all good suggestions for the future. its one of those things that you dont think about until it happens. that undercover software looks really cool, gonna have to try that in the future. 8 years of working here, never had a theft problem, until today.

anyways, i talked to my sister (i had made a thread about her wanting to sell her 12" PB for a MB). she is so cool, she wants to give me her 12" PB!! i'm not going to take it, she should keep it, i'll figure something out myself.

sorry to bust your bubble but i highly doubt the person who stole it is going to stick around the hotel, i hope i'm wrong and you find your mbp, but i just don't think anyone would stick around after doing that...

shady people man, i feel for you

Give slick a break. He has just gone through a truamatic experience.

If you don't like the thread don't read it.

It's not that I don't like the thread. The only reasonable advice to give is to say call your insurance company. This isn't the old west where you can go duel it out.

Borrow your dads phone and go to the likeliest scumbag(s) room and call your phone, see if you can hear the phone ring.

knocked on the guest rooms, half of the people werent in there rooms. the people that were there, all seemed nice enough, but nothing came from it. i already tried calling my cell, goes straight to voicemail, so its more than likely turned off.
its a good thing i have a back up drive at home and have all my pics and music and documents backed up on it.

time to check my finances, see whats in the budget.

Slick that sucks, I can't believe it, I hope you get this horrible ordeal sorted out...

My friend a while back had his Powerbook stolen from his house, someone broke in and took it among other things. So being relatively fresh in the "stolen notebook feeling" I defiantely know what you're going through.

Check out this website when you get a new notebook...

Go to home/home office- the program is called LoJack.

i thought this was going to be another young punk got drunk and passed out and got his laptop stolen thread but i was wrong

i am very sorry to hear what happened there was nothing you could do you were working i hope you find it this is a d@mn shame

could this have been a setup ?
someone called you away from your post to distract you and swipe your stuff?

some one had to know you were gone been watching listening or something
they didnt just happen to notice you were gone by accident and say ill just help myself to this stuff it sounds like a distraction theft

umm a safe bolted to the floor. With a a pair of wire cutter that i could fit in my pocket would be all i need to pick up your laptop.

like the new avatar generik

Yeah, that avatar seems to fit better

I once bought this gizmo from Targus known as the "Defcon" or something, but it doesn't really fit the a that well. Looks really flimsy with the thing jutting out in a corner.

i doubt it was a distraction theft. the people that called me for help were an elderly couple. i end up helping a lot of elderly people with the electronic locks, televisions, and a/c units.
what i think happened? i went up to the second floor to help the guests. while i was up there, someone came to the front desk for something. rang the bell, got no response. came over to the office door, knocked, then opened it. saw no one in there, saw a laptop and phone, grabbed it, and left. could be a guest in the hotel, could have been someone who came in the front door looking for a room (and ended up with $3000 in electronics).
i can speculate all night, its not going to help. nothing i can really do other than to not make the same mistakes again.
it just sucks. damn thieves! i hope my mbp was faulty and the battery explodes in there lap!

I've been seeing more and more security cameras at the front desks of many hotels.

You might want to consider installing one, even if it's just one of those boxes with a blinking LED that doesn't actually do anything...

Sorry for your loss...

MAC Address

This might help you find out if your computer is still in the hotel.

1) Find your MBP box (the black one that it came in).
2) Look for a label (color white) that has the mbp build info on it, the code might look like this, (2.0/1GB/100GB/SD) something like that.
3) Look on that label for something like a MAC address or Ethernet ID, it will look something like this (a1:b2:c3:d4:e5:f6:g7:h8).
4) When you have the address its time to find a computer in the office to work from.
5) When you have a workstation (note this must have access to the hotel's wi-fi router), log in to your router and on its web interface look for a menu or window of conected devices.
6) When you have that window up, compare all the MAC or Ethernet ID's to the one on your mbp box. If you find a match its time to call back the police and do a room search.

Best of luck to you, JohnMC.

just called my dad up. having him locate the box, its in my room (glad i kept it). i'm so glad apple puts the mac addy on the packaging, this is helpful. there are still some people online right now, but it seems as though most people are out (friday night, dinner time). hopefully this turd tries to use the computer tonight. thanks for that bit of info, really helpful at this point, and encouraging.

i already cancelled the phone, didnt want my minutes used up. if the dude was smart, he would have removed the sim already, i dont think you track a phone with no sim card in it.
what sucks is i got the phone cheap because i signed an agreement with t-mobile. i have to fulfill my agreement, so i have to buy a new phone, and this time, it will be at full price. more than likely, i wont be getting a blackberry, with having to buy a new laptop, i dont want to have a $400 phone purchase to deal with.
when it rains, it pours.

I guess on the plus side, sort of, you can join us and wait for the Merom MacBooks to come out....

But I really feel for ya, what a shame. I would be so pist off - I'd probably go rob someone else of their Mac laptop.

i dont know how long i want to wait for a merom apple laptop. i can pretty much kiss a new 17" mbp out of the question, it was hard to justify at the time. i am probably going to get a macbook, or if i can, find a really cheap g4 pb with wifi to tide me over until after the holidays. i have a ps3 reserved, no doubt its going on ebay when i get it, rather sell it for profit and buy a new laptop then to actually have a ps3.
i would love to buy a new top of the line laptop again, but it wont be happening for a while.
i do know that i am sticking with apple laptops for now :)

No Problem, glad to help. I really hope you catch that bad boy. Good Luck, JohnMC.

This is excitting, kind of like an action movie.

I hope you find the sucka.

That really really sucks :(

If it were me, I'd take a cellphone equipped with bluetooth, and walk around the halls scanning.

If you manage to find your MBP (I'm pretty sure bluetooth stays on while its asleep) you can send a file to it and it will wake up.

That should give you an idea of where abouts it is.
