Is the problem with USB-C durability exclusive to Apple then? I had USB-C on a Samsung tablet I used for over a year, and it was plenty strong and dependable.

Matches my experience with all of my USB-C equipped devices (currently all non Apple devices mind you).

We have several USB-C equipped devices in my household (headphones, wife's phone, wife's tablet, my work laptop, wife's work laptop etc). My work laptop in particular is charged via the USB-C port 5-6 days a week (and has done so for the last 3 or so years). No issues to report. It's really nice to be able to charge (and transfer data where necessary) multiple devices across multiple brands using just 1 cable.

That being said, I haven't had any issues with the USB-C port on Apple devices either. Think the durability issue for USB-C is no different to the durability of the lightning port or the lightning cable: it's a mass produced product, so you're bound to have failures and subsequently people questioning the durability of said product.

Agreed.

I didn't upgrade from my 12 Pro Max last year, so will most likely go ahead with a purchase this year.

I get that lightning vs USB-C is a big deal for some, but really doesn't make any difference to me one way or another. I use my phone during the day, and then sit it on a wireless charger when I go to bed, so will make zero difference.

Some of it will depend on the user side, like misalignment and debris. Others include tolerance to out of spec cables. Overall, my gut feeling seems to be we hear a lot more about loose and worn USB-C ports compared to Lightning.

The iPhone 14 will not have USB-C, which I am happy about. Lighting is smaller, and charges my AirPods, ATV remote, iPhone, iPad and headphones. Why people want USB-C, other than data transfer (in the era of wireless), is strange to me.

For exactly the same reason you like lightning: you can charge multiple devices using 1 cable (and paired with a half decent charger at a much faster rate). Not everyone is as heavily invested in Apple products as you appear to be.

Outside of a few select devices Apple sells with a lightning port, USB C is fast becoming (if not already) the defacto port.

Better (IMO) to have 1 port which can charge all devices (both Apple and non-Apple devices) than a mixture...

For example, in my household I have a mixture of device brands (Samsung phone, Samsung Tablet, Sony headphones, Jabra earbuds, Dell laptop, Microsoft Surface book laptop, Anker powerbank, Apple iPhone).

Guess which one doesn't charge using via USB-C?

Hint: It's name is also a type of fruit...

I will welcome usb c for cables in my tech bag alone but will still use MagSafe each night either way

This “Apple poor durability“ is alien to me. while not foolish enough to generalise all cases, a lot of durability comes down to the respect a user treats their device with.

My 12” Macbook from 2015 didn’t have the logic board issue, the screen issue, the keyboard issue, the trackpad issue, or this USB-C issue. I fear with all these general standards that it puts the port in the hands of general public, so we will see many bad stories from those who just intend to upgrade after a year or simply do not care about their tech.

This computer was my daily for my entire time at University, I wasn’t “precious“ with it either, but the investment meant something to me as a student who could not easily replace it. I wrote countless essays on that keyboard too!

If USB C comes to iPhone, the people this forum typically attracts are unlikely to face such issues as we care about tech. And for those that do, Apple will replace the port within warranty.
