Well my clock says it's a new day, and as I'm out tomorrow night I should post another. I was trying to capture the motion with this one but had two issues. The white sails are somewhat lost against the white (grey) sky, and without an ND filter trying to not over expose it with such a long shutter speed.

F22, 1/6th of a second, ISO 100. Could I have done anything different?

For a single exposure without a ND filter, I think you did your best with all the right settings.

The only other thing you could try next time is layering multiple 1/6 sec. exposures (I think you have the NIK plugins). However, the blur is likely to look very inconsistent.

Another suggestion...ND filters don't have to be expensive or complicated to get the effect or for the sake of experimenting. You could try to find a scrap of welder's glass (probably pick it up for free) to put over the end of the lens.

Check this out AFB: Welder's glass ND filter

Edit: Keep in mind that full motion blur of the windmill blades will depict speed (think airplane propeller). This may not be the effect you're going for as windmills are often thought of in terms of calm stately grace.

Amazing little bird. It can defy gravity :)

Not quite gravity defying (I think this was in the fraction of a second before landing) but they are remarkably adept at manoeuvring head-down as their normal position. Lot of fun to watch.

From a photography standpoint - looks great!

From a more, umm... personal standpoint... PAGE 8!!!

In terms of losing the white against the white try coming back on a blue sky day or at sunset on a cloudy day.

If the sun manages to peak through the clouds it will either backlight/frontlight/sidelight the windmill separating it from whatever background you have.

Nice stuff. Tasteful which I assume you were going for. Personally I think you could have afforded more contrast in the skin as there are some darks but not too many bright highlights other than the back wall.

Great first effort though!

Haven’t posted in a while but here is a still from a video I shot last year which was finally released this week.

I think I can get away with posting as it is a 12mpx shot!

thanks!

I see your point regarding contrast and highlights and they are taken into consideration for future reference. I've also been told that a photographer is evaluated by his blacks, and that is definitely absent in this set.

Another one from Sunday. I'm not really sure what qualifies this church to be in a museum of old buildings? In the UK we are blessed with a variety of beautiful churches. This looks like a church made from a recycled shed! Anyway I kind of liked it as a photo with the guy putting out the sign to add some interest. Comments always welcome.

It's a 'tin tabernacle'.

The church in Rydal (William Wordsworth lived next door)...

One to impress you guys over the pond today. A bunch of Civil War re-enactment enthusiasts over in the UK. Who'd have thought it. They certainly draft them in young don't they?

My grandad loves this stuff. I've never understood why people in The South get so excited about re-enacting the Civil War! lol and I'm even more baffled by this, but I got a chuckle out of it! Thanks for sharing.

There's a place in Buckinghamshire called the Chiltern Open Air Museum which has a church built like that which I took some photos of last summer.....

It's a pretty cute little thing. I'm guessing the one you found is from a similar era.

I actually remembered your shots when I saw the building.

Thanks for the feedback. I know I need the filter, but I'm picking up a few new lenses in a few weeks (hopefully), so have been waiting to make sure I get the right size. I'll check out the link though.

Welcome back! Hope you have a few more for us.

The biggest issue facing landscape photographers is getting the location and weather to coincide with when you have spare time.

I prefer this traditional church to the tin tabernacle.

Is it just me or are you guys also logging in here to see more of the hummingbird pictures?

They are awesome!

Ken.

Thanks, Ken -- The hummingbirds are fun subjects to pursue. I'm sure they are not to everyone's tastes, but I am glad you are enjoying them. I look forward to logging in (most) every day to see what everyone else has been working on. From astrophotography to zoos and from studio lighting to street photography, there is always something to draw inspiration from.

one more incredible shot!!

though the bird's tail part looks like mantis shrimp :D

Thanks, needfx. It definitely has a shrimp tail thing going -- I thought yesterday's looked a bit like a shrimp with wings and a beak, as well...

I really like this one, DirtySocks. The eyes and expression draw you in, and there is just enough of a catchlight/reflection in the lower (left) eye to keep it from getting lost. And its coloring gives it the feeling of a frame within a frame. Nicely done.

Been trying to get a shot of this for three days now but the bloody wind spoils the sharpness every time! This is the best I could do.
