caught the server at a good time.

Edit: had some time to play around this morning, and just realized that I'm one of the folks who lost YouTube connectivity. Oh well, I never use it anyway, so no real loss...

add me as another user that successfully updated and remained unlocked. I was on 2.0 and am now fully running 3.0 on T Mobile USA. My only complaint is that we don't get MMS boo, hopefully I can get a 3G off ebay soon so I can take advantage of that.

Have any of you read this yet ? :How to Update Your 2G iPhone to 3.0 Without Losing Activation, Unlock

I'd like to know about the official carrier thing, official carrier in UK is o2, I'm with Orange yet they are an official carrier in France. Any ideas?

I lost my carrier activation when I did a restore (I had QuickPwn'd to 2.2.1) and locked me out from my phone, what I did fix it the problem was to run Pwnage 2.2.5 and make a custom .IPSW of 2.2.1 and restore that with Pwnage (it wouldn't let me use my backup but I set it up as a new phone and upgraded to 3.0 then restored from backup).

Hi Guys.

I've updated from iPhone (2G) OS2 unlocked by pwnage tool to version 3 with no problems. Simply click update in iTunes and off you go :)

Apparently if you used quickpwn before to unlock your 2G iPhone, updating to 3 will lock it.

I had an unlocked 2G using Windows QuickPwn and just did an "update" via iTunes and my 2G lost it's activation :( I was just using it as a temp phone until my 3G S came (it was my unactivated dev test phone). Guess I'll have to wait for an official jailbreak or go back to 2.2.1 until Friday (unless the phone magically comes tomorrow).

I did this following the steps someone posted (make sure was unlocked using pwnage, upgrade not restore ect) and it is stuck on emergency calls only. It is unlocked because i have the orange carrier name and full signal. Urgh this is stressing me out. What do i do? Every other update i have done since 1.1.4 unlocked has been fine.

I am on a 2g btw.

Thanks

I dont get the "make sure you used pwnage instead of quickpwn" comments. What i always saw was you make a folder called pwnage and stick quickpwn in it along with the unlock bin folders to unlock and jailbreak so really, your using quickpwn to unlock , not pwnage.

If there is something else that somebody did with an actual unlock called pwnage, id like to know about it.

EDIT*..I get it now, pwnage is the MAC way to unlock and jailbreak your phones. I used Windows. Im not taking any chances, ill wait for the dev team to come out with their tools to make this as smooth as possible so i dont lose anything without being able to re unlock or jailbreak.

It would be nice to get YouTube working again. I'm not too upset as I'm getting an Android handset this fall.

Confirming (per the iClarified claim...) mine, unlocked via Pwnage Tool, not jailbreaked, updated with the official 3.0 release via iTunes in Windows (just clicked okay when it asked me if I wanted to update) works (automatically activated and appears functional), modulo the following issues, of which I am aware:

- Like others above, Youtube does not work. It seems this happened in some circumstances with 2.0 as well (not to me, though). Perhaps it will mean either a different activation process in Pwnage Tool or else it might mean some kind of fix via a jailbreak tool....

- I'm not sure this is related to it being unlocked, but I had four homemade .m4r ringtones before the update. After the update, none of them work -- they show up in the list but don't make sound. I verified the files on the PC were fine, and manually unchecked them, synced, then re-checked them to force new copies onto the iPhone, and they still didn't work. (A sample of iPod songs seems fine -- no issues there). I made some new ringtones using the same .m4r process, as far as I could tell, not doing anything different (although the old ones may have been made with Sound Studio on a Mac; these were made with Audacity on Windows), and they work fine. Then made small adjustments to the existing ringtones, saved them as new .m4r files, deleted the old copies in iTunes, put the new copies in iTunes, and synced them, and these also work fine. So I have working ringtones again, but what on earth was wrong with the old ones?

Otherwise I'm a-okay...

EDIT: I just realized my APN settings got blanked during the update before. Odd, that hasn't happened with a previous update. Once I restored the APN, though, EDGE data worked fine.

