I don’t think peleton could fight it or survive a class action suit.I’m also a bike+ owner who bought the bike solely because of GymKit functionality. I’m really upset by this.
I’d consider joining a class action lawsuit against Peloton.
That’s assuming it would be granted class status, which it wouldn’t.I don’t think peleton could fight it or survive a class action suit.
Peleton, like every other company wants your data. Apple GymKit, HomeKit etc allow you to collect data on your devices and store it with end to end encryption in the Appleverse and not shared with anyone. This is why there are fewer devices that support HomeKit and GymKit. The manufacturers are not content with the profit they make selling the devices. They want to monetize your data too.
I don't think anyone would win a class action lawsuit against Peloton as it doesn't sound like they are removing it, more not adding support for GymKit in newer models. However as soon as the version new Peloton unit comes out without GymKit, the 'lawsuit' begins. Meaning people aren't going to buy it and after a few months of lax-luster sales, a 'firmware' update will come out to support GymKit again.
+1 I go to Lifetime and love that I can tap the watch on the device to sync them.My Lifetime Fitness has GymKit on bikes, treadmills, etc. Works great. I do not own a Peloton.
Poor decision by Peloton, but I'm gonna put some of the blame on Apple as well. They can't just throw these SDKs out into the world with minimal support and expect third parties to continue to develop and maintain them if their end users don't know about them.
I didn't have to pay an extra fee for the times I've used GymKit on a machine.Apple GymKit is complete nonsense. It is nothing else than an artificial blocker, so you have to buy and pay license fees to Apple.
Under the hood it is just NFC and BLE combinded to do a standard OOB pairing initiated by NFC. On top of it sits an evil Timmy telling everyone that you owe Apple money, if you want to sync data from or to the AW.
GymKit integration synced more metrics and made the calorie calculation a lot more accurate (With GymKit it was 1 kcal ~= 1kj, which is reasonable, without it, it registers as almost 3kcal/kj for me which is crazy). You lose things like power, cadence, ftp, etc syncing to Apple Health, which was the only way to see long-term trends in power output since the Peloton app/UI/website doesn't show that.GymKit was only available on the Bike+. For the original Bike - they added Apple Watch integration through their Peloton watch app. I don't have GymKit, so I'm not sure if the functionality is exactly the same - but that support made me not want a Bike+, and happy with my Bike.
Can someone that knows explain the difference between GymKit and the Peloton watch integration which I assume isn't going away?
I'm able to look into Health app and see my heart rate from the Peloton activity - so I'm curious if this is a nothing burger announcement?
Good because I’ll be cancelling my sub if they go through with this.I don’t think peleton could fight it or survive a class action suit.
Me also with that question.Curious, what percentage of fitness fans religiously check the data tracked by this type of tech?
There is a sizable PowerZone community (and a lot of PZ classes), and a lot of us do care about being able to see trends in power output and such over time.Curious, what percentage of fitness fans religiously check the data tracked by this type of tech?
A lot was ignored back then... Little mention of getting your body in shape kept you healthy.Just like App Clips. I am surprised this was not used more during the pandemic.
What brand?I've actually been looking to into getting a stationary bike to keep inshore during the non-MTB season (yes, I'm only a fair weather rider), And this was a much have feature, I was on the fence about Peloton anyway, because of the price. A buddy of mine has been getting into it pretty hard with another brand, using Garmin and swears by having power and all those metrics, says they are a must. Glad I saw this announcement, before committing to Peloton.
