nice idea but pointless if the thief dosnt use the internet or goes through a proxy server, and is aware that programs like this exist. tbh once a thief realises its locked or he/she has been caught its most likely going to be trashed and dumped somewhere

Do you realize that this post is from October??

I do realise this is an outdated post, but could benefit people.

My mate had this program on his MBP - can't remember what it was, but what it done was basically if the MBP was ever stolen, he could trigger this program remotely to take pictures of the people who are using it, and trace it (since the program sends out a signal) and could give that data to the police to get it back.

I wouldn't mind knowing what the program was, I'll see if I can find out. I think it was a payware service though.

Time to invest in some surveilance cameras

Time to invest in some good surveilance cameras for the hotel because now it was your laptop next time it will be someone with a 9mm pointing at your head saying give me the cash. With cameras the police have an ID on the perp.

Sucks to be you right now!!

Hope you find that MBP!!!

I'd rather have my 5-series with full coverage stolen with my Macbook Pro and phone inside then at least if the car was found and the stuff wasn't my car insurance would replace the stolen items.....

People that steal suck.

It happens that I just installed this program on my new SR MBP. It's called iAlertU, and it's available free as donationware. It sets up your machine like a car alarm: you press Menu on yor remote when NOT in Front Row, and it yips once to indicate being armed. Press Menu again to reset it.

It sounds off if any key is pressed, if the MBP is moved (uses the motion sensor), or if the lid is closed or Power held down. Oh, and it e-mails a picture of the perp to your favorite address when triggered.

i cant even think right now. just called the cops. i cant believe this happened.
i am at work, i work at my parents hotel, i am the only one on duty. its kind of busy today since its friday. an elderly couple called me from there room becuase they couldnt figure out the air conditioning unit. so i went to there room to help them out. i guess i forgot to lock the door to the office. i was gone 3 minutes. i get back, my 17" mbp is gone and so is my blackberry 8700g!!! the charger is still there, and they didnt take my ipod for some reason.
this cant be happening. cops should be here any minute, is there anything that i can do about this? there is no way i can afford another 17" mbp at this time. THIS SUCKS!!!
i hate people right now, i really do.

i think i'm going to throw up now.

iAlert is very good - been using it for a while, the feature where it takes a photo of who ever moved it and emails you it is great.

But this is the software I was talking about (thanks to Shark II for finding out)