EDIT: One more thing I had not initially noticed was wrong: a couple more of my settings mysteriously changed, with everything else being set to normal. I wasn't getting any new mail, and then I realized that my phone had been set to Fetch->Manual, whereas it had been at Fetch->15 minutes. So far, I think this and the APN settings are the only ones that changed.

I had the same experience. Except I used QuickPwn originally with my device.

I upgraded to 3.0 and I have it working. But does locate me work for everybody on maps? Mine says it is unable to find my location..

Add me to those who couldnt upgrade my 2G with this method. But that may be coz I am not 100% sure sure if it was originally unlocked by quickpwn or pwnage. Guess I`ll be waiting till friday to get it unlocked again:eek:

I just realized one more thing in addition to the two I posted above -- when I restored, somehow my APN settings were blanked, even though it looked like all other settings were preserved. I just realized this morning when I got rejected on data services. Entering the APN back in fixed everything, however.

Did you use internet2.voicestream.com? I changed the APN, this made the data work but not the location service.

All you need to do is downgrade your itunes, use pwnage to restore to 2.2, then upgrade itunes 8.2 and UPDATE again to 3.0.

You'll then have an unlocked and activated 3.0 2G iphone.

Or...just wait until pwnage is compatible with itunes 8.2 and the 3.o OS...but waiting is not as fun.

I successfully updated to 3.0 while retaining my unlock (not jailbroken of course), youtube doesn't, and it seems my t-zones hack is broken for the time being.

Which location service? If you mean the old one, that Google Maps and Urbanspoon and so on use to find your location based on stuff like wifi hotspots and cell towers, it works for me (the graphics are different now!).

If you mean any of the MobileMe-dependent features, I don't have MM and so can't test them. :(

I meant the Google Maps! I dont seem to get it to work.. I tried the network reset.. still no luck.. so I was asking for your APN settings.. Thanks

Ahhh, I see. I actually hadn't tried location since I upgraded, so thank you for making me try it. Now let's see about getting yours working. :p

So now you made sure Loc Services is on in Settings, right? My APN right now is internet2.voicestream.com ... usual no username/pw. No data roaming.

Did you change the data APN from internet2 to something else, or from something else to internet2? Did you try the other ones, like wap.voicestream.com? This is a full list, I think:

Code:
Service Access Point Name (APN)
T-MobileWeb wap.voicestream.com
T-Mobile Internet internet2.voicestream.com
*NEW* T-Mobile Internet epc.tmobile.com
T-Mobile Internet with VPN internet3.voicestream.com
T-Mobile BlackBerry wap.voicestream.com
T-Mobile SideKick hiptop.t-mobile.com

Source: http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/T-Mobile_APNs

I don't think you should expect the Hiptop one to work, but try all the others... I used the wap one for quite a bit of time with my iPhone, and I found the speed to be essentially the same as internet2.

My Loc service is On and my APN was always set to internet2.voicestream.com. I also tried various other APN settings but still Google Maps is not able to locate me..

Do you think if I do a restore now, I would be fine? I believe it would deactivate me right? Maybe i just have to wait for the dev-team i guess.

I don't think restore deactivates you unless you're coming up from a QuickPwn 2.x... If you used some trick to avoid losing activation with previous use of QuickPwn, then what you're supposed to do is either wait for Pwnage Tool and use it to unlock 3.0, or else get the existing Pwnage Tool, use it to unlock 2.x, and then install that unlocked 2.x on your iPhone, and then upgrade to 3.0 again. :(

Also the Dev Team responded to issues:

Update 2 (Thursday morning):

* We have two issues that we’ve been trying to resolve:

1. There are new 3.0 complications with YouTube.app if you’re on a hacktivated (unofficially activated) device
2. There’s a bug in Apple’s new version of asr that our custom IPSW’s are tickling and causing crashes on, on some devices. (For the nerdy or curious among us, the details of that bug were tweeted by planetbeing a month ago.)

* As of Thursday morning we now have a workaround for #2. For #1, we’ll try our best to get it fixed but we may end up releasing a preliminary jailbreak in which YouTube doesn’t work for hacktivated devices, and then follow that up with a more complete jailbreak when we can.

So it looks like at some point, they intend to be the ones to deliver a fix for the Youtube issue. :)
