..and Facetime.

Mine gets used for both work and home facetime calls. In fairness, the ipad is usually stationary for facetime, sitting on a desk, so OIS less important, but image quality in lower light is.

The front camera has never had OIS, only the rear.

Yes, I know.

I use the rear camera for FaceTime, for the better quality, and video out the screen to a large display, for viewing my end.

But as I said, OIS less important for this situation, as the ipad is in a fixed position.

Ah, make sense. For sure, if the iPad is static then OIS would offer no benefit, in fact if active could actually degrade the image quality but I'm assuming it is shut off if no motion is detected.

Apple try to save $$$ and keep prices rock bottom for the new iPad Pro line. They seem to be doing a good job of limiting features with the new iPad Pros.

It may have an effect if you use the iPad as a document scanner which seems to be the more common use case. In any case it seems unnecessary consider the iPhone XS seems to have OIS. I don't understand why Apple tries to make everything so damn thin, now the new iPad Pro has a bigger camera bump.

Bump is for you to buy a case for it to level it flat! Apple are geniuses at creating additional needs for their devices.

One thing many of you may be missing is that as you age, your hands may not be as steady as they once were.

OIS is one of the main reasons that I upgraded from my SE to the 8.

who uses iPad for photography? Quick snap I get it but for anything proper you really don't want an iPad so what is the big deal? We all have iPhones and I don't think I've ever used the camera on the iPad as i have an iPhone which always makes better pictures

Now there's a lot of hyperbole on this site but...this is no loss. 1% of iPad owners might use their camera on it....a couple times.

The XS is 1.8mm thicker than the new iPad Pros. It also likely has a significantly thinner display assembly. So there is much more thickness to work with.

Why would it? You wouldn’t use/need OIS to scan a document...
Why not? You need OIS if you want to take pictures of stationary objects in low light. If anything is stationary, it's a document. So, OIS is exactly what you need.

just realized this when comparing the new and old pros on Apple websites, the 10.5 and 12.9 2nd gen has the exact camera as the iPhone 7, with optical image stabilization. The new iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 don’t.

It’s a tablet so obviously not a massive issue, but recently with my 12.9 2nd gen while reading or watching a movie I’ll be able to switch to the camera fast and get a really decent picture of my dog looking at a squirrel or something, it’s kind of sad to see that little extra removed, was it due to thinness? Assuming because it has smart HDR it’s the Xr camera without the stabilization, so perhaps better pictures unless in low light?

Also went from 6 element lens to 5

Just noticed that is disappointing. So $200 premium over last year for speakers, and edge to edge screen, and A12X. (NO other screen improvement in contrast, HDR, anti reflective, brightness advertised....)

Last time we got an upgrade panel, camera, and chip for the same price as the model before.

The more I look at this model the less I like it  and that scares me usually with Apple I tell myself I don’t want it and then after two looks of the product page I’m trying to figure out how to get it.

To be fair you’re disregarding a lot of cool features!

New folio compatibility with 2 viewing angles
New Pencil with the double click functionality and inductive charging
New design with improved screen:body ratio
USB-C port with charging out and 4K video output
FaceID with Portrait mode and Animoji

It is very expensive, though. My gripes are the camera downgrades and the fact that they apparently kept 6GB RAM exclusive to the 1TB model.

I guess the problem for me is that I wouldn’t use -any- of those ( I mean forced to use edge to edge, but the panel isn’t improved so it doesn’t seem compelling) guess the value for this generation is just skewed way the wrong way for me personally :confused:

I’ll buy some Apple stock instead of a new iPad this year :p

I honestly don't care even if Apple removed the back camera, much less a 'downgrade'. Throughout the 6 years of owning my iPad 4, I could count the number of times I used it to take a photo with 2 hands.

Anyone who uses an iPad to take photos should be shot. /s

It just seems like 'value' has taken a hit

Like I said, I usually take a picture or two when I'm reading and look up and my dog looks adorable, or something like that, I take my XS Max anywhere I actually want to -try- to take photos. It was just something I found myself enjoying on the 2nd gen 12.9 that I hadn't experienced on any iPad before, the pictures i felt were good enough I could simply swipe to the camera app if the occasion warranted instead of stumbling around for my phone and the dog moves etc, some of my favorite photos in the past couple months were taken on a iPad simply because I had it when the moment happened and it had a decent camera.

since now i can use the camera of my iphone with continuity in mojave for documents, the ipad camera remain the second choice

I’m not sure if u guys know how cameras work, but by making the cameras thinner, they’ve been able to dramatically improve image quality. U don’t need optical stabilization and you don’t need 6 lenses, since 5 lenses is smaller and thinner. And weighs less.

Pro feature, right there!
[doublepost=1541067736][/doublepost]It wasn't long ago Apple were pushing the iPad as a camera as it had the biggest viewfinder and there were lots of people who used it as a camera, weren't they.

Reward them by gimping it..... Tim's Apple, there it is.....

Let's be clear here, the iPad still features Image Stabilisation but it is done in software instead of optically. That does mean you will lose some image resolution when image stabilisation is used but you should still have a stabilised final image. People prefer optical because it means no reduction in image resolution and it is also considered purer because there is less image processing required but images from iOS devices are already quite heavily processed.
I think people will struggle to spot the difference in all honesty.
