Microsoft's insiders versions all have a drop dead date and nobody has a clue if they are going to allow licensing to individuals for WOA, so yes, there's a risk -- but you will have the use of it until such time as things change. I wouldn't purchase a license for a Win Pro though unless you're serious about using it!

Is there any risk that (assuming i get window pro) that microsoft eventually decides not to develope an official windows arm AND removes access for all existing insider previews?

I'm somewhat ok if they decide to never develop an official version, but wouldn't want to get a new M1 mac with parallels only to find in a year or two that i can't use even old versions of windows ARM.
Windows on ARM probably isn't at risk since Microsoft seem pretty committed to the platform, doubtless doubly so now they've seen what Apple has achieved. What Microsoft might end up doing is only providing Windows on ARM with devices (i.e. they won't provide an ISO image for people to download and install into Virtual Machines). To me this feels unlikely (but I'm as good at calling it wrong as the next man).

Just a bit of straightforward help, please. I'm about to buy a copy of Parallels 16.5 for my M1. I'm assuming the install is to download the program, invoke it, and it self installs. Where exactly do I find the Windoze file I need, what is the name of the file, and what is involved in installing it under Parallels. Am I going to have to go looking for additional files, is it a straightforward install, are the directions written in plain English?
Thanks for any help.

Its a download to be found at Microsoft. You need to be member of Microsofts Windows Insider program to be able to download it

Note:
- Anybody can sign up for the Insider Program
- Once you have installed you need to change the channel from the Beta Preview to Developer to get the latest builds supporting a broader range of Intel applications
Uh, forgive my ignorance, but how do you change the channel? I didn't see an indicator for that???

Should be under Settings / Updates & Security / Windows Insider Program.

Also again for anyone that’s concerned about licensing- Yes, it is correct that Microsoft does not provide a direct way to Purchase a license for Windows on Arm. Whether that changes in the future is obviously up to Microsoft. But, I’m currently using a License for Windows 10 Pro that I purchased years ago. Like maybe 3 years ago now? I had found a deal for two licenses so I got one for my old Bootcamp partition and one for a VM. Now that Bootcamp isn’t an option and the VM I have is an x86_x64 build and not Arm, both of those Licenses have been freed up for me.

Since we can’t ASSUME anything with Microsoft’s plans or intentions here, no one in any of these forums can accurately say it WILL work forever. But for now it IS working just fine. Yes, these Insider Preview builds “expire” just like a developer or public beta of iOS or iPadOS will expire. But I’ve also ran Windows Preview Builds in the past for a few years without a license at all. You’re more limited with the customization at that point. I’ve found that the slowest Dev Channel tends to be mainly bug free. As far as the showstopper type of bugs. But YMMV…

I have actually entered my Pro license ready for future release.

So I am waiting for M1 16 in MBP and need to use VM Parallel for few programs. So are you guys saying that they won’t have this figured out by the time the 16 is released? Can I get Parallel and Windows by time it is released or will I have to go the hoops of Microsoft developer and hope and maybe???? Trying to realistically figure if I do not need to stick with MBP intel

Only Microsoft knows and they aren’t talking.

Remote Desktop to a cheap windows PC you have or can get. If not try see if it runs under Windows ARM with emulation

Quick question, if I get Parallels as a subscription, what happens if I stop the sub after 12 months? Can I keep using the product but won't get any updates?

My understanding is that you will not be able to keep using it after stopping the sub.

I have just switched to subscription from annual purchase of update, because I always purchased anyway, so ended up paying the same, without getting the more capable subscription version.

If you're currently running a subscription of Parallels and then cancel after a year, the license in use will stop working and prevent you from running Parallels. You would need to purchase it outright in order to continue using that version without the option to upgrade unless you pay again.

… so infinite usage = infinite price of Parallels ….!

Well, that's assuming you're always going to upgrade to the most current version. I went two (I think?) years without updating Parallels a few years ago, but then needed to because of OS updates and various other reasons.. The subscription price is basically the same as upgrading every year, and that's fine with me because I've noticed the performance improvements they generally talk up. Although this coming year my decision to upgrade will rest solely on how Microsoft ends up responding to Apple's M1 and the lack of BootCamp. I might have to go the "headless Windows PC in the corner" route and just use RDP.

I'm actually building the NAS I have on my to-do list for a long time now. Except I'm basing it on Proxmox and I'll have a Windows VM next to the file server/cloud/... NAS VM. It's pretty easy to do. I only upgraded my RAM requirement from 16GB to 32GB. Another €100 and the "M1 doesn't do Windows VMs" problem has been solved. To access it from anywhere, I'll use DDNS. With thanks to a colleague who's already doing this for some time.

You might want to put it behind a VPN, the script kiddies just love attacking open RDP connections, so there will be increased traffic. That's what I do now for both home and work.

The only problem with the idea of RDP is internet latency, if you can stand that it'll be slower when working remotely, it's definitely a workable way to do it.

Good tip, I'll look into setting up a VPN for the Windows VM then. As for RDP, ah well. There's also TeamViewer and the like. I'll play around with a few and see what sticks.
