Where is "iPad" going to fit in on the Apple.com menu bar? It's already 980px in width, which about as big as it can get before you start ruining the experience for the many people limited to a 1024x768 resolution. And that is something that Apple will not do.

Will they make the other buttons smaller? Will the text on those buttons still be able to fit?

Will they have "iPad & iPhone"?

Will they replace another button?

ARE THERE ANY RUMOURS ABOUT THIS? WE NEED TO KNOW.

Change the bar. Not that big of a deal.

It would never look like that. Each button including the Apple button is the same size (about 118px).

When the iPhone came out, Apple had a different design and it was much smaller, so they could afford to add another button.

This is really interesting and I'm surprised more people aren't curious as to what Apple will do with this.

Maybe a new site design?

Or maybe they'll do something daring…

Like they removed the floppy drive from the iMac…

The disc drive in the Macbook air…

The button on the Macbook trackpad…

Maybe they will push web design forward into the new decade by not catering to those with small resolutions anymore.

Like those daring, revolutionary developers who were the first to NOT design their sites for 800x600…

Maybe Apple is going to create a new revolution in website design size?

I guess we can only wait and see.

If they didn't change it for the iMac/iPod/iPhone, they're not changing it for the Tablet.

But the tablet is the most important thing Steve has ever done (quote).

You're not thinking big enough.

I doubt its a big deal, they're probably going to add "+ iPad" to the iPhone like they did with "iPod + iTunes". When they do these changes to the site, the tablet would be already announced, so I doubt anyone is going to care.

I don't think the most important things Steve has ever done includes some stupid website nav bar update.

Ah, the subforum continues it's journey to proper MacRumors forum subsection status - the duplicate threads, the locked threads, the moved threads, the threads about who knows what...

It isn't rocket science for them to change the website. COnsider that once it's announced, that big fat juicy space in the middle of the homepage will, alongside maybe the new iMacs, and other info from the event, pay respect to the new tablet announcement.

Just make the :apple: tab smaller. Simples.

Maybe a new site design?

Apple doesn't even have an iPhone-optimized (mobile) website but you think the size of the nav buttons is going to cause Jobs to lose sleep?

I think, if they don't lump the tablet under the iPod or under the Mac (either of which is likely) they'll probably make the home button much smaller (possibly even square) and then shave a few pixels off each button.

I don't think it will be iPad + iPhone. It looks so wrong next to the iPod + iTunes

WHAT IF they change iPod + iTunes to "iPod + iPhone" and then give the iPad/iSlate/tablet it's own button? That would be interesting.

I think they should just drop the downloads button and make it part of support

The OP has to be joking. No one cares.

Um no I'm not joking. If you don't care, don't reply. There are threads about Apple stock, threads about Google execs saying they have a stable relationship with Apple, and I don't care, but I don't go into them and say that because SOME people care.

There are Apple designers wondering about this problem right now and wondering what to do about it, so YES some people care.

NOBODY CARES THAT YOU DON'T CARE.

Why would they have a mobile-optimized site? That would be admitting that the MobileSafari isn't as good as the real thing.

And they won't make the home button smaller. It's balanced right now, and it looks good. It also serves a purpose, and deserves as much as space as the rest of the buttons.

Do you not realize how important the Apple.com website is? It's not "some stupid website", it's the first place many people go when they are interested in an Apple product. And I said the iPad is the most important thing he's ever done, not the website.

Mobile Safari isn't as good as the real thing because 3G isn't as fast as a regular, high-speed internet connection and the iPhone screen is both smaller and differently proportioned than a regular Mac screen. They should at least make a mobile Apple Store site because trying to read reviews or look for something on the iPhone is a struggle, at best.

It's actually not balanced. The search area is bigger than the rest of the buttons, plus all the other buttons have text whereas the home button is an icon. What balance the nav does have would not be disrupted by changing the width of the home button; it might even enhance it.

They will not do it! Their stance is that the iPhone browses the "real web". They wouldn't be very consistent if they redirected all iPhones to an "iPhone-friendly" version of their site!

And the search is different. It's not a button. The apple is an icon but so what? If they make the Apple button smaller than the rest of the buttons I will eat my hat.

I disagree with the person who mentioned removing the "downloads" button. Where would people (especially Windows users) go to download Safari? Quicktime?

I stand by my "iPod + iPhone" button :D

And if they make dramatic changes to the website just for the tablet launch, I will eat mine.

I'm not saying they will make the home button smaller, I'm just saying something like that is more likely than a major overhaul. I also think "iPod _____" or "MacBook _____" ("Slate", "Tablet", etc.) is more likely than "iPad" or "iSlate" or some other completely new name.

Support.

I think iTunes is too important to Apple to remove it from the nav.

Once the tablet is announced, they probably will change the design of the site, or in the near future anyway. The site normally reflects what OS X looks like, it looks like Leopard currently, so I assume they are going to go in the direction of Snow Leopard, or at least something similar like this:

I don't think they'll make "dramatic changes", so we're in agreement there.

But I also highly doubt that this tablet will fall under the iPod or Macbook lines. It will be a completely new line of products and I will eat both of our hats if I am proved to be wrong :D

Also it's not very intuitive to go to "Support" to download Safari.

ARE THERE ANY RUMOURS ABOUT THIS? WE NEED TO KNOW.

Nobody will write a rumor about where will the Tablet go, it might just go under the Mac category (i hope so), in the worst case into the iPod+iTunes one, and most possible near the iPhone, i think noone really cares about where they will fit that on the website, we'll have to see that 2 days

If only for consistency, the main apple.com :apple: top left links to the same page - one could say it's redundant.

remove it for that page - bish bash bosh?

The Apple store has already been changed several times in preparation for the tablet. Web previews for iTunes? Updated site content to be finger friendly?

Currently http://www.apple.com/ has iMac - BIG AND BOLD.
That's where the main link to the tablet will be. Would it really take many Apple website developers to ponder how to accommodate a new product?

I think they should just remove the search button.

WHAT? Are you serious?

The Apple button AND search buttons are necessary.

The Apple button takes you home, wherever you are, and lots of people use search boxes on websites to find things.
