The GTS250 is yet another rebadged G92, but nonetheless it is nice that Netkas package allows it too to work.

Interestingly, the Nvidia "helper" card can NOT be another G92 EFI card, causes a no boot scene.

By using a G70 helper I got it to boot.

The GTS250 is QUITE a bit faster than 8800GT, if only someone really clever would help me on the Nvidia EFI ROM sewing project...........

I have tried countless times to get my EVGA GTS 250 512mb to work with 10.5.7 (iDeneb) and haven't gotten it to work.

This (http://aquamac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=osx86driversandkexts&action=display&thread=838) finally worked for me, but without Quartz Extreme. Now I can't even use to that method anymore, I get the "Please restart your computer" screen over and over.

Can you please tell me how you got your GTS250 to work with Leopard?

Since I am on a "Real" Mac Pro, there are likely different rules.

I have noticed that G92 cards can't use another G92 card as a helper card.

Needs to be a G70.

Gtx 295

Weirdness.

The 7300GT I ordered has arrived and it works fine in slot 3 of my machine, in regards to booting the GTX285.

It functions just like the Quadro 4500 in that you need to briefly run display from 7300 and then the GTX285, otherwise it is "Second Display".

As far as why this works for me and not SPEEDTOY, I put forth the following :

1. Mac Pro 1,1 vs 2,1...somehow the slots/addressing changed a touch?

2. ROM revision of 7300GT. Mine shows 3008. I opened up the 7300GT FIrmware Update. It appears to be updating Rev 3004 to Rev. 3007. So it seems that there are 3 possible ROM revisions for 7300GT. Perhaps 3008 is needed for proper behavior?

3. Slot 1 needs to be @ 16 Lanes and Slot 3 needs to be @4? Give it a whirl....

Good news is it seems that for Mac Pro 1,1 it is possible to run a GTX285 in conjunction with a 7300GT (most came with these already). Again, this requires Netkas find injector package and the drivers, but NO Flashing or soldering. And since the 7300 requires no additional power, there are enough plugs available to use cards like this.

EDIT: FIGURED IT OUT !!! I did the reverse of my Number 3 above, I set my Slot 3 to 1 lane instead of 4. On next reboot I got a Grey Boot from 7300 which went into kernal panic. So, apparently the second Nvidia card with EFI needs to be @ 4 lanes minimum for Netkas trick to work. All Dlary needs to do is use Expansion Slot Utility to set Slot 1 @ 16 and Slot 3 @ $ lanes. Then the 7300GT will work from slot 3 and the GTX 285 will work in slot 1.

Rominator,

Thanks for testing all of this out. I have an early Mac Pro with a 7300GT and was almost forced into buying an older card before finding this post. My question for you is whether or not you think it's possible for your same solution to work with the EVGA 017-P3-1295-AR CO-OP Edition GeForce GTX 295 1792MB 896 card.

I figured there's no reason to stop at the 285 if you think this will work. Otherwise I'll go with the card you recommend.

Also, do you know of a good place to order the power adapter plug for the 285/295 since my 7300GT doesn't have a power cable going to it?

I'd be happy to test this out on a real first gen mac pro if there is high hopes. Then the wiki can be updated for all of us early adopters that apple hates.

Thanks!

I think someone named Mroy posted about the GTX295. Have a read of that, though he was on a Hackintosh so YMMV.

Yeah I read through every post and I was excited to see he had it working until I realized he wasn't using a Mac Pro at all. It would be great to take advantage of the latest PC card in my first gen Mac Pro so I think I'll give it a shot. It makes me a bit nervous but I guess I could always return the card if I buy it somewhere reliable.

Thanks

Apart from the power supply issue (do these cards still need 8-pin supply?) my guess is 295 will be OK on proper Pro. Might need PCI ID fiddling or memory setting though, and we still do not know why peskaa's 275 is not going. Slightly expensive experiment!

I cannot resist posting this shot. nbody running under both CUDA and openCL together. one on each of a Mac 285 and injected PC 2G 285. It's a measure of just how good netkas' injector is!

Well. Almost everything is working perfectly. I have the 295 in my First Gen Mac Pro (1,1) with the 7300GT helper card. The one issue I'm having is when booting up into Snow Leopard (drivers were pre-installed) and the display attached to the 295 it comes up acting like a second display. If I remove the plug and put it in the 7300GT it shows up fine. I can then take it and put it BACK into the 295 and voila! It works.

Is there a solution around this crappy workaround?

Also, what is a good app to test out benchmarks?

Thanks!

I do not know what is happening with the monitors, but you could try

(a) OpenGL Extensions Viewer and run the benchmarks - if you look at the threads on these cards there are examples of settings

(b) If you can get CUDA up you can find out how many GFlops you can get in the nbody simulation, or look at the output of MonteCarlomultiGPU.

Games fans could tell you how to do WoW frame sums - I do not have a clue.

I am very impressed you have this up in Pro - thanks for doing the experiment.

