The main issue with USB-C is durability. We've all heard of loose USB-C ports on MacBook. It's a well known issue with Android. Hopefully, we'll get longer lasting ports, but I wouldn't count on it.

I love the move to be honest. I wish they did it at the 13 but, really it’s not a killer feature. I have tons of lightning in cars and home that isn’t not a big deal. But I do look forward when I get another iPhone that it’s usb-c. However I’m just bummed the mini is going to be discontinued and that to me is a bigger issue as someone who is interested in technology health and wellness and reducing my use of my iPhone I don’t want anything that occupies too much space in my pocket enticing me to stare at the screen. No thanks.

I was going to upgrade this year, but a phone with usb-c is very tantalising. People are saying usb-c cables and connections are not great, but that has not been my experience, whereas I will be pleased to say goodbye to Lightning forever. However, if usb-c is introduced next year, that will make my XS Max five years old. It still seems good right now, but another 18 months? I don't know. Having seen my wife's usb-c iPad Pro, though, I don't want another Lightning phone

Right I love usb-c. I’m on a trip right now and one cable to charge my iPad mini, iPhone, DJI drone, and power bank. Only thing that needs a different cable is my Apple Watch.

Well, it depends on how often you connect your iPhone to your Mac. I for one, rarely do as I do AirDrop of the pictures to my Mac.

Yeah I'm starting to notice this on my GoPro hero 7. It wiggles and is slightly lose now. As simple as the connection is, it's doesn't seem to be made for long term. Have a feeling there will be an update to this to make it better.

USB-C is not meant for multiple uses like USB-A is. It's a bummer that the whole port was redesigned instead of working with the same USB-A port and make it work as originally intended.

Just curious where the statement that usb-c isn’t designed for multiple uses come from lol. It’s a connection port for charging and data transfer isn’t that the definition of multiple uses?

If a port is become "loose" for several people, then it means the design was meant for a more stable use, not for plugging and unplugging. USB-A, in my experience, tends to stay as "tight" as possible even with a barrage of disconnects/connects.

I am not talking about data transfer/charging on the same cable btw.

I don't think we will see a USC-B on an iPhone 14. Since the industrial design has already been finalized. USC-C will be here for iPhone 15. We still are almost 1 1/2 years away.

More about all this clamouring for USB-C on iPhones seems to boil down to:
Primary reason to want USB-C on iPhone : 1 single cable to charge all my devices.
Secondary: because again #1.

Yet nobody is talking about any real world gains to be had.

1. Faster charging speeds via PD2/3 protocols.
- which will Apple use if and when they choose to go to USB-C?
- why can’t the faster charging speeds be accomplished on an updated lightning port connector? If Apple did this in iPhone 15 onward would the need to USB-C really matter?

2. Data
- would Apple support iPhone via DisplayPort over USB-C to display iPhone on an external monitor like we can on iPads?
VERY doubltful of this since it would pretty much kill a few sales for the iPad mini 6 which I’d love.
^ I’d love to have my iPhone extend onto my 34” display, even if letter boxed and connects my Apple TrackPad SG & Satechi Mac-like full keyboard via Bluetooth.

- would Apple support faster data sync speeds via Finder for macOS and what about Windows+iTunes?
^ what would be the point? What’s the REAL gain over using WiFi that Apple has had for months before Android!?

For me … and mostly for professional videographers/photographers using the iPhone pro models would be:
Display iOS via USB-C on an external monitor.
Pro’s would LOVE not only rapid access to ProRES videos taken on iPhone Pro models to quickly view on a high-end HDR supported external LCD, but also to set up default video/camera settings from Final Cut Pro and export them as default settings on your iPhone for ProRES or regular pics and BOOM you have your full kit ready. Export the settings: take your pics/videos. Import the video back over USB-C into your Mac Pro/Mac Studio/iMac Pro/MBP and less post editing needed.

THAT would be a great REAL world reason for USB-C on iPhone Pro’s, imho.

I charge my iPhone every day by wire, so the change to USB-C would negatively affect me. On paper, USB-C is supposed to be more durable, but in reality the opposite is true. You can pull out an iPhone 5 and the Lightning cable will still snap into place.

Oh same here. I don't use the MagSafe feature on my 12 Pro as it charges too slowly for my taste. However, I never unhook the USB-C cable from the wall power brick.

I got the 13 Pro with pledge I’ll hold on to it for year then give it away, silently hoping 14 "Pro" will finally get USB-C.

Silly me. Bigger sensors and slightly larger battery are always welcome, an upgrade no doubt. I will get it. Let’s say I won’t to be very enthusiastic about it.

