27" will be useful (and not an impulse) in this two cases :
- if you watch movies on your mac (new 16/9 format)
- if you work with tons of windows (ie developer)

In this two cases, I big is never enough... But I agree, I still like working on a 13" MB for simple tasks. I feel like more focused...

Um, video editing? Organizing photos? Writing an essay with multiple windows for outline, quotes, etc. There are many, many, many uses.

The bottom line is it really depends on how far you'd be sitting from the screen. How my desk is designed I only sit about 1.5 - 2 feet from my screen so it'd be kind of ridiculous to have a 27" screen where I'd have to move my entire head to view both ends. It'd be like having a 55" plasma TV and sitting only 5 feet away.

Have you actually used it? "Move your entire head" that is ludicrous :p

I use a 37" hdtv for my monitor with wireless mouse/keyboard and I love it. I think the 27" imac is meant to be used like a tv

I am also only about 4 feet from the tv and my eyesight is really bad

27 is nice size, but I want a refresh of the 30 ACD. I'm going to purchase the 27 iMac and use it just as a monitor till they come out with a update to the 30 ACD. Then once they do I will purchase that and us the 27 iMac as an actual computer.

Why not use it as both a monitor and computer now? How can you leave that beautiful machine unused?

I'm going to be hooking it up to my Mac Pro with an additonal 2 24 ACD.

It would be nice if I could leave the iMac on Windows 7 via bootcamp and switch back and forth between using it as a monitor and then switching to just the 27in iMac bootcamp instead of having to restart my mac pro.

You know the entire computer needs to be running to use it as a display? Personally, I feel that's a poor design choice. Just in case you didn't know though.

I know, but I need a iMac anyway and I have needed a third monitor for a while so I will use this until apple comes out with their new 30 ACD, or a 27 ACD. Then once I purchase a new monitor when they are released I can use the iMac as an actual iMac.

Oh yea, I understand needing a display. I mean the iMac is about the same price as the 30"ACD! Haha.

I was referring to wasting power while running a whole computer for the display.

Also, may I ask what you use so much screen space for? That's a lot! :)

I'm a web developer and I plan on using the 27in as the main screen with 2 24acd on each side. The main is for using Coda/photoshop while the 24in to the right is for having a web browser open to view the sites / look things up. The left screen is used for skype, itunes and project management.

Cool setup! Basically the same thing I do, but with spaces. If what I did was something I get paid for I'd probably go the same route as you. :D

I never really used spaces, I know what it does but really haven't tried using it although I should give it a shot as it may help alot. My problem is I always have so many things open and never enough room for them on my screens.

I cannot live without spaces, it is so much a part of my everyday computing style now

Definitely a part of mine. I have CompizFusion on Ubuntu on my desktop set up the same way. The one OS that's still way behind is Windows. I would have thought they'd add it to 7. Not like it's new or anything.

I find myself trying to activate spaces on all my computers now. It is the ultimate desktop management tool. But for development, I still like a larger screen for multiple windows of the same task.

ViViD, I didnt realize Ubuntu had a spaces like program. Im running Ubuntu on my PS3 to play around with Linux.

Oh yea. You can use Picker for basic functionality. I use Compiz Fusion (looks, dare I say it, even nicer than mac!) but it requires hardware graphics acceleration, which PS3 Linux doesn't get.

I might be creating a linux box from my old PC when I get the new iMac. Ill give Compiz Fusion a try. Good info!

How in the heck do you run two monitors off of the iMac? I thought it supported only one?

nah, the only way if would hurt your eyes is if you were to sit in dark and have the light up all the way.

other than that, if you're in a normal light environment, your eyes will be fine

Haha, I've got to agree... I'm actually currently using my 58" plasma as my computer monitor after having used my 40" Sony for a long time before that. You really do get used to it quickly and it isn't too much, at least not for me. Currently, I sit on the floor in front of it when using the computer. It is awesome, I envy the higher res of that 27" and the ACD 30" as well - could really go for that. (In a bit of flux in my life right now, so this is my current situation)

Have you actually read what I said before you replied? If you're sitting "1.5 - 2 feet" away from a large screen... it's not feasible to think you'd have to move your head?

I still don't quite understand. The only reason that you wouldn't be able to use it as an actual iMac now would be if you needed to see output from both computers at the same time.

You could still use the computer for rendering, movie encoding, or even listening to music by switching back and forth with command-F2.

He won't be running two monitors off the iMac, he'll be running 3 off his Mac Pro, one of which will be a 27" iMac in "monitor mode"

Ot

OT - Apple has made many bad design choices.

Poor design choice not having any previous iMac with an available video input

24" LED only having mini-Displayport input

Mac Laptops not being able to play DVDs with out turning on the the computer.
Many PC laptops do this and I would expect the same from a premium priced Apple product.

While I like Apple products, they are missing many features.