I reported this EXACT behavior, should not be a shock. Read my posts on this.

Could someone please post step by step instructions (or a link) on how to get PC GTX 285 working on Mac Pro running Snow Leopard? (The software part).

So far I only figured that I need the injectors, so I got them from here and installed them, but when I replaced the card the screen was still black. So I guess it's not so easy.

GTX295 and GT120 in Mac Pro 4.1, needs some tweaking.

Hello all,

I am a recent PC to Mac transfer guy who has been reading quite a bit modding the GPU on a Mac Pro. I have read all of Meroy's posts regarding the subject and used his directives from. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=147149&view=findpost&p=1256652

I added the netkas most recent enabler and installed the cards. This was done on the SL install partition, I did not make a new one. When I check the system info, I see 1 GT120 and GTX 295 (They are in slot 1 and 2 respectively). This is what I see from the connected GTX295NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x05eb
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: netkas.org
Displays:
DELL 3007WFP:
Resolution: 2560 x 1600
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Rotation: Supported
Display Connector:
Status: No Display Connected

As you can see the VRAM is still at 512. I understand from the above linked thread that I need to change the VRAM value, but I can not find the .plist file for this. Nor can I find the boot.plist file.

I have installed kext helper b7, IOregistryexplorer, I have Ralph's 295 set (although I am not sure how to use it since it seems to be written for PC not OSX install) , PlistEdit Pro, and gfxutil. For Gfxutil, I have been unable to determine what my gfx.plist is since I keep getting (Do I need to put this in a certain directory)

Home:~ go$ gfxutil -f Display
-bash: gfxutil: command not found
Home:~ go$

BTW IORegistryExplorer tells me that the displays are NVDA for Display A@0 and B@1.

I hope this is enough info to get some help from all the guru's out there.

Thanks again,

Partsie.

Card is a eVGA GTX 295 Co-Op edition on a Mac Pro 4.1 base quad core model with 6G of RAM

What brand and model of 295 do you have working? Link would be great. Also, if you can update http://macprogpu.wikidot.com/cards it would be muchly appreciated for those of us researching this. I need to update my MacPro 1,1 and the 295 would be great.

Thanks!

What happens if you have two monitors, one on the 7300 and one on the 285? Do you have to adjust cables to boot then?

Thanks for all of the research, makes it easier for us n00bs :)

I took the plunge and purchased an EVGA 295gtx and with all of the posts in this threads help, I have it working!

Since this is an older thread and buried, I started a new thread with my results and details. https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8632688

I hope this info helps someone else.

Thanks to netkas, mroy and everyone else who posted here.

Hi all! Got mine Asus EN GTX275 working dual dvi full qe ci on snow leopard 32 bit 10.6.2! Is it still interesting for someone? can post a manual.

Ok, so I'm sure it's in this thread here somewhere, but I must have missed it.

But I'm planning on using a gt120 in slot 3 and gtx 285 in slot 1 which seems it will work. But my question is, will both ports on the gtx work as dual link to run two 30" screens.

Acquire these 2 files at http://netkas.org/?p=109 Go to post 24 -- both links are shown there.

1. Acquire NVIDIA_Retail_Mac_Driver_Installer_18.5.2f16.mpkg.zip
2. Acquire Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg

Instructions:

1. Install the Enabler -- do not boot
2. Install the Driver -- do not boot

Driver Info.plist mod (1 file):

## /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV50Hal.kext/Contents/Info.plist

Look for NVidiaRM and insert the following with the other ids:
0x05eb10de&0xfff8ffff

This is what I did. This is great news as the EVGA 295 Co op Single PCB edition works with Leopard.

Hi
I'm an hackintosh user and I want to upgrade my video card (now is a 8400 GS); I'd really like to get an EVGA 295 but my motherboard has only one PCI express slot so I'm asking if you think it's possible to use your method in this case

Thanks,
and please forgive my english (learnt at school)

With a hackintosh, you don't have to use 2 video cards. That is a work around for us Apple owners to deal with, limitation of Apple's EFI stupidity.

You shouldn't have any problems with the 295 on a normal PC motherboard.

So I've got a GTX 285 card in my 08 Mac Pro with the Mac 8800GT as the helper card.

The GTX285 is in slot one and the 8800GT is in slot 3.

But in the info as per the attached screen cap the GTX 285 is showing up as being in an 8x slot, it is also showing 512mb despite being 1gb and it's not showing the attached screen.

Is all that normal, and is there a way to check what the speed actually is and the real memory amount being used.

It is definitely more capable than the flashed 4870 I had in my last Mac Pro. It can comfortably run COD4:MW at 2560x1200 where the 4870 struggled a little bit, so I'm assuming it's doing ok.

Not to mention it being a hell of a lot quieter than the 8800GT

The memory question has been dealt with here before, you will need to read the thread completely.

The 8X slot thing is interesting, I have found that this will sometimes change between boots.

Ultimately, benchmarks are going to answer the important questions.
