My personal experience with the Extractor in a MacBook 4.1 early 2008 was frightening.
I did my best to follow the long list of instructions but not only it did not install Yosemite, which I was trying to do, but at a certain moment I thought the macbook was "finished", entirely out of order.
When the computer with my original old Lion seemed to boot and work again, i thanked God for it.
Never again will I touch the Extractor.
MCPF in my case doesn't offer Yosemite (for unknown reasons) but until Mavericks it works without causing me fear of ruining the old macbook.
Very probably my knowledge is not enough for using the Extractor...

Thank you very much RocksIRC for your kind post.
My question is the following:
Is this procedure only for MacPros 1.1, 2.1 or can it be used for any unsupported Mac???
I am trying to install in a MacBook 4.1 early 2008 and not in a MacPro!
Thank you in advance for kindly answering me

Maybe I missed this but has anyone gotten a recovery partition to work and what is the up with the damn finder freezing up all the time. I have to reboot a few times a day. I think Im going back to Yosemite. Just sux because I cant get final cut pro X to work. it locks up after I start it up as well. Sorry for the rant.

Mac pro 1,1 firmware flashed to 2,1. 8 core 2.8 ghzYes, my El Capitan Recovery partition works just fine, I do not experience Finder freezes, nor am I forced to reboot multiple times per day.
What Mac hardware are you running?
I used the pikiky createmedia to make the thumb drive. Thought that all I needed..Mac pro 1,1 firmware flashed to 2,1. 8 core 2.8 ghz
Gpu is evga gtx570 and the stock card 7600gt for boot up.

I wonder if this is the case with computers running other OS like Linux or Windows, as well?

Should I be entertaining hopes of El Capitan on it? I'm fairly confused as to what the actual status is for these little beasties.
Better install OSX 10.10 Yosemite on it:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/os-x-yosemite-on-unsupported-macs-guide.1761432/
OSX 10.11 El Capitan is due to the System Integrity Protection and the USB-issue quite complicated. You could try a transferred OSX 10.11 from a supported Mac with both Boot.efi replaced and the USB-Inject-All Kext installed.
Gotcha! Working through that thread now. Guess I have to hunt down 10.7 Lion!
It may be an idea to consider.
Only reasons I tried it with the MacBook are as follows: 1, parts are stupid cheap. 2, all MacBook models are interchangeable. If the body is relatively the same size, I'd give it a go.OSX 10.10 Yosemite as an good alternative - if you're familiar with the command-line and the Terminal-App then it also works from 10.6 Snow Leopard, see the Yosemite-Thread Post #2.
OSX 10.7 Lion is still available in the Apple Store.

Replacing the Logic-Board - that might work too for the MacBook Pro 2,x. The Logic-Board from the by OSX 10.11 El Capitan official still supported MacBook Pro 3,1 (Model A1226, mid 2007) might work too in the MacBook Pro 2,x (Model A1211, late 2006). I had considered this as OSX 10.10 Yosemite came out - but never tried. Maybe it's worth it if you have access to used MBPs and/or spare parts in very good conditions.

I'm looking for the easiest method to upgrade (not new install) to El Capitan from Mavericks.
iMac5,1 here.
Debating between Yosemite and El Capitan... Does 10.10 work better than 10.11?
Oh, so then I guess this thread is absolutely pointless. Thanks for your help.Neither since the iMac 5,1's ATI Radeon X1600 is unsupported.

Any progress on Macbook 3.1? I get stuck after booting into the Mac setup
