At 16:9, I feel 27" is too small. I def like the 16:10 30" better. Just wish it had higher pixel density like the iMac 27"
27" will be useful (and not an impulse) in this two cases :
- if you watch movies on your mac (new 16/9 format)
- if you work with tons of windows (ie developer)
In this two cases, I big is never enough... But I agree, I still like working on a 13" MB for simple tasks. I feel like more focused...
The bottom line is it really depends on how far you'd be sitting from the screen. How my desk is designed I only sit about 1.5 - 2 feet from my screen so it'd be kind of ridiculous to have a 27" screen where I'd have to move my entire head to view both ends. It'd be like having a 55" plasma TV and sitting only 5 feet away.
27 is nice size, but I want a refresh of the 30 ACD. I'm going to purchase the 27 iMac and use it just as a monitor till they come out with a update to the 30 ACD. Then once they do I will purchase that and us the 27 iMac as an actual computer.
Why not use it as both a monitor and computer now? How can you leave that beautiful machine unused?
I'm going to be hooking it up to my Mac Pro with an additonal 2 24 ACD.
It would be nice if I could leave the iMac on Windows 7 via bootcamp and switch back and forth between using it as a monitor and then switching to just the 27in iMac bootcamp instead of having to restart my mac pro.
You know the entire computer needs to be running to use it as a display? Personally, I feel that's a poor design choice. Just in case you didn't know though.
I know, but I need a iMac anyway and I have needed a third monitor for a while so I will use this until apple comes out with their new 30 ACD, or a 27 ACD. Then once I purchase a new monitor when they are released I can use the iMac as an actual iMac.
Oh yea, I understand needing a display. I mean the iMac is about the same price as the 30"ACD! Haha.
I was referring to wasting power while running a whole computer for the display.
Also, may I ask what you use so much screen space for? That's a lot!![]()
I'm a web developer and I plan on using the 27in as the main screen with 2 24acd on each side. The main is for using Coda/photoshop while the 24in to the right is for having a web browser open to view the sites / look things up. The left screen is used for skype, itunes and project management.
Cool setup! Basically the same thing I do, but with spaces. If what I did was something I get paid for I'd probably go the same route as you.![]()
I never really used spaces, I know what it does but really haven't tried using it although I should give it a shot as it may help alot. My problem is I always have so many things open and never enough room for them on my screens.
I cannot live without spaces, it is so much a part of my everyday computing style now
Definitely a part of mine. I have CompizFusion on Ubuntu on my desktop set up the same way. The one OS that's still way behind is Windows. I would have thought they'd add it to 7. Not like it's new or anything.
I find myself trying to activate spaces on all my computers now. It is the ultimate desktop management tool. But for development, I still like a larger screen for multiple windows of the same task.
ViViD, I didnt realize Ubuntu had a spaces like program. Im running Ubuntu on my PS3 to play around with Linux.
Oh yea. You can use Picker for basic functionality. I use Compiz Fusion (looks, dare I say it, even nicer than mac!) but it requires hardware graphics acceleration, which PS3 Linux doesn't get.

Have you actually used it? "Move your entire head" that is ludicrous![]()

How in the heck do you run two monitors off of the iMac? I thought it supported only one?
