Have a read here to understand more about TRIM, apple and Yosemite. http://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/

The short answer I think is Apple forced TRIM to only run on their SSD drives in Yosemite.

Thank you. I have to admit I'm very disappointed with Apple's strict "security" measure. We all know this is to ensure that people buy their upgrades from Apple so that they can pad their bottom line. After reading that article, what are the odds that the grey stop sign will show up? I get the sense that it may or may not show up. I was thinking of buying the mid-range Mac Mini and then manually install the Samsung 840 EVO SSD. I might not go through with that if I have to deal with all of these hacks to get things working and even then it may not work 100% correctly. It's not like I don't have the skills to do it. It's just that I feel like I'm working with cracked software and then the next update will break the software. For reasons that I don't understand, Apple is restricting the 512GB SSD and higher to the high end Mac Mini. Wtf? This should be an option for the mid-range Mac Mini as well!

Yes, this is really more the problem than anything else. and once you purchase you can't buy a apple ssd as an aftermarket upgrade...

sometimes needs change since you first bought the equipment!

if Apple is going to make it problematic to add a SSD they should at the very least start selling SSD upgrades post purchase...!

I just read that Apple disable TRIM on non-authorized SSDs. First time I've heard of anything like this. Will I get TRIM if I were to buy a 2.5" SSD or any third party PCIe SSDs for the 2014 Mac Mini? If I can't get TRIM, then that's a bit of a dealbreaker.

no it just means you can't do any internal installs use your thunderbolt 2 as your booter. then once a month clean up the ssd. while you use the internal spinner as the boot drive.

I can't begin to tell you what I think of Apple at this moment in time.
I would be banned from this site.

I can tell you this they are forcing the desktop users into thunderbolt 2 externals. Look at the entire 2014 lineup. What is the biggest internal setup you can buy? imac's 3tb fusion.

This means use the cloud or use externals. Get used to it.

Exactly Right. No more double drives and no more replaceable ram. Apple dictates whats good for us. Baaaah Baaaah.

Less than half correct. Double drives are still possible: one PCIe and the other SATA. Still have to wait and see what if any companies parts available, just like previous versions. Apple has always dictated what it wants consumers to do to some degree, it comes and it goes, nothing new.

All proprietary and overpriced. Fusion is the only option for double drive. No Raid options internal.

It this is what you call slow (Apple 1TB and 512GB Blade SSD's). By eliminating the SATA III Chipset Controller/Interface and slow 6 Gigabit bus, PCIe SSD's deliver one heck of an increase over SATA SSD's.

the pcie drives are slow actually really slow in the most critical spot 4k reads

if you do t-bolt externally your 4k reads will be quicker which is what you want for a booter.

... On eBay, Apple/Samsung SSD's are cheaper in most instances that the equivalent Samsung M.2 SSD.

The problem is sourcing the PCIe cable/adapter... I'm thinking it'll be easier to get a 256gb PCIe for the same price as the fusion and then buying the easily sourced 2012 SATA cable as this looks almost the same as the 2012 cable and putting in a 2TB spinner...

this exactly is thing to curse apple over, not that soldered ram gate.

I said 4k random reads are slow.

which is the single most important number for a booter. And those fast pcies do under 25mb as I read your chart and that is slow.

and I attached a shot of my 1tb samsung in an external thunder bolt one lacie little big disk. my 4k read is 23mbs vs your 24mbs. which for booting is just about the same. except mine can move from mini to mini to mini to mini and mine was 400 bucks and the case was 169 cost 569 for basicaly equal 4k read speeds. if you wait I will test my internal 750gb samsung on a different mini
