As of today, the MacRumors Members Photo Directory is fully back in business under the new version of the forum software. All photo links have been rebuilt and tested. As of today, there are 154 forum members represented and 250 photo links.

The Directory has two new features:

1. Where members have posted a photo in their member profile, there is a link to that photo, labeled "profile photo". It will always be first in that member's list of photos.

2. Photos taken when the member was much younger (a baby or a child) are now labeled "baby photo".

There are a number of self-portraits in the Photography threads, some of which were in the previous Photo Directory, but it would take, let's see, 3.14159 years for me to go through all those posts again looking for them. So I won't add photos from the Photography threads except where a member alerts me about a particular post.

OMG ! I won ! Nobody told me !

I don't know what to say, I...gasp...this is such an emotional moment...can I use that image as my avatar when I reach 500 posts in two years time ?

... and you did :)

By the way, Doctor Q, very quick updating, my photo had been up for just a few minutes before it appeared here :)

Once I had a photo in here BEFORE it was posted in the Pics! thread. Wanna guess how I did it? Clue: It did not involve time travel.

The answer: While asking me a question, a member told me they were posting to the Pics! thread with a photo at a particular URL. I added it to the Photo Directory and I happened to click Submit before they did. If it had been a photo attached to their post, instead of at an external URL, I would have had to wait.

And now a question for everyone. In the Photo Directory, which would you prefer as the way recently-added photos are marked?

Choice 1 - the word "NEW" (the current method)
Choice 2 - a smilie
Choice 3 - bigger text
Choice 4 - a suitable color (which I'll pick after enormous amounts of color-perception and psychology research)

I'm thinking of switching from Choice 1 to Choice 2.

Examples:
1. Membername: NEW photo
2. Membername: :) photo
3. Membername: photo
4. Membername: photo

Missing photos

A bug in the site software has caused nine photos, belonging to eight MacRumors members, to be lost from their original posts. This causes the links in the Photo Directory to fail also. We do not know what causes this problem in vBulletin or its database. The problem happened once before, last year, so the upgrade to a new version of vBulletin did not fix the problem as we had hoped it would.

The problem is not particular to the MacRumors pics! thread, but missing attachments in that thread are the ones most likely to be noticed, as people use the Photo Directory to look at those photos.

The affected members did nothing wrong; they are just victims of a bug that seems to affect a few attachments at random. The original posts in the MacRumors pics! thread remain, but their attachments are no longer present. I have alerted the affected members and asked them to re-attach their photos or post new ones. In the meantime, the Photo Directory has the word "missing" in front of the affected links.

Another milestone

We have passed 200 members in the Photo Directory as we approach its first birthday, in 2 weeks. We currently have 357 photo links, so by then there should be enough to let you enjoy one photo for each day of the year!

We hit 400!

As of today, there are 400 photo links in the Directory, representing 232 forum members.

It is approaching 14,000 views, so people must think MacRumors members are pleasant to look at, or else they are so horrified that they can't look away!

I think it is a telling display of the maturity of our members that it has come this far without any screwing with photoshops. I'm proud of us here.

Could we put M or F beside the names so I know not to click on names with M beside it? Not too interested in looking at other guys, tyvm.

For the record, we've decided not to.

Year-end report

The directory ended 2004 with 234 members and 404 photo links.

The number of members participating increased by 94 over the course of the year.

And, despite the growth in the first three posts in this thread, we haven't yet hit the post size limit. Whew!

Mr. Bill says "ohhhhhh nooooooooo"

ibookin! übergeek! Look what happened!

Apple (or akamai.net) has taken down our photo from apple.com! :(

The photo with the three of us in line for the release of Panther is gone:

All that's left is a dull press release.

Maybe they are clearing off disk space to get ready for Tiger's release, and they could no longer afford the disk space for that jpeg, but what a sad state they have left behind. There must be a million broken links to this photo on the Internet now!

Luckily, we still have a copy:
