Where is "iPad" going to fit in on the Apple.com menu bar? It's already 980px in width, which about as big as it can get before you start ruining the experience for the many people limited to a 1024x768 resolution. And that is something that Apple will not do.

Will they make the other buttons smaller? Will the text on those buttons still be able to fit?

Will they have "iPad & iPhone"?

Will they replace another button?

It would never look like that. Each button including the Apple button is the same size (about 118px).

When the iPhone came out, Apple had a different design and it was much smaller, so they could afford to add another button.

This is really interesting and I'm surprised more people aren't curious as to what Apple will do with this.

I doubt its a big deal, they're probably going to add "+ iPad" to the iPhone like they did with "iPod + iTunes". When they do these changes to the site, the tablet would be already announced, so I doubt anyone is going to care.

It isn't rocket science for them to change the website. COnsider that once it's announced, that big fat juicy space in the middle of the homepage will, alongside maybe the new iMacs, and other info from the event, pay respect to the new tablet announcement.

Just make the tab smaller. Simples.

I think, if they don't lump the tablet under the iPod or under the Mac (either of which is likely) they'll probably make the home button much smaller (possibly even square) and then shave a few pixels off each button.

Um no I'm not joking. If you don't care, don't reply. There are threads about Apple stock, threads about Google execs saying they have a stable relationship with Apple, and I don't care, but I don't go into them and say that because SOME people care.

There are Apple designers wondering about this problem right now and wondering what to do about it, so YES some people care.

Do you not realize how important the Apple.com website is? It's not "some stupid website", it's the first place many people go when they are interested in an Apple product. And I said the iPad is the most important thing he's ever done, not the website.

Mobile Safari isn't as good as the real thing because 3G isn't as fast as a regular, high-speed internet connection and the iPhone screen is both smaller and differently proportioned than a regular Mac screen. They should at least make a mobile Apple Store site because trying to read reviews or look for something on the iPhone is a struggle, at best.

It's actually not balanced. The search area is bigger than the rest of the buttons, plus all the other buttons have text whereas the home button is an icon. What balance the nav does have would not be disrupted by changing the width of the home button; it might even enhance it.

They will not do it! Their stance is that the iPhone browses the "real web". They wouldn't be very consistent if they redirected all iPhones to an "iPhone-friendly" version of their site!

Once the tablet is announced, they probably will change the design of the site, or in the near future anyway. The site normally reflects what OS X looks like, it looks like Leopard currently, so I assume they are going to go in the direction of Snow Leopard, or at least something similar like this:

I don't think they'll make "dramatic changes", so we're in agreement there.

But I also highly doubt that this tablet will fall under the iPod or Macbook lines. It will be a completely new line of products and I will eat both of our hats if I am proved to be wrong

Also it's not very intuitive to go to "Support" to download Safari.

The Apple store has already been changed several times in preparation for the tablet. Web previews for iTunes? Updated site content to be finger friendly?

Currently http://www.apple.com/ has iMac - BIG AND BOLD.
That's where the main link to the tablet will be. Would it really take many Apple website developers to ponder how to accommodate a new product?

The Apple button AND search buttons are necessary.

The Apple button takes you home, wherever you are, and lots of people use search boxes on websites to find things.
