That really really sucks :(

If it were me, I'd take a cellphone equipped with bluetooth, and walk around the halls scanning.

If you manage to find your MBP (I'm pretty sure bluetooth stays on while its asleep) you can send a file to it and it will wake up.

That should give you an idea of where abouts it is.

wouldnt the phone need to be paired with the laptop in order to send a file?

anyways, still nothing, not looking hopeful at this time.

It would rock if you could catch them! If not, your insurance should buy both your MBP and your phone (so I wouldn't worry too much about extra expenses). The only thing that would worry me are any logins that are store in your keychain. Especially if they're for things like amazon when you might have credit card info stored.

This reminds me of the excitement that built up over the P-p-p-p-PowerBook :) Hope you get some sort of retribution or reparations!

whose insurance should cover it? the hotels? if so, i'll have my dad call about it.
i'm not worried about the keychain info. i only stored website logins for forums, and i am going to have them all changed (the passwords that is). but my mail is set up on the mbp, i have a .mac account, can i somehow login to my .mac and set it so it wont allow the mail.app to recieve emails?
i'm going home now, i dont think the person (if they are still in the bulding) will be using the internet with my laptop.
i hope they step on a rusty nail and their foot falls off, thats what i'm wishing for, bastard.
thanks for all the help, suggestions, and sympathy, i appreciate it.

umm a safe bolted to the floor. With a a pair of wire cutter that i could fit in my pocket would be all i need to pick up your laptop.

That's for sure...

Not that it helps Slick any (poor guy). But I've had plenty of devices stolen over the years that were "locked". I have yet to see any laptop lock on the market that I couldn't personally defeat within a matter of seconds with a simple tool. All they do is keep a casual passer-by from snagging it if they happen to stumble across it. But seriously, most laptop locks are braided cable with a thin cover or rubber sheath orver them. A decent pocket knife can cut through them if the user knows how to use their knife. Someone looking to pick up a laptop and smart enough to bring a pair of wire cutters with them, which easily fit in a pocket, can remove most laptop locks in a matter of about 1.5 seconds if they've mastered the art of squeezing and rotating the cutters at the same time.

There's a saying: "locks are for honest people" or "locks are only to keep honest people honest". And that's the truth. A thief is still going to steal your goods if he wants to.

I hate dishonest people as well. Today I went to the bank to deposit some money, I wrote out the deposit slip at the side counter, and as I did that, a $20 slipped out. some dude walks over there and gets a slip. I realize what happened, check my pockets, and nothing is there. The dude stole it and looked me straight in the face and said he didn't. How ****ed up? There were three people in the bank lobby. Ugh. Anyways I'm calling them tomorrow to see if there is any video evidence, it's only $20, but thats an entire shift from 5-10 ($6 an hour then take out taxes).

As far as my limited knowledge of insurance goes, the hotel insurance should cover it.

I haven't used .mac before, so I can't explain how, but if you change the password the MBP wouldn't be able to access the account anymore—unless your computer thief happens to be a brilliant hacker.

In any case, change all of these logins ASAP because the thief could lock you out of the sites that have keychain items. Of course, in all actuality, the common thief will not think of this, but it's a good precaution.

just saw the thread.

i'm sorry for your loss slick.

that really sucks. what the hell is wrong with people.

Buy a Dell, then no-one will want to steal it (or take the risk of having their arms exploded when the battery detonates :p).

Seriosuly, I dont know what I would do if my Mac was stolen. Sorry about your loss.

While I appreciate that the letter of the law says that you can't check occupied rooms, I suspect I wouldn't have asked and just done it if the room was empty - making the excuse that I was dropping in extra towels. If you'd found it, the thief could hardly have proved ownership and while it would have meant no prosecution was possible, you'd have it back.

You do recall that Apple recalled the same batteries manufactured by Sony for the same reason, right? Along with Toshiba and Fujitsu so far, possibly more coming in the future. This was not a Dell or Apple or anyone but Sony issue.

