If you use a third party to transport the phone across the border it’s a big deal. If you have the phone in your hands before you cross the border then that is up to the individual. I will cross into the States next week with an iPhone. Of course I bought the iPhone two years ago in Canada. At US customs if they want me to pay duty as I’m an upstanding man - I will pay. Then on my return to Canada I will enquire if I should pay duty on that phone - just in case. You see, I am a law abiding citizen. Your choices may vary. 🤣

Someone better tell Linus! I thought I got that idea (that both US and Canada models don't have a SIM tray) from a recent LTT video.

it's on the Apple Canada online store:

SIM Card
  • Dual SIM (nano‑SIM and eSIM)
(the photos of iPhone 14 Pro for Canada also clearly shows the SIM card slot) :)

Let me tell you a secret that common sense gives me.

CALL the store and ask them! /facepalm

my Canadian-American friend is the one who's going to pick it up for me. the order went through just fine with a scheduled date/time for pickup. However, she just tested positive for COVID and would be staying home for the next week or so. :(

from my own experience, US Apple Stores didn't really care when I picked up my orders. I remember showing up 2 weeks after my scheduled pick-up date and they just handed me the phone without saying anything.(although that was 2 years ago)

Do Apple Stores in Canada let you pickup orders a few days late?

Thnaks!

it's already picked up... I ended up coming to Canada earlier.(swapped trips with my co-worker) Do Canadians just trust people more? I showed the Apple Store chick the pick-up email on my phone and she just handed me the phone. Didn't even check my ID or passport and just handed the phone to me, a foreigner(American) who lives 1700 miles away. :)

I'm really impressed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max with a SIM card slot! Another amazing technical achievement by Apple, Inc. Oh wait a minute.....

Glad it worked out!

As to why she just handed it to you? The lack of the sim tray is an American problem and only cared about by Apple and the people on this forum. Regular people
don’t give a flying f**k and I suspect most Apple employees up here don’t even know the attraction of someone from the States coming up here to get a phone.

Enjoy the phone cause the iPhone 15 won’t have a sim card tray up here and a 50/50 chance the Pro Max may not have USB C but instead go completely portless. So you may be hanging onto that phone for awhile!

I don’t think it’s Apple Canada it’s Canadian Government and their export rules which Apple has to follow.
I hope there’s no hold up when she goes to pick it up.
It is an Apple policy. The US store has the same conditions.

The Canadian model actually does have different band support, but there's enough overlap that it shouldn't matter. The most notable difference is the lack of mmWave.

I'm sure there will still be iPhone 15 with SIM slot in other countries(EU, Asia, Aus/NZ). As I travel to around 38 countries per year(pre-pandemic), I'm sure I'll be stopping by one country that has iPhone 15 with SIM slot.

As for charging port... I'm willing to bet that it won't happen for another 5 to 7 years. Who knows, by then, we may not even be using smartphones anymore? :)

Ya only the US has mmWave I think. In Canada I don’t think the feds have even had the auction yet for the mmWave band yet. Still a year or two out before the carriers can turn it on. Ya if your getting a Canadian iPhone 14 or for any model no mmWave.

Try Quebec and then report to us later. That province will change your mind! Guaranteed

no offense to Canadians... I love Canada, but they don't really feel like a "foreign" country to me. If they wish, they can come and annex the United States anytime. Thanks in advance! :)

I asked my friend to use my credit card to order the iPhone 14 Pro Max via the Apple Canada online store. Obviously it was because I need a phone with physical SIM card slot because my company's contracted mobile carriers(1 US and 4 foreign one) do not allow eSIM, or simply don't have eSIM at this time.

The order went through just fine and the pick-up date/time was confirmed at the Apple Store(Canada) near my friend's home.

This morning, a rep from Apple Canada called my friend and asked her if she was planning to export it. Apparently they noticed that the credit card used was a Hyatt Visa card issued by Chase(US). I sent the credit card to my friend last week and she used it to place the order online. I guess I should have asked her to use her own credit card? (don't worry, I trust her more than I trust any member of my family, including my own mother :) )

Apple Canada rep said the charge went through just fine and the order was still on track to be picked up. However, they just wanted to inform her that the iPhone or any Apple device purchased from Apple Canada online store cannot be exported, even just across the Canada/US border. The rep even sent an email with the policy to my friend. (see below)

under "Shipping Restrictions" section, it says "...You may not export any products purchased at the Apple Online Store"

My plan was to pick up the iPhone and use it with her own SIM card for 2 or 3 weeks. She will also sign up for AppleCare for this phone using her own name/address/email.(which is fine by me) When I visit Canada, I'll stop by her house and get the phone from her.

How does Apple Canada enforce this policy? (if ever?)
What US Carrier do you have?

What US Carrier do you have?

my company uses a proprietary nano SIM card that only works in just 4 countries(unlimited busienss-class data/text/voice in US, Germany, UK, Japan... phone number is a US number....unlimited as in I usually use well over 400gb/week for work while in Germany and UK, although all cellular data is routed back to corporate VPN in the US).

The company-issued phones are in-house modified Android phones based on Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with custom firmware which has no access to Google Play Store. Strangely, we are allowed to use personal iPhones.(12 or later) Obviously, that's why I had to go to Canada to get my new iPhone 14 Pro max. :)

Didn't answer my question. What carrier is it running on?

Whatever dude. And there’s no such thing as a proprietary nano sim. Your company uses some carrier out there they don’t have their own sim.

"proprietary" because it has our corporate logo on it... :) not that we are secret agents. :)

it also does not work outside of those 4 countries I listed. (strangely, it works in Guam and USVI, but probably because they are US territories)
