Mac users need hand holding and cuddling, why beat on him like this? He didn't ask for his very overpriced laptop to be stolen!

no, my overpriced laptop was not asking to be stolen, but it was my overpriced laptop that i purchased with my money, whether it was a $2600 apple or a $2400 dell (before I bought my mbp i priced out a similar dell, main differences were that the dell had a higher res monitor, X1400 video card, larger size, and the price reflected a coupon code I found online).

hope my upcoming overpriced macbook doesnt get stolen, two overpriced laptops stolen in a row, i wouldnt know what to do :)

this is a message board, meant for discussing the topics of the forum, in this case, apple computers and software. my stolen mbp fell into this category, is it any different than when someone starts a thread on how they just bought a new imac or ipod?

thanks to all those who helped me out in this situation.

So the next day, while he was inside, I showed him the video, then asked him to show me his car trunk's contents, which he regretfully did. My Dell was sitting there with it's charger. Of course, he had to pay for its total cost, and was then fired.

So he stole your Dell and left it in his trunk overnight, only to return to work the next day with it still in his car? Weird.

I've caught employees stealing things on camera before. It's always ended with immediately terminated employment, and depending on the value of what was stolen, the police and/or insurance company is often involved in proceedings against the employee. Mostly though, it usually ends with the employees returning the item (if they didn't already get rid of it) and that's it. The cops and/or insurance usually don't want to deal with the matter unless it's significant (a few to several thousand $$$ worth).

Hi,

That was what I was wondering - do you have cameras installed anywhere in the hotel? If not, and I know if it is after the fact, but I think it would be a great idea to get some installed.

Sorry for your troubles.

I'm sure he's still not convinced.

Like your calm demeanor. :) I'm just going to speak for everyone when I tell you to ignore the people who say "Why did you post this?" I could say that for all the "Which MacBook should I get" threads, or "JUST GOT MY 1sT MAC, LOLZERSZ!!1!eleven!!two!" or any of the other incredibly repetitive threads out there.

And besides, threads like this are a good kick in the ass for some people who take security seriously (ie: when they first get their laptop), and then start to slack off a bit as time passes.

i didnt understand what you meant by him not being convinced until i saw other posts by him. wow is all i can say about his attitude towards apple computers.

BTW, going to pick up a new black MB today. my parents are getting it for me, i told them i'll get one myself but they kept insisting, who can say no to that :) i'll see how the standard configured works, but more than likely i will be upgrading the ram. i think that the 80gb hard drive will work fine for me, i remember having 55gb free on my MBP.

and for generik, make way for a massive post from me on my new MB tonight. There will be tons of pictures that i will be hosting on my .mac account as well :) hope you enjoy.

lol! it's good to hear your parents offered to get you a new MacBook... it's well deserved.. no one deserves to have their stuff stolen... hope you enjoy your new MacBook and looking forward to your post tonight :D

well, me posting about posting pictures of the MB was a joke, but I think I will do it anyways, lol.
my parents actually offered to get me the 17" MBP, but i declined that, they really dont have to get me the MB but they are very adament about getting it for me. rather have them spend less on a MB then to have them go and spend the money on the MBP without me knowing. they feel like its there fault, but its not, its mine. life has given me a lot, my parents are the best gift ever though (and i guess my sister, she's pretty cool too :) )

few more hours and i shall be mac'd again.

wow sad how people think an unlocked door or window means the stuff inside is suddenly free. i had 2 very nice sets of golfclubs stolen because i forgot to close my garage door for like 3 hrs. and yea, the cops were worthless in finding anything.

no offense to cops, but yea all they are are glorified driving prosecuters. will give me a ticket going 5 over (i mean such a horrible crime on an empty road, where would society be if i didnt get caught) but nooo lets let the fools who steal stuff get off free arghhh!

i hate society at times like this

i totally feel for the loss of your computer and am glad your parents are helping you get a new one

To be fair, it's a lot easier for them to catch you (and lots of other people) speeding than it is for them to get leads on a set of missing golf clubs that disappeared without any sort of breaking and entering...I'll bet there wasn't much evidence left behind. If there weren't any witnesses, they've essentially got nothing to go on. They're investigators, not magicians.

