It does meet that sweet spot you mention, I’ve always avoided Otterbox as thought cases were always too bulky, this has been a pleasant surprise. I too got it for travelling and have no concerns.

It’s very stable as well, on par with the official folio.

Awesome - thanks!

Looks neat. Does that right flap get in the way at all? Does the front fold behind the back neatly or is it awkward? Less sharp edges than smart folio?

Glad to hear it - now, I’m really looking forward to getting mine tomorrow. As I’ve mentioned, I’m looking to this to be the case I use when I travel to give the iPad a bit more protection. On my previous Pro, I ran a keyboard case nearly all the time, but with he new 12.9, I’ve been playing around with an external keyboard and the Apple folio just be a bit more svelt. So, I’m hoping this new case will hit the sweetspot between svelt and protective!

How stable is the case in the position illustrated by your last picture? That’s the orientation my iPad resides in most of the time and I’m curious how this case holds up to screen taps and the like with the iPad more vertical.
I agree with Oreon, it is very stable indeed. Very happy with it!!!

I also am so happy that the apple pencil is so secure when you are mobile. you won't have the fear of it flying out

You mention traveling as a reason to purchase the OtterBox. That is wise I think. I'm anticipating air travel soon, and I'm guessing I'm going to have to make TSA happy by pulling my 12.9 out of any bag I have it in. iPads/tables used to be able to remain in a bag for screening, but I that isn't true anymore.

Wow, this looks great from the photos. I'm actually surprised Otterbox went with a slim design as their cases are usually known for protection, leading for the design to be big/bulky.

If/when my case I got off Amazon gets ruined, I'll give this a serious look.

I’ve had my case on for about an hour.

The only negative, and I think it’s unavoidable, is that there are so many cutouts along the short sides that the case doesn’t feel as tight there as my iPad Pro 9.7 symmetry case. The corners feel snug right now, and that’s what’s most important for protection. I really appreciate the flap to secure the pencil when I’m carrying my iPad about and I’m going to need to develop the habit of closing the flap whenever I’m on the move.

I’ve got my iPad in typing position now and the flap is bent back and providing an unobtrusive pencil rest.

It’s also very stable in the vertical position. I did a crossword puzzle with the pencil and there was no movement. I just switched to the vertical position to finish typing this post and if i bend the flap back it remains in that position until I remove the pencil.

This is a keeper. My apple folio is definitely going back.

I have the symmetry case on my iPad Pro 9.7 and that’s slimline also. Not designed for children or anybody who’ll toss around their iPad, or who work on a construction site, like the defender case. Perfect for someone who might accidentally drop their iPad once a year.

for those who are interested in getting the Smatree Case with this Otterbox case ...

You can't store it with the pencil attached to the otterbox case. I guess that's not a deal breaker for me. Now I feel that my iPad is well protected lol

Bought the Folio on release date with my new 12.9 Pro. As soon as I saw the Otterbox I made a run to the Apple store, returned the more expensive folio and got the Otterbox. Had the symmetry on my 2015 12.9 and loved the protection. The folio was beautiful but with this $1300 machine I’d rather be safe than sorry, and still have a stylish look.

Lovely case. Shame it’s on back order at the moment.

Do you guys who have the case don’t like the Smart Keyboard folio? I find the on screen keyboard very hard to use to type emails and any sort of word processing.

It folds back and sort of dangles. It doesn’t bother me at all and I’m usually one to get super annoyed if something blocks the screen or is in the way. The flap is not m

Went to the Apple Store to check it out. The material is different from the Apple folio, felt more "plastic". Got to see the folio too and felt it to be flimsy. Will wait until a better option comes.

Is yours the black cover? (starry night)? On apples website, only the light grey is showing up as available. The black is showing on Ottherbox’s website but is not yet available from them.

Just got mine and pretty much agree with everyone else - this will do nicely at putting my mind at ease while traveling. I’m surprised how thin everything still feels. I’ve had Otterbox cases for phones in the past and they always made the phones feel much larger. I’m not seeing that here.

And, the cut outs around the speakers do feel a little weak but, at least with the folios, there’s no protection on the sides, so, although flimsy feeling, the Symmetry does offer a bit more protection that Apple’s current offerings.

When you said "weak" about the speaker cut outs do you mean less protective, or sound gets lower? Thanks for the updates!

Sound is fine. The plastic/rubber that surrounds the cutouts is just not as snug to the iPad or as robust as the rest of the case - because there’s less material there, if that makes sense.

also with the cover/flap closed, that “thin” strip will be enough reinforcement/protection and thats what counts more anyway. the folio doesnt provide any side protection at all

Ordered. Couldn’t resist any longer after all the positive coo ents I’ll do a comparison review with the Apple folio. Apples and oranges I know ;)

Question: how hard is it to get in and out of the case if I want to slap on the Apple keyboard folio?

Not hard at all; pops in and out with little effort. In landscape, I start with the upper left and right corners (less material up there to flex with the pencil cut-out), then just pop it out. Takes a couple seconds.

Got mine yesterday. Pretty much agree with the others. The Apple folio edges seemed sharp to me, this one is more rounded. I love the flap to hold the pencil in place. I was paranoid I’d lose mine. The flap magnetically closes and when flipped back holds there too.

Negative- the sides are flimsy and when holding it horizontally on the sides, you can really tell. When the Smart Cover is closed, it doesn’t feel as flemsy. Wish they used a stronger plastic. It is slightly thicker then the Apple folio.

Overall I think I’m keeping it till a leather case comes out and has stronger sides.