Imagine the day you can charge your iPhone, iPad, Mac and Airpods with single brick and cable. The day you can use your Mac and iPad USB-C dongles, the day you can quickly copy your camera footage to an external SSD ready to edit it on Mac or iPad. The day they go portless they lose will more than this one customer. Luckily I live in EU where common sense decides what’s good for the environment and the customer.
I’ve got a X and I am not upgrading till either it stops receiving software updates or the latest iPhone supports USBC

Are we 100% certain this year's iPhone won't get type C? Think about it. The EU are forcing apple to move to the connector, and that directive is already happening soon. Like, probably within the next 6 months. Why would Apple release a lightning iPhone this year, only to have to refresh it in 6 months to comply with the new law? Also, with rumours saying this year's iPhone will get 8k video recording, USB 2 lightning speeds on the pro models make no sense whatsoever. It's already too slow with 4k.

It's a really tough decision to me whether I'll upgrade. I'm rocking an iPhone X, battery isn't what it used to be and I really want an upgrade, but type C FINALLY coming to the iPhone is the only thing I really want. However, I also think it's silly to base buying decisions based on rumours, since there's always the chance Apple will instead ditch the port entirely and go wireless.
Yeah there’s that. If they go portless with 15 I wouldn’t know what to do. I wish not to switch to Android. But I just couldn’t send wirelessly gigabytes of video footage, it’s slow and unreliable (even AirDrop).

Upgrade to a new device just for a port? No.
Eventually if it become 1 port to rule them all great, and we can forget about all these different ports long term, even better.
I think USB-C will be a major upgrade for a lot of people, especially if you shoot a tons if video on Pro models. But it’s really hard to tell which way will Apple go, USB-C or portless, even with the Kuo clues. Each would mean a pretty major iPhone redesign, and would affect millions and millions of people. Lighting as of now only annoys a small percentage of people like me.
They can go two ways:
1. Annoy regular customers with USB-C:
- "Hun, I forgot my cable at home, can pass me yours?" *Hun passes older lighting cable* -"Ffff!"
2. Annoy regular customers and annoy pro users with MagSafe

Unless something shattery happens (knock wood) I will be holding onto my 11 for a compelling upgrade reason. I've never been a regular update person.

Went from the 1st gen to 3gS, then held out for waterproofing, then for Face ID. Now it feels close enough to wait for USB-C.

I agree - although reports abound that usb-c connections are not good, my experience is like yours - no problems.

My 5-year-old Nintendo Switch has been plugged and unplugged from its USB-C dock more times than any phone in that time. Both controllers have falled apart but the USB port is still in one piece. Ditto all my chargers, Laptop and Android devices. Also the iPad Pro has been fine.

WHY????? Not have a choice!!!!!

Make to models one with USB-C for those that need that fast transfer speed and one with the tried and True easy to connect multi cable owning not caring about T speed able to hold the iPhone by the charging cord without disconnecting loving there lightening cable consumer of Apple products

It was only a matter of time before Apple put USB C ports on their iPhones. They already updated their Macbooks/Macs and IPad Pro/Air lines to USB C, and love to highlight how good USB C is for connectivity/transfer speeds/Video etc. By keeping lightning on their iPhones it makes them look a bit hypocritical (we all know it was kept on for MFi licensing fees), so just makes sense to unify all their product lines to USB C.

In terms of durability, USB C has proven to be so much better in terms of fit/build quality than the trashy Mini USB ports that Android phones had prior, so Apple obviously consider it good enough for their iPhones.

After coming to iOS from being on Android since the beginning, and going through a huge cluster you know what with Google’s Pixel 6Pro, POS weak modem, my 13 Pro Max handles charging with a top of the line Anker 30W Nano and their very best USB C to Lightning cable. Very satisfied and not looking to upgrade any time soon. The current phone and charging work just fine.

I have read a lot of funny things about people and Europe, but this is in a good position on the ranking.

People want usb-c to do what? People don’t even know what usb-c is.

They use lightning as before they used the 30 pin dock, nothing changes: when it arrives, if it arrives, iPhone will be able to charge with a usb-c cable, and what changes? Nothing. Official Apple adapters have existed for years to charge iPhones with any cable from other manufacturers, as well as adapters from other manufacturers.

Europe on this issue is just trying to make others stop making fun of it: it has been legislated in this regard for years but Apple ridicules it, which is why it has made it a point of pride.

The environment? Nobody cares about the environment, until it is directly affected by the trouble it has helped cause.

To me, the 13 Mini is the perfect phone. I plan on keeping it for years. Before the 13 mini I had a 2016 SE so I am able to hold out on one device for a few years. USB-C won‘t change that.

That being said I welcome the decision to get rid of lightning. It‘s about time.