I had a similar situation where I had a bike stolen out of my friend's garage when we left the door open for half an hour. The nutty thing was that their garage had two single-car doors, and the one that was open had a car on that side, while the bikes were on the closed side. So the thief had to scoot around the car to get into the other side of the garage, and then squeeze the bike back through to get it out through the open door.

So much for living in the safest town in America.

yea i agree but it just seems skewed to me if you know what i mean

so i got the MB, I really like it, even though I miss the MBP greatly.

I will do my research on laptop locks. Also going to learn to lock the office door when I leave the room. Going to be careful from now on, always have to learn the hardway that nothing is safe in this world.

dukebound85, sorry to hear about your golf clubs, I just started playing and I cherish my clubs, clean them all the time, I love them, like my MBP. Sucks that you can't do anything simple, like leave your garage door open in your neighborhood. Shouldnt have to always have doors locked and windows closed to be/feel safe.

Maybe we need to make an example of theives, cut there hands off or something, that will teach them. Trying to steal something with your foot or mouth isnt going to be easy.

The locks run 15 - 30 dollars and are all pretty much standard. They're a great way to keep "opportunists" from taking the computer off the desk while you're away for a few minutes.

Thats all I need. I'll just go to Best Buy tomorrow and pick one up. I am assuming that the end not connected to the laptop will be screwed/bolted into something, like the desk? Never really seen one of these in action, don't really know how they work.
Thanks.

Don't worry, I will send you some PMs of my C2D MBP birthing pics in time, all hosted off my own domain with a superior webhosting quota too

I have a portable one that also includes a battery operated motion sensor that is useful when leaving a lappy in a hotel room for example... it just loops around something large and difficult to move like pipes or the leg of a desk.

I hate dishonest people as well. Today I went to the bank to deposit some money, I wrote out the deposit slip at the side counter, and as I did that, a $20 slipped out. some dude walks over there and gets a slip. I realize what happened, check my pockets, and nothing is there. The dude stole it and looked me straight in the face and said he didn't. How ****ed up? There were three people in the bank lobby. Ugh. Anyways I'm calling them tomorrow to see if there is any video evidence, it's only $20, but thats an entire shift from 5-10 ($6 an hour then take out taxes).

truly f'd up...! can't stand people like that.

You got everything back; I don't understand why he had to also pay the total cost of the laptop. Just to be clear, I would have had him arrested and fired.

Yeah, one end has a loop on it, you just loop it through itself around something solid and the other end has a little T-Bar that goes into the spot on the side of your laptop. Some come with keys, some with combinations. I reccommend the combination ones, if you lose the key they're hard to get off without damaging the laptop.

If you are the perp what options do you have under such circumstances? It is like saying a shoplifter should not be convicted because the store detective has already recovered the item. The total cost of the laptop in this case would probably be just a bit of "coffee money" levied on the perp by the victim for the service of erasing that tape so it wouldn't get turned over to the cops

A bit late for this, but I thought it was such a neat idea that I bought a license and it's installed on my MacBook Pro right now. :)

Just install Little Snitch and Undercover is useless. Or if Little Snitch is already installed then just delete Undercover's permission. For all Undercover's sophistication it's a bit too easy to circumvent.

We had a reward for the employee who finds it (if it was located in the building somewhere). I think he planned to put it somewhere and claim he found it for the money. Me thinx, though.

I hate to rain on everybody's parade, but:

Any thief with half a brain will have long since wiped the drive and re-installed long before you're taking any pictures with your silly programs. Why go through all the trouble of trying to guess passwords and all that crud when you can just pop in an OSX disk, format and install? It's a lot easier to sell a stolen laptop that doesn't have some random named accounts on it, too...
