I think I had most of the OPO phones from the first one to the 6t. But have always been disappointed with their cameras.
Then their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Everything has to be shipped back to OPO. Samsung at least has partnerships with some local companies like UBreakifix for some repairs.
OPO has been excellent at software updates and adding new features.
But the camera always disappoints. Now that they have stepped into the flagship pricing arena...they better deliver on the camera more now than ever.

Agree overall except on the responsiveness point. The S20 now has a 240Hz touch response. Makes a world of difference in perceived responsiveness. It is faster than my Pixel 4XL was and feels identical to the OP7 Pro that I had. Never thought I'd say that a Samsung phone feels just as fluid as a OP phone, but it does to me. Of course I have not used the OP8 Pro...sure it could be even snappier. Will definitely watch and enjoy all of the OP8 Pro video reviews.

I'm talking about Note 10+ and previous Samsung devices. Never used S20/Ultra, so can't really dispute or agree with you on that matter :)

Not sure if the people spending $900 for a phone would be looking at OnePlus. I mean that's within the price range of the established brands like Samsung, and Samsung is quite aggressive in promos.

Would have liked to see something in between the 8 and 8 Pro at the price of the 8. Based on the reviews for the 8, the camera doesn't seem like a big enough upgrade over the 7 Pro and it still lacks wireless charging. For the 8 Pro, I question how much value users are getting from the camera + wireless warp charging + 240Hz to justify the price. I would be in if the 8 was only upgraded w/ Qi fast charging and an improved camera.

Thoughts on why they decided to make the glacial green the only base model available while the onyx and ultramarine blue available only on the upgraded Pro? May differ by country, but at least in the US it seems this way. I was always disappointed in how the colors weren't available at every configuration, and I think this will be a sticking point for some who may want a certain color but not willing to spend an extra $100.

Some of the early reviews praised the camera as being a big leap forward, but a lot of the reviews today (while still saying its greatly improved) throw in lines like the camera is catching up to Samsungs. Which I find confusing. So they have gone from easily in 4th among the mainstream devices to closer to 3rd but still in 4th? Hmmm.

It'll be interesting to see how many units they move of the 8 Pro. Seems like it would be an awesome alternative to the Exynos S20 outside of the US. Otherwise, not sure. Probably right on par and fighting with the S20.

So I’ve gone and ordered a OnePlus 8 Pro (UK - managed to get a order in for the limited pop up box yesterday after the announcement) - it’s going to be my first android phone in over 6 years, but I just really fancy a change from iPhone. I will still have my iPad for my iOS fix, and the specs look great, I’m really not a fan of Samsung phones, my friend uses a samsung for work and I don’t like their UI, OnePlus looks much more like stock android.

I will miss my Apple Watch, but I’m looking forward to going back to my watches and changing it up every now and again, and I’m going to get a cheap fitness band for my other wrist. Don’t know if I will be regretting my decision but I’m going to give it a go.

I love the idea of the OP8 Pro, but IMO it's way too much money for a OnePlus. They're trying to compete with Samsung, but IMO they don't have things like the service network, etc, which kinda help to justify the cost of Samsung models.

I was worried about missing my Apple Watch when switching, but I've slowly been transitioning back to regular watches, and it's almost like a breath of fresh air, not constantly checking notifications!

It’s arrived! Just getting everything set up now, I love the feel of the phone, it feels very premium. It’s currently copying my iCloud data across (contacts and photos)

first impressions have been great, the screen is amazing.

Congratulations. There are others still considered as 'low standard phone', complaining about camera, service what not, they are themselves 'low standard'. It is the fast charge and OS that will blow the competitors away.

Does the 8 have "unofficial water resistance" where they cheapened out on the rating certification process?

I don't think people see the OP8 Pro as a low standard phone at all. I think the diehard OnePlus fans might feel like the OP8 Pro is a betrayal of what they thought OnePlus was, which is a flagship killer at budget prices. But those same people wanted wireless charging and IP rating and a better camera. So what did they expect? OP to add all that with no added cost?

From the reviews I've read OP have made a no compromises phone for the first time and it's getting great reviews. The weak point is still the camera but the same could be said about the S20 line.

I’m already struggling, I didn’t realise how far into the Apple eco system I had gotten myself!

The screen on the OnePlus is leagues ahead of my iPhone 11 Pro, the difference is very noticeable, but the experience just isn’t as fluid for me. I managed to get everything across pretty easily, migrated my iCloud passwords over to 1password, photos and contacts, all my iMessages transferred across etc but I’m already finding I’m missing my iPhone. Apple Music isn’t as good an experience vi the android app, and while the refresh rate is amazing I do find some websites can feel smoother on the iPhone, chrome can sometimes feel jumpy or staggered if there is a lot going on. Photos are great on the OnePlus, to my eyes slightly behind the iPhone but their wide angle lens is much better.

I think overall I was expecting something fresh and new, but the experience on android is very much of the same, with some niggles - the tech has matured so much thesedays that a phone is just a phone. I think if I really want something new and different to satisfy my tech bug it would have to be something like a foldable phone, when the next generation of devices comes about.

So I will give it the weekend and see how I get on

Hang in there and try to give yourself time to acclimatise to the OS and the various ways of doing things.

But if you don't get on with it...drop me a PM ?

I can certainly be jarring to make a wholesale switch. As @Bass suggested, gotta give yourself some time to really put it through it’s paces. Try to wait out your return window before ultimately making a choice.

One suggestion regarding your web browsing experience is to ditch Chrome—I’m sure some/many here will disagree but IMO, it’s a terrible browsing experience on Android, IMO. A big part of that is no integrated content blocking. Try either Firefox or my personal favorite, Brave. Brave is built on Chromium but it‘s a much smoother experience vs. Chrome, offers bookmark syncing across platforms, has password management integration (1Password will work more consistently with it) and it has integrated content blocking. Firefox also offers content blocking and has bookmark syncing across all platforms.

What app do you use for email? I don’t know if OnePlus has their own native app or if it’s any good but I love both Spark and Outlook. Spark is my go to now that it’s on Android—just arrived last year—get a consistent experience on Android, iOS or MacOS now.

Feel free to seek suggestions/advise for any other areas of concern. You’ll find the member that frequent this forum are super knowledgable and since most of us have lots of experience on both iOS, Android, MacOS and Windows, can offer lots of suggestions that can help with the transition.

Agree with ditching chrome as the browser. It's slow and chews battery. Brave and Firefox are both good shouts. But my personal favorite is Samsung's Browser.

A bit of a tangent here but I wonder how much one could de Google this device? Would likely require a rom such as lineage is without the gapps, f-droid for apps.

I don't think one could completely get away from Google. Might be an experiment to tinker with.

I like Samsung as well, is actually the closest in UI to mobile Safari, but couldn't remember if 3rd party password management app integration worked. At some point IIRC, it didn't and I can't check again until my Pixel 4 XL arrives tomorrow.

Yeah it works now. I use LastPass with it just fine.

You are right that tech as matured to near equal, but I’d see that as an advantage for Android. If you are the average user, then they are essentially equal. If you are more of a certain type of power use, while both phones can do the same thing, Android makes it easier to do certain things. It’s a convenience that adds up over time.

Also, I agree with the ditch chrome sentiment. Brave is outstanding. Also I’m enjoy Firefox fenix. It’s the beta browser for Mozilla, but it’s completely redesigned and incredible. It still has bugs, as to be expected, but it has quickly become a favorite of mine.

Also, I’d recommend signal as your go to messaging app.
