The last 4 iterations of OS X (Lion, ML, Mavericks and Yosemite) focused on bringing iOS connectivity features to Mac - Notes, Reminders, notification center, widgets, continuity, hand-off, etc. Is there anything more left to add to OS X?

Since iOS 8.4 is debuting new Music app, I guess the 10.11 will bring newly redesigned iTunes. And the new iTunes will probably come with music streaming features...

I really don't want anything new on 10.11. Just improved overall refinements would be amazing (Yosemite runs fine on my iMac's 100gb partition though).

I already have this in 10.10.3.

Apple needs to do a real overhaul of OS X, 10.10.3 may be a slight improvement, but Finder is still very sluggish, even on the latest Mac models. A redo would be great both for newer machines, and for older ones, since it would be lighter and snappier. Spotlight indexing is also something that could use an overhaul. This would then allow Apple to built the next set of features into OS X in a way that does not cause too much bloat. I really think that Apple should move to a tick-tock schedule, one year releasing new features, while the next year they concentrate on the nitty-gritty workings of the OS at at low level.

Agree 100%

Allow the user to change the default behaviour of the green button in System Preferences. Green button default behaviour can be set to - zoom, maximise or fullscreen. If zoom or maximise is set as default behaviour option click activates fullscreen mode instead of the other way around.

Another User posted this graphic on Facebook. I think it is an Excellent Idea. If you agree, may I suggest contacting Apple at

My List

Interface Refinements:

The following options would be a great improvement

A larger font option for the menu bar.

Larger font option for the App Store.

A Bold Text option similar to iOS 8 for the system fonts. Several clients find the narrow font hard to read.

It would be really nice if users could change the:

1. Dock color and whether the dock should be transparent or not.
2. Title Bars Color for active and inactive windows.
3. Finder Side Bar color and whether the side bar is transparent or not.
4. Set Folder Icon Color (Give us a choice of colors to choose from).

Integrate Better Snap Tool Functionality

https://itunes.apple.com/US/app/bettersnaptool/id417375580?mt=12

Set default window size for Finder and for apps. (Check box in Get Info)

Set Default Finder Column width.

Choose your Maximize option in System Preferences. (See Post Number 180)

I have been using Macs since 2006 and I still miss the third option - Maximize window (fill all available desktop space between the menu and the dock without hiding them.)

Here is a quote from OSX Daily:

"Perhaps a future version of Mac OS X will allow users to manually adjust the green maximize button behavior without having to rely on Option+clicking or third party utilities."

Performance:

Create Metal for OSX or greatly improve Open GL support to improve graphics performance. Why should Microsoft own the PC gaming market with Direct X?

Full Trim Support for non Apple installed SSD's. Windows 7 and 8 have had this for years now. How hard can it be?

Included Apps:

Notes:

Set the default font size in Notes - Current size is too small for many.

An optional top toolbar similar to the toolbar in Mail with formatting options including text highlighting would be great!

Messages:

Typing a message should work like Messages in iOS. - Send a paragraph message without pressing the control key to go to the next line.

Grab:

Share with preview option for refinement.

Save as JPEG option.

Finally, Please return SAVE AS without pressing the option key!

If you agree with these suggestions please send Apple a note at:

so basically you want the font to be bigger?

Larger font options will put a smile on many a Mac users face!

Unfortunately, fonts are not the only issue.

Users need the ability to set the following:

1. Dock color and whether the dock should be transparent or not.
2. Title Bars Color for active and inactive windows.
3. Finder Side Bar color and whether the side bar is transparent or not.
4. Set Folder Icon Color (Give us a choice of colors to choose from).
5. Integrate Better Snap Tool Functionality for window management.
6. Set default window size for Finder and for apps. (Check box in Get Info)
7. Set Default Finder Column width - stop the constant resizing.
8. Choose your Maximize option in System Preferences - Graphic in post 180

Why?

Usability, Readability and Saleability.

Studies have proven that color can enhance productivity and readability. Forcing users to stare at colors they dislike is not a recipe for productivity.

Window management and remembering window positions is also a productivity enhancement. Unnecessarily resizing and moving windows around distracts from the tasks at hand and can raise frustration levels.

I know several people who have unfortunately turned away from purchasing Macs. Why?

They found the text size too small and the interface elements and icons difficult to discern. In short, they felt the interface was too low on contrast and too gray.

These issues are starting to have a real impact on sales to the over 50 crowd. (The customers who buy really nice equipment).

Fortunately, the Mac is on a good foundation and with a few additional options it could be on a great foundation for all users and potential users.

Less limited continuity

… iOS connectivity features to Mac - Notes, Reminders, notification center, widgets, continuity, hand-off, etc. Is there anything more left to add to OS X? …

Continue a voice call that begins (or is answered) on an iPhone.

… iPhone or iPad is needed for continuity …

… Extended continuity - I mean more apps being able to do so. …

More operating systems. Continue a voice call that begins (or is answered) on OS X, on an Android device or Chromebook and so on.

… More Continuity features

my wish list:

1) more customizability for trackpad gestures. I know Apple can't realistically reach BTT customizability but they have randomly changed gesture behaviors (Ex: Show Desktop, complete removal of the application switcher gesture) which I really would like to be able to keep consistent across OS X upgrades. I shouldn't need to adjust my basic interactions with my computer because Apple thought all users would enjoy launchpad...

