They're not bad but the fact the placement changes sucks. I probably won't upgrade.

The jailbraking community is forcing us to add ads on our apps in order to get some money.

Yeah i downloaded a crack for a free app, cmon Pika....
this was a free app in the first place. they added ads after the game has been out for over a month.

Pika see your apps are not protected by Kali......

Blocking admob at DNS level makes for a perfect looking game

Luckily I have the olde version on my back up iphone. I deleted version 1.2 from the 3Gs and itunes then resynced my old iphone.

back to ad free play minus the airport level. oh well.

World toss is a lot harder and a lot of fun.
Well worth the 99 centsplus tax.
OMG a jailbreaker bought an app.... did I just break the jailbrreaking creed?

God forbid the developers make any money for their hard work. It costs money to develop the app, to host the high scores, to bring out updates. The ads aren't intrusive. Nothing in the world is free, and the app store is no different.

Then maybe the developer should charge for their app? I'd gladly pay the 99 cents to have an ad free game and I'm sure most others would as well.

I have no problem paying for apps that are worth it but will delete 9 out of 10 free apps with ads.

99 cents for this app is perfectly fine. For me, gaming on my phone is really a time passer while I wait for something so I don't really care one way or the other.

iTunes will force you to upgrade anyways.

iTunes doesn't force you to upgrade. The App Store will have it as something that can be upgraded, but you can just ignore it.

I don't use Paper Toss, but I don't what the big deal is about ads. It's a way for the developers to make some money, so I don't have a problem with them. I guess if the ad is getting in the way of the app, then that would be a complaint, but I would think they'd fix that if it's keeping people from DLing the app.

Aside from the $99 iphone dev fee how much does it costs to develop an app for hobbyist developers(which most here are)?

Most programming references are available online for free, even from Apple itself.

It costs Nothing. It takes time, that I don't dispute, but most of these people have day jobs and develop for fun at night.

hosting high scores costs pennies a day.

The problem with that is, developers don't get any money from the users that pirate their paid apps. So, if a developer makes a free version with ads, and a paid version without, guess which version is going to get used by the pirates. The paid version, that they stole.

You have the $99 developer fee, the cost of the device to program on (the Mac) and the devices to test on (the iPhones and iPod Touches.) You also have to buy your domain and hosting, which can easily equate to $200 a year for larger developers that need the extra bandwidth and SQL databases. There is the cost for additional learning materials such as books. If the developer chooses to attend a conference such as WWDC they can expect to pay $1000 for the week, after lodging and food. Even weekend conferences can push to $750 and beyond.

Some developers are paying for graphics, which isn't cheap. And others have partners that they have to split profits with. There is an old saying "Time is money." The going rate for a software engineer is well over $50/hr. Sure, if you are doing this as a side job then you won't be making that kind of money, but the developer should still receive compensation for their time. A simple app takes about a week to develop start to finish. That is only a simple app, imagine how long the more complex apps must take to be created.

Cry me a river.

Take that argument up with Apple, it's their responsibility to make a more hack proof DRM that they can enforce.

Don't force users to have an ad driven app, when a paid version could be an option.

+1 Very well said.

That way, the jailbraking community will have no choice but to deal with our ads unless they modify our original source code.

People who think app development costs no money are not thinking outside the box AT ALL.

Building software often costs more than building a house. Time is money. People cost a great deal of money, the dev program even costs some money.

Many of our apps are released as a free version with ads and a paid version for 99 cents with no ads. It's almost a 20:1 ratio of people opting for the ad-supported versions of the apps.

The reason people want to make money from the apps they develop is the same as the reason they want to make money from mowing lawns, selling cars, attending board meetings, engineering or whatever they do to earn a living...

I agree.
how much does the developer make on these ads?
What about if the ads are advertising their own product?

I would gladly pay a buck or two for an app that is ad free..

I read a lot of developers stating the jailbreakers are robbing them. Wait a second here, then why are the developers coming up with software to protect their work? something like Kali for instance. You know RIP dev, they the evil former jailbreak kings now turn good guy offer Kali to protect developers work from piracy. Why not use that to beat the thieving jailbreaking thugs from stealing your work?

They mainly make money on ad clicks, just general impressions (loading an ad) don't make much money at all.

When it comes to advertising their own product, if they need money so badly I doubt they would be purchasing ads, that costs a decent amount of money :p If they chose to advertise their own product in one of their products, they could advertise on their own and just put an image or link in the app without having to go through an advertising company.

That's why this is surprising. When Paper Toss came out, the only mention of another app was the same firm's other app, Ragdoll Blaster and that quickly shot up the charts. I think ads for the same developer's apps (either a premium version of the free app, or another app altogether) are likely to do well, as obviously, the user has an idea of the developer's quality and might be willing to support that developer. But the AdMob ads seem to do one thing... make money for AdMob.

I read something not that long ago that some devs make more from the free apps with ads than their 99 cent ones.

I prefer no ads - especially for the stuff i let the kids play. Even if they don't have wifi turned on (it won't stay on on my touch anyway), i still don't like them clicking.

I won't be updating paper toss, my newly turned 5yo daughter loves to play and she loves to click other stuff. Drives me bonkers. I have a few free apps that are worth buying - guess i should take the time to let the devs know.

Except, the whole thing above with them making more money with the ads.

You know, if you spent as much time on anti-piracy for your app as you do whining and crying about pirates, you could really throw them off.

Do yourself (and us) a favor and pick a hobby that you aren't a crybaby at when things don't go your way.
