Sticking with my 2010 vintage 30" ACD. It's still works perfectly well and I like matte. My only minor complaint is the lack of modern ports...old USB and FW ain't going to cut it too many more years. Related to that, it would be nice if those USB ports had enough power to charge my iPad.

My nMP arrived last week and migrating data was absolutely nightmarish but the bottom line was that for migration purposes I needed a second monitor so I ran out and got a 27" TB Display. I have to say after having used it for several days, I really dislike it. Despite the fact that it's the same resolution, I have to say that the real-estate size difference was immediately apparent. I like the fact that the TB display has more modern ports and a built-in camera but that's about it. If my 30" ACD crapped out today, knowing what I know now, I would seek a non-Apple branded display.

Waiting for mine to arrive before I decide on a display. Third-party options look great but I'd much prefer an Apple display with built-in cam/mic.

I'm not so sure the built-in cam and mic are are really that good a deal. I went from a 30" ACD with old iSight camera to a 27" Thunderbolt display at work (with the built in camera). I find the built-in camera to be a lot less useful because you don't really have any control when it comes to point and zoom. It ends up framing me low in the image because the monitor is on a stand and there's no way to adjust the image without tilting the whole monitor awkwardly. It's a fine tradeoff for portables, and probably less of an issue for smaller display sizes, but with a gigantic display it's not really a great solution. It's sort of like if you had to open your car door a few inches to adjust the side mirror. :)

two 27 cinema displays, sony 1080p television, and whatever new monitor apple makes this year..i hope its not $3299 like the 30 inch initially was...i wont pay more than $1499 for the new apple monitor.

I'm leaning towards the NEC PA272W over the Asus PA279Q. A few people mentioned they are using the NEC. How are your experiences? Did you do the sRGB hack to get 10 bit color? Did you hook it up with mini display port or HDMI?

I own a PA272W and love it. The NEC multi-profiler tool is great. Quick and easy to change between color profiles and update the monitor settings. I especially like being able to set the brightness to a specific brightness level.

I connected it to the mac mini I'm currently running (nMP on order) using the included mini display port to display port cable and it works fine.

It's not the same resolution... the 30" is 1600 pixels high, and the 27" is 1440. It's a big difference. Heck, I'd take the 30" on aesthetics, too, not just resolution. Not a fan of the glossiness.

Agreed, I bought a loaded iMac with 2 TBDs to try vs my 4x30" setup...packed it up the next day. Couldn't stand it. Huge difference. The glare was awful, however I could have lived with the iMac glare, much less. I'm excited to receive my nMP to go with my 30s. :)

I guess you're right! 11% taller is so much better. Some days I kick myself for not picking up a second 30" ACD when they axed them a few years back. :(

so basically one has to hack Mavericks to make it work decently with a dell screen (u2713h)?

Since I am replacing my 2011 iMac with the nMP due to arrive tomorrow, I think I will move my 30" cinema display back to my main monitor and get a 1080p television to replace it on the wall, though I may very well find a nice monitor and put it on an arm - something I always wanted to do, but the iMac and even the 30" display were too heavy for most arms. I too prefer the 2560x1600 aspect. Only thing I don't like is just how hot the 30" display runs. I now have two 27" iMacs that will be free, maybe I'll bring my TB display home from the office and use the iMac at the office where it can also act as a target display for the rMBP.

Actually have a lot of options available. :)

I'm looking to sell mine, if you're interested. Still in great condition! ;)

That has nothing to do with 10 bit color.

I don't think these hacks have anything to do with 10 bit. I think they just let you choose the RGB color space in your monitors settings. At least that's what it did for me when I ran the script.

As far as 10 bit color goes, I think we're still waiting on Apple for that one.

Is this correct ?

You would need low level driver support and full displayport 1.2 compliance. Mini displayport didn't support every feature of displayport 1.2. The original thunderbolt didn't support it. Thunderbolt 2 in theory could support it, but someone would have to write low level drivers, and it wouldn't be complete without third party developers writing support where appropriate into their applications.

ASUS PA279q—uh oh.

One annoying flaw in the design of the ASUS PA279q—the "overdrive, overshoot, anti blur" or whatever you prefer to call it, is leaving colored ghosting behind some moving objects, including scrolling text. It's going back and I plan to upgrade to the Viewsonic VP2772. The Viewsonic has no card reader, a clunky looking stand, no uniformity compensation, but at least it has 3-levels of overshoot adjustment and only about $100 more.
If I could handle $500 more I'd definitely try the NEC PA272w with it's smooth, non-PWM backlight.
Baffling that ASUS could make a nearly perfect display and blow it by not putting in a parameter for tweaking overdrive. Still, if you do photography and the occasional pink or green ghosting of moving graphics doesn't bother you...

Example:

Pink and green artifacts appear out of nowhere when even black or grey elements are in motion at quicker speeds.

My dual-23" Dell Ultrasharp workhorses. My Mac Pro is a computational tool - there are only so many text editors, terminal windows and figure displays I need to have up.

Stepped up to the Viewsonic PA272w

I sent back the Asus PA279q and got the Viewsonic PA272w. I gave up the nicer controls, card reader, and better stand, but the important improvement of no tinted "overdrive" artifacts is worth the change as far as I can tell in the first minutes of use.
I should add that there is no obvious shift in color off-axis in the PA272w. Very impressive.