2) Open up the notification panel for non-app store developers. While I like the widgets in the notification panel (previously it was completely useless to me) I can imagine some even better uses for this shade which Apple will never allow. I think a dedicated window manager list (ala Witch by Many Tricks) in the notification panel would be a great way to use the space. But apple has locked this part of the OS down for no reason. This isn't iOS.

3) Wait another year to release 10.11. There is still plenty of work to do for a stable Yosemite. I'm getting extremely tired of the yearly upgrades.

Dock transparency can be got rid of by going to System Preferences > Accessibility and 'Reduce transparency'.

This also removes the transparency from the Finder side bar and drop-down menus. Makes everything look a lot better imho, but it's probably not everyone's taste.

Different coloured folder icons is an interesting one. You can, of course, tag them with a coloured dot, but the ability to switch the colour might be quite useful as well.

Yes, that is true but then you are stuck with GRAY, GRAY, GRAY everywhere.

Notes.app

My biggest wish (aside from Siri and Trim support for all SSDs and general bug-squashing) is for Notes to be developed into a more powerful alternative to Evernote and OneNote. By that I mean the ability to attach files, audio etc. to notes, coupled with some new iOS features like scanning and audio recording, and perhaps tagging too. Also a keyboard shortcut to create a new note, and a widget for notification centre. Basically a powerful, built-in note-taking application which would complete my iCloud workflow nicely (Mail-Calendar-Notes-Reminders-Stache-MindNode-Ember-Ulysses-iWork).

Back in the real world, chances of this are probably very low, but I do remember Apple acquiring a Note-taking app some time ago....Catch Notes? It was a while ago, though, and Apple has never shown much interest in Notes over the years. There's probably more likelihood that they drop it completely.

I know that OneNote is popular, but I hate it - it doesn't match the way that my brain works at all. I like to take notes chronologically with no structured organization, and retrieve information later with powerful search. Evernote is perfect for this, but I just hate the interface (especially on iOS) and the way that my data is locked into a subscription service. Simplenote is nice, but even more limited than Notes (text only). Notability is promising, but has too many bugs, especially a ludicrous incompatibility of font sizes between Mac and iOS.

Not exactly. The text and icons in Mavericks have more definition and the dock is not an ugly gray.

The Dock in Yosemite technically has no color of its own. It's simply a blurring effect on whatever is underneath it.

True if transparency is turned on. If you select increase contrast to solve other issues then you are stuck with a very dreary gray dock.

Realistically Speaking

I'd firstly like to say that I actually like the look of Yosemite, yes at first I didn't like it but it grew on me and now I have now I have absolutely no issues with the appearance. The spotlight search in the centre doesn't bother me, again at first I hated it, now I have no issues with it, I never have it open for more than a few seconds, I use it to open programs mainly. What I am wish and hoping for I don't believe is out of the question for this release.

I would like to see -

1) Bug fixes - I only have a few bugs unless I'm just not seeing them, the bugs I see are - Everytime I restart I get a extra desktop in mission control, if I don't keep an eye on it I end up with like 10+ desktops. Another bug is when my computer sleeps, when I wake it up I have a load of ejection warnings for my external media, so I installed a app called Jettison which ejects my drives before sleep which also mutes my USB sound car upon wake. Another bug is that sometimes mail doesn't come through in the Mail.app, I just have to close it and reopen to make it "sync". The last bug that I can think of off the top of my head right now is that my desktop wallpaper kept changing from the custom one I'd put, it kept changing upon reboot, the fix for this oddly work, in Desktop & Screen Savers after you select the image you'd like, select the Solid colour category before closing Preferences.

2) Support for USB Microphones for FaceTime cellar calls, at the moment you can only use the Internal Microphone or Line In on hackintoshes.

3) The ability to be able to transfer calls from my iPhone to OS X - This is a serious over site of Continuity, there as been countless time where I've need to do this.

I've never really had a issue with the speed of Yosemite but if they can improve it I'm not complaining.

What I don't want to see -

1) I don't want them to go back to a Mavericks like design, people need to learn to move forward with the company.

2) I don't want them to make OS X more like iOS and even remove the dock - This is something I fear, OS X and iOS are two separate operating systems and it need to stay like that.

That's all I can think of at this stage, I'm falling asleep so my memory isn't doing me any favours.

I'll add as I think of more,

That's neither a wish for OS X 10.11, nor an understanding of people's criticisms of Yosemite.

I did not mean that as a wish for OS X 10.10. I mean it as a statement. I am saying people need to learn to move forward with companies when they change things. Companies are going to change a evolve overtime, they can't keep living with old designs. Lets face it if a company doesn't change their design in say 5 years, people would absolutely hammer them for not "moving forward" "living in the past" "Not updating their designs".

1. Glances for Mac in Notification Center (reworking of Widgets? replacing Widgets?)

2. One pane on Notification Center (merging Today and Notifications)

3. Granular controls for Do Not Disturb scheduling (weekend options, location-based options)

4. Dark theme extended to include window chrome (so a darker transparent top bar in Safari, for example)

5. Reading List section in Safari overhauled, integrating Safari Reader, better offline access

6. San Francisco from Apple Watch as the system-wide font

7. New Music app replaces iTunes

8. New Videos app replaces QuickTime/iTunes

9. New iSync app handles all iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch syncing

10. Improved Mail app with swipe gestures for quick actioning email - and PUSH email when the app is shut

11. Focus mode which blurs out the background behind all but the foremost app

12. Back/forward buttons joined up, other UI polish

This in addition to stability tweaks, speed boosts and bug fixes.