I reckon that that if your MBP was stolen while you were working at the hotel, it should be up to the guys that run the hotel to buy you a new MBP.

I doubt thats how it works though, but it sure as hell should be.

Anyhow, if whoever stole it has been using it, the battery would be flat by now, so he/she won't be using it untill he/she can get a charger.

It really sucks though, I'd kill the bastard who stole my powerbook if it ever happened.

Yes, this is quite a tragedy. I couldnt go a day without my laptop (even if it is an 8 year old compaq)

For a temporary replacement laptop, try an iBook G4. Thier good, depednable computers. Any model of them are good, even the G3's are still good.

However, I recomend the newest iBook models. Because the fastest the made were 1.66 GHz, and I'm not sure how fast the Macbook (Pro?) is.

Yep... And it's been somewhat hushed, but Sony has recalled a ton of batteries for their own VAIO notebooks as well and for several smaller OEMs including Sager and WinBook. The reality of it is that Sony had a production series of batteries (as many as 10 million units) that have the potential to overheat to the point of combustion. Of these several million batteries, only a handful of cases with any credibility have been reported and Sony is taking the pro-active approach and recalling all potentially affected units. From Sony's point of view, it's all about marketing and they can't beat this type of publicity when it comes so cheap -- having their name splattered across the name and on the news all the time about them fixing a potential problem.

A long shot....

Did you buy your MBP with an American Express?

Did you buy within the last 90 days?

If yes, it is covered incase of theft up to $1000 or so depending the type of card.

Just incase.

can't you call your cell company and have them use egps location or what not to help you find your phone? Or have someone call your phone to see what is up?

Slick,

Super sorry dude. The only thing I ever got stolen was my crap-ass mountain bike in college. It was covered under my parents homeowners and I got $600 for a bike with a street value of about $40 (it was six years old). I was pretty happy with how that went.

This might not help you if you live with your parents, but to everyone else: Renter's insurance is a great deal. My GF and I are covered for $25,000 in belongings and our laptops are scheduled for retail value. So, if anything happens to them, even outside our home, they are covered with no deductable. Total cost is like $160 a year. It's good piece of mind.

1. About the stealing--you'd be suprised. I brought my Inspiron 700m to a business meeting before, after it was over I left in the meeting room so I could go get a quick lunch. When I came back it was gone. Of course, I checked the security cameras throughout the building/rooms/parking lot, and saw exactly who took it (an employee, who was in the meeting), noticed they put it in their car trunk. So the next day, while he was inside, I showed him the video, then asked him to show me his car trunk's contents, which he regretfully did. My Dell was sitting there with it's charger. Of course, he had to pay for its total cost, and was then fired.

2. I have had Dell batteries explode on me as well. Another reason for switching to Mac. Although, Dell DID send me a free, newer, and much better spec'd SYSTEM, not a battery (although battery detonation would and did destroy the laptops themselves). My 700m was a victim as well :( .

Not trying to be a hard---, but dude, if I had my laptop stolen, the last thing I would doing was starting a thread on MacRumors. We all have issues, but I am not going to start a "somebody crapped on me" thread everytime somebody screws me over.

Wish you the best, but deal with it privately, not on a thread.

that sucks dude,ya i think its time for security cams. And dont go fro fake blinking ones, some people that would be stealing stuff wouldnt even realize the camera.

Ask if the operator can block the EMEI from the network. This is the equipments unique ID which is recorded by telecoms switches. Its not normally a standard practice but you should at least ask them.

If the SIM was switched with another provider, and its unlocked then unless they have a reciprocal agreement, theres not a lot that can be done.

We used to record this information in billing systems in Germany but, its not done on my current assignment. I wanted them to implement this type of functionality when we introduced Blackberry but they declined. Peeves me off a little when people can do this but don't. I would like to know that the phone company knew which handset I had and if the IMSI and EMEI didn't match they could alert to possible fraud.

Mac users need hand holding and cuddling, why beat on him like this? He didn't ask for his very overpriced laptop to be stolen!
