Finally! Found a non-Wholesale and U.S.-based company that sells the Ozaki cases. I sent an email asking about the sleep/wake function as it seems that some people have had issues with it on the new iPad (apparently no problems with the iPad 2) and have been returning them. I'll post what I hear back from them.

Have anybody buy from this site. The prices seems to be very low compared to other stores, including Amazon's.

Thanks

I bought from them and my order should be arriving in just a matter of days. So far, everything has been great. I like the fact that they've been responsive and keep me informed of my order status. I'll post a review and photos when my case arrives.

Received my slim fit Y yesterday. I really like it, very easy to use, stable in all of the positions. seems to be well made. A little pricey, but all in all I really dig it.

My case finally arrived and the sleep/wake function works with my iPad (3rd generation). I apologise in advance for the blurry photos but I took it with my mobile camera.

It's got a nice feel and I like how thin it is yet has good protection for my needs (i.e., covers all corners). Mine is the art deco (light blue) and the inside (although difficult to see in the photo) is a darker blue with darker turquoise.

As for the vendor, I was hesitant as I had never heard of igearguys.com and was concerned they might send me a case where the sleep/wake function did not work. They exceeded my expectations! When I emailed them about the potential sleep/wake function issue, they checked with the manufacturer and (Russ) got back to me straight away. They held my order and made sure to send one that worked. Brilliant! I'm going to order another one :) (for my sister-in-law).

How did everyone order from igearguys.com? Their website says all models are out of stock.

Received my slim fit Y yesterday. I really like it, very easy to use, stable in all of the positions. seems to be well made. A little pricey, but all in all I really dig it.

I just pre ordered the y++ in black from igearguy site. They finally updated the site so that I could back order it. The reason I went with the deluxe y++ is that all indications are that it is made of real leather. They have a black in y+ and y++ and don't distinguish the differences between the models but another site I found calls the y++ as having real leather. I sent an email to the ozaki website to ask them the differences and to verify that the y++ is real leather. Who knows how long to will take for the y++ to be in stock though as that model hasn't been released yet it seems.

If this proves to be true when I get their email then...
Y doesn't come with stylus
Y+ comes with stylus
Y++ comes with stylus and real leather but limited colors

LOL I hate this site. Who would've known it would have been harder to pick a case than the type of iPad you want...Ugh each thread makes me want a different thing! This product looks amazing. Wish I could just go into a store and mess with it...

That is sooooo true.... And why I have a smart cover with Tucson back, yoobao executive, and now the y++ when it is released. A some point I just stop caring about what is new and hopefully this is the last case for me. The folding design in this case is very innovative. I usually only prefer leather all around but I am making an exception for this case which does have some plastic on the outside.

I got a reply back from Ozaki

"Hi,
*
Thanks for your inquiry.
*
iCoat Slim Y Serial (IC501 IC502 IC504) are all leather cases but the different leather.
*
iCoat Slim Y ++ is a very high end leather (seems like famous brand) and iCoat Slim Y + comes with elegant leather with 7 different patterns
*
Best regards,
OZAKI"

Good to hear, just ordered 2 ozaki cases from the igearguys (the price is too good to pass up compared to the 3rd party seller @ amazon and casedepot). Protected by paypal anyway so there's really nothing to lose. Ordered the black y++ for myself and the modernism for the wife. Was going for the joy smart suit 3 myself but this folding thing really is useful for different orientations....hopefully that video review is true in saying the only thing really wrong with this case is that the flaps don't hold when you have the ipad upside down....which I don't really see most people doing neway.

How bright is that blue? Do you mind posting more pics? :)

This is pretty hard to describe. But when you fold the flap back like a smart cover, put it in typing mode, then "flip it up" into portrait mode, is that edge of the iPad covered, or is it touching the surface directly? I guess if you compare it to a book...the edge of the iPad that is nearest the "binding" of the book. Sorry, really lazy to take a picture and point, hahaha. Studying for finals...

Hong Kong update:

I bought the IC501 in black today. That's the one without pen, but it still has a pen holder which you can attach if you like.

I bought it in Hong Kong, Sincere Bldg. 2/F on Argyle St., Mongkok. IC501 (without pen) was HK$398 (US$51) (paid only 390 since their EPS didn't work and that was all the cash I had )

The case with the pen is HK$498 in Sincere Bldg.

BTW, I asked the shop to have it tested, which they agreed to a bit reluctantly, the wake up works flawless.

Only regret is that I bought the iPad3 just recently and bought it with the Apple cover thingy for HK$298 which is now obsolete.

Update: When you turn the iPad3 LCD down the cover will come off and the iPad will switch on. That ain't good. After some checking on the cover-comes-off-by-gravity issue I noticed that the rights side (home button side is left) holds better and the home button side does not hold at all. Looks to me like the magnets on the left are in the wrong polarity.

I advise you guys not buy online and really test them! They seem to have many issues circulating.

What happened to the video review? I can't find the link in this thread anymore.

I was hoping the cover was magnetically attached to the screen. That is one of the reasons I purchased a newer version of the yoobao executive case which does have magnets to keep the cover attached. I am beginning to second guess the purchase now. I don't want the cover flapping back and forth turning on the ipad when I am walking with it. Can someone with this case test it while walking with it in their hand with it on their side in all orientations to see if that is an issue? A video would be helpful with a little more emphasis on how easy the cover comes off.

Video keeps getting removed probably since it's against forum rules for affiliates and sorts. But interesting observation regarding the magnet polarity thing being the reason that the flaps don't hold....it's not a deal killer to me either way since from the video review, it doesn't really come apart unless you hang the thing upside down....I don't think it's something that easily flaps off when you're just walking around right? Maybe the owners can shed some light.

