It's possible. But why would you want to? Not much software takes full advantage of an 8 core Mac anyway. What would you gain by overclocking it? Big deal if you fry a $400 PC. Do you really want to run the risk of frying a $3000 Mac?

That's exactly why you would do it, because not much software takes advantage of 8 cores. This will help speed up single-threaded applications.

I am VERY eagerly awaiting versions for the rest of the Intel Macs. My 2.33ghz iMac is itching to get pushed up a lot higher. I may drop some DDR2 800 RAM in it as well to ensure that RAM overclocks are not a limiting factor.

Which company's RAM is the best to use for overclocking the Mac Pro?

I was told that not all the RAM can be over-clocked. Which company's RAM provide the best performance and reliability? Please let us know the model number.

Can you return to default clock settings on MAC PRO 1.1?

Hi to all,

1. I am new to overclocking and was wondering if something went wrong on my Mac Pro 1,1 (first Gen.) 2.66 quad, 8 gb ram (2 apple, 6 crutial) ATI radeon X1900 512mb& Nvidia Gforce 256mb,
can I go back to its default settings?

2. Overclocking the computer, does this damage or shorten the life of the computer?

3. Is Crutial ram ok to use and with this software to overclock my processor to 3.0 ghz?

4. will there be heating issues, my Mac now is quiet and not too hot?

5. Does Overclocking void Apple Care?

Thanks for your help guys!
Cheers,
Alessandro

1. I am new to overclocking and was wondering if something went wrong...can I go back to its default settings?

Yes. Just turn your Mac Pro off and back on. This will reset it to the default speeds.

2. Overclocking the computer, does this damage or shorten the life of the computer?

Using this method, not really. The components themselves all have some amount of headroom and will not work if pushed too far beyond that headroom. So you can't really push them so hard as to damage them.

3. Is Crutial ram ok to use and with this software to overclock my processor to 3.0 ghz?

Crucial is top-quality RAM, so it should have headroom.

4. will there be heating issues, my Mac now is quiet and not too hot?

It will run warmer, but it depends on how much of an overclock your system will support. The higher the overclock, the more heat generated.

5. Does Overclocking void Apple Care?

Yes, but they likely can't prove you were overclocking the machine (I don't believe the system keeps a record of the CPU, FSB and memory speeds). So if you do suffer an issue - whether or not it is directly related to overclocking your machine - chances should be good that you would still get warranty coverage.

My Mac Pro 1,1 2.66 Ghz doesn't overclock

I tried this software at different speeds : 2.7, 2.8, and 3.1 and every time I restart the computer the light flashes 3 times, then I have a pause.

1.Is anybody having this problem on the 1st generation Mac Pro?

2. Am I Overclocking the computer properly? I install program, change the OC and then restart the computer

Thanks,
Alessandro

Where does the Overclocking show?

Does the Overclocking show in: apple, about this mac?
How do you know if the overclocking worked?
Thanks Again

My 2.8 GHz 8core worked with 3.4 GHz. In Cinema 4D the ~20% speed increase is notable, and measuring with a stopwatch confirmed it. The rendering time went from about one minute to slightly under 50 seconds...

But I didn't restart the machine or tested the settings for a long time. As long as my mac is faster than me I dont see any necessity to overclock it. In e few years perhaps...

A cool tool to play with.

BTW: my memory consists of the 2 original Apple Gigs plus a pair of 1GB- Kingston sticks (KTA-MP800 2G or something similar).

Any chance that further versions of this utility could boost voltage as well? I know there are risks involved, but some of us are willing to take them.

Why wonder when you can find out?!

Just try to sue me when you burn your monster out. You aren't using its full power now anyway. I don't care who you are. No one on Earth is currently maxing out their Mac Pro.

*waits happily to be proven wrong*

My cousin worked at this place where a guy made a heart simulation to test the effects of drugs. They originally tried it on an 8-core, 3.2GHz Mac Pro, but it wasn't enough, so they moved it to a small supercomputer.

I don't overclocking would have helped much there.

I've been running my 2.8GHz Mac Pro at 3GHz for about 24 hours with absolutely zero problems. Temps for the cores and RAM are about the same as always. I'll keep running it at these levels for a while before attempting to overclock further. Thanks!

BTW, my RAM config is:
2 x Apple OEM 1GB sticks
6 x A-Data 2GB sticks

Any workarounds or fixes found for the MP v1.1 machines yet?

Still no reboot here. And without a warm boot to resync things up to the new bus speed the whole system runs wonky. Tunes are messed, some video doesn't play right, games freak out, and of course the MP becomes a time machine traveling into the future without a pilot or navigator. :)

Any chance this will work with nMP? Looking to getting better single core performance than '13 iMacs..such a shame xeons are a gen behind.

A gen behind doesn't necessarily mean lower performance. It depends on many factors including the apps you use and the improvements the developer might added to the apps to harness the technologies of the new machines.

Regarding CPU overclocking, usually if it's just an increment of .2 to .5 GHz, you'll not encounter many problem, it's only when you start doing a +1 GHz that you'll have to be extra careful with the thermals and etc.

Always increment it slow and small and over the time increase it :)

Yes sure, in version 1.0 we decided to support Mac Pros at first for several reasons:

  • They have an outstanding cooling system. Try smcFanControl to listen to the maximum speed of your fans.
  • All Mac Pros have similar clock chips. This is unfortunately not the case for MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis. -> more work for me

However, we plan to release newer versions, which support more Macintoshs.

OK, well, guess I'll just sit here and wait for that magic day! *twiddling thumbs*
[doublepost=1526696122][/doublepost]maybe a bsel mod works on these 771 socket xeons? Anyone tried it? 1333 fsb to 1600? Doesn't appear to be much OC software out there for our beloved MacPros, unfortunately.

Dual booted back to Lion (for overclocking obviously) on my 2,1 macpro, ran ZDnet and now at 1600 FSB. Played Race Driver Grid, no freeze ups or lags..insanely fast frame rates actually. tTemps appearing with Macs Fan control showing CPU's at 46C & 47C. Drive Bays at 29C, FBM risers at 35C & 36C. PS at 48C and adjusted to 700 rpm. Hard drives at 33C. Verry cool over here!
