I digress, the iMac is a piece of crap actually. And if you want to be all proud of yourself for ordering one of those 27 inch laptops, then mosey yourself on over to the iMac forums where other mere mortals await your enthusiasm. This here forum is for us serious power users!

Says the guy with a Mini in his sig.

Mac Mini is a fine piece of workmanship! Technically, it's my son's. But he's 13, so as long as I'm paying the bills, it goes in my signature. :D

Actually, I'm gonna miss my iMac... Had three versions during the last 6 years. Everyone who claims that you can't get work done on an iMac ignores the fact that it just helped me gather all the money for my nMP just during two weeks in December. It's a great machine!

damn you apple for not updating the cinema displays in time! Now what am I gonna place on my desk? Ugly dell monitors? It's a farce how fat and thick all monitors these days are compared to what the iMac shows is possible...

Very true. Buyers remorse lurks constantly whenever I buy new Apple kit, which recently has been every few weeks with the Air and new iPad mini. Going through a bad or good time depends on how you look at it. No regrets about either new purchases so roll on the new Mac Pro. Very excited!
When I bought my 2010 15" MBP it was an enormous amount of money to me. I was not making a ton of money at the time, but for the kind of work I was doing it was pretty much a requirement.
It has since paid or itself, and is still pretty robust thanks to an SSD install.
Did I ever regret the purchase?
Only for the first few months of belt tightening.
Far outweighed by the several years after of productivity and enjoyment.
I have always wished that I had gone for the hires screen or the next level up CPU though. Contrary to a lot of forumite opinion, you can;t have too much computer. Maybe just more power than you need at the time.

3 versions in 6 years is exactly why I want a system with longer legs... Hoping for 4-5 from the nMP

That is true on the other hand!
Hopefully it will be like you say with our nMP! I'm soooo pumped about finally having ordered one.
If 4k editing goes so well on the machine, I don't see why it shouldn't last at least the next 4 years.

Any chance orders for stock machines may be delivered earlier than the
vague February timeframe as production ramps up?

I was going to order a hex core later in the Spring after I have enough Dough-Ray-Me saved up...but all of this talk has me itchy! How many forms of payment can I split my order into? I think I have four or five credit cards where I could scrape together enough available credit (if I can add them all together) and just go ahead and get the 12 core monster! Of course, I'm getting the 64 gigs RAM too....that's a no brainer with a computer with all of this power! Bring it!

Please don't bury yourself in debt like that to get a rig. Wait until you have a good chunk of the cash, or build a hackintosh where you can buy it piece by piece.

Ordered - don't need just want!

I have bought and cancelled the Mac Pro around 3 times now.
I have a wedding to pay for in march and bought 2 Ducatis last year. Need to wait. Painfull, I hate waiting.

Well I know a few people who would do just what you said, so... :)

I know you're right....so I was kind of poking fun at them. I would never do that! I'm waiting until late spring for two reasons. First, I want to save a little more money, and secondly (most important) I want NUMBERS so I can decide exactly what configuration to buy. I was just having a little fun with this thread...as I believe the OP was too....:D

2 Ducatis, now that is extravagant. If you had just been content with one then the new Mac Pro could be yours.

Strange, but I also go thru this order then reality hits and I cancel the next day syndrome. Not this time though.I say that now, but there is too much time to wait when delivery is a vague February timeframe. Could easily loose my nerve!

Jeez, how much debt do you have?

Might throwing on a 9k computer be a little overboard?

CH...was thinking about getting a nMP for my bathroom...i have 4x4K on the wall...like to watch movies, news, etc while I take care of business. Think an 8-core would work, or should I go 12? Will probably get regular usage.

The bathroom is truly one place I feel 12 cores is overkill. I think 8 would be just fine. It's not like you're going to cut a movie in there....or are you? Mostly in the bathroom I just facebook and surf porn, so 8 cores would be great! I guess after i pay my credit cards down enough, I'll splurge for one more. I like to keep my cc's maxed out anyway!

That's funny. I was thinking about maxing out some cards, too...I haven't been running large balances, and I know the companies which handle credit reports like to see large balances because it shows how confident the consumer is in their future earnings. Okay...you're prob right...12 cores MIGHT be too much...but it's a pretty big bathroom...

Lmao before I hit the sack here :D

Having only briefly played with a 6 core can setting it up in mavericks and boot camp despite win hate it was ludicrous speed everywhere, I hated giving it back so soon a lot more than I thought I would.

You lot that don't need it but are getting one are lucky, lucky lucky bar stewards. Personally I think all you rich gits should all chip in to buy an helpful anonymous internet bloke you don't even know a can cos I hereby promise to use my 3,1 as a towel rail warmer in the bathroom.

Cheapo 4 core d700 and stock SSD bare minimum please - I'll upgrade the rest to save you money!

I'll use the can in my kitchen some of the time and I'll have to find a decent TV - any tips for dual use?

Good night! :)

Well, you have more than one bathroom, don't you? You could put one in the guest bathroom, then have Gav Mack over for tea...he could retire into your guest bathroom for a while.

But personally, I think guest bathroom is hex core at most, with 1080p monitors....let's not have them get too comfortable in there, they'll never go home!

You can use the one in adr's guest bathroom once installed, but he's probably going to want you to leave warm towels in exchange!

Wait, never mind on that last part.....

Guest room? Assuming that's a typo. So the guest house will have hexes, and the help will get...quads? I'm sure there's an in-law suite around here somewhere...but that's a whole other debate...refurb iMac or minis?? Decisions decisions....