I don't want the cover flapping back and forth turning on the ipad when I am walking with it.

Mine does exactly that.:(

I did some research into the issue.

iPad3.jpg - The magnetic N of the iPad3

cover_ori.jpg - The magnetic N of the original Apple smart cover

cover_slim.jpg - The magnetic N of the Slim-Y

cover_2.jpg - The Slim-Y will not hold face down.

gap.jpg - on the left side the cover will float over the LCD probably due to wrong magnet polarity.

Interestingly, the Apple cover has nothing magnetic in the corners. The Slim-Y has a magnetic N, at one corner spot were the iPad has a weak N (iPad right, not marked) - it should have a S there.

I think they got a bit mixed up with the left/right/up/down/issues.

(Update: I called the importer today and explained the problem. They said 'no problem to change for me'. I will try to go there this afternoon and let you know.)

Let us know how it goes. I will be placing an order for the white version, but I can't get a supplier that will check this for me. What I would like to know is where I can buy one of these cases from that will make sure they are sending me a good case, and not one that is defective.

I'll be reporting back on this issue after I receive my first ozaki case. Ordered a Y+ and a Y++ from igearguys and the Y+ has shipped already. Hopefully I won't run into these type of issues but it's a good thing these igearguys seem to offer a full $$ back guarantee.

EDIT: Fast shipping, ordered on Sunday, shipped out on Monday and got to me today via fedex....seems like they distribute out of CA or have a distribution center in CA. Will be testing it out when I get home to see about these issues.

I've attached a couple of more photos. Sorry for the rubbish photos - I took them with my laptop camera. The simplest way I'd describe it is a bright sky blue. I tried thinking of an American sports team colour that might help and the one I thought came the closest was the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. And compared to the university's colour, I'd say the case is still a brighter sky/light blue than theirs. So basically, a tad lighter than my photos and a tad darker than Chapel Hill. However, the inside (as described in my earlier post) consists of a darker turquoise colour. Hope that makes sense :-D.

Thanks. I just cancelled my order. That is a deal breaker for me. I expected the edges to be magnetically held to the ipad at least a little bit. If that one thing gets fixed in the future I will end up ordering one again. Everything else about the case I like except the cutout where the stylus holder is at. I don't use a stylus so I would rather it be completely flat there instead of a bump/cutout for the stylus. I would prefer the stylus attached to the edge or on top of the cover magnetically.

So, is the cover held in place by the magnets? Also, you said you ordered a y+ (one of the plain colors) Did you get that in yet? If so, how does it look? I plan on ordering from the same place, but didn't want to unless they worked. I had emailed them, and asked if they could check the case before sending it, and all the reply said was it isn't in stock, and it would be a week to two weeks before it would ship. (this is the y+ in all white). Just trying to figure out if this is a problem they have fixed yet, or if I need to hold off for a while.

At work with no ipad but opened the Y+ modernism from igearguys (quick service)....1st impressions:

1) Sturdy case, very solid front and back.
2) The folding is simple and intuitive, and very sturdy when folded.
3) Of course, you have all the functions of a smart cover as well.....
4) Wife loves the pink, it's a good baby pink instead of a hot pink like most of the stuff out now.
5) Stylus is comfortable and doesn't distract from the case not laying down flat like I was worrying....it's just ever so slightly elevated on a table.

Now the real test comes when I get home and try out the fitment and this thing about the magnets. I hope they got it right since on the cover, they clearly say that this is for the new ipad (3rd generation) and ipad 2. Stay tuned.

Feedback: testing other Ozaki Slim-Y cases didn't help much. The fault seems serial.

In technical terms: The corner magnets are not strong enough (the iPad 3) has only some iron material in the corners and would need stronger magnets.

A lift off in the corner has a lever effect on the center magnets, making them fail too.

A bit of engineering thinking let me come up with a perfectly working workaround.... thin iron sheet material on two points near the edges (outside the LCD view area). Not perfect beauty, but works perfectly now. Although, I will need some high quality no-residue tape, preferably black in color. The brave person can of course put it under the glass.

Well I just got home and put the iPad in. Here are my thoughts:

1) Fitment is very good, snapped right in and is nice and snug. No play and not too tight.
2) iPad is well protected I think all the way around from the case....minus the speaker grill (we all know this), since it's a complete cut out versus having a grill with small holes....but IMO, more than enough protection for the normal wear and tear putting the iPad on tables etc.
3) Locking/unlocking (sleep/wake) the iPad works as advertised, either you roll up the cover (ala smartcover method) or fold it like the origami method....it wakes up just fine and like wise goes to sleep when you close the cover. I found that this is only activated from the upper right side anyway (assume home button is the bottom in a portrait orientation). The bottom triangular flap doesn't do anything to the sleep/wake function.

Now here's the main thing everyone's worried about:

1) The top flap (the upper right side that actually activates the sleep/wake function) seems to hold ok IMO. It's not the strongest magnet but it does NOT come lose from simply hanging the iPad upside down. You'd have to shake it yourself to let it flap open.
2) The bottom flap (the lower right side) is completely loose. I believe flameproof got it right that the polarity of the magnet here is reversed. This would explain it not sticking at all and when laying flat, you can notice a small float as that part doesn't lay down completely.

I will contact igearguys and see if they are planning to swap the case when it gets fixed....but buy no means is this a deal breaker imo. Even when you're walking about, if you're holding the ipad by grabbing the flaps, there's no way they would slide open.....and likewise when you put it inside some bag with something against it. These are my observations so far, very nice case and well thought out, the only thing is that lower right hand side magnet. I'm assuming they haven't shipped my y++ since it's probably not released yet.
