That is awesome! Love the background colour and the lighting in gorgeous.

Thanks, MacRy! I saw some hummingbird photos on Flickr that were shot against a red background and I really liked the way that it went with the green in the feathers, so I decided to give it a go. I used a dark red fleece jacket as the backdrop.

Nice bold colours. Cant help but ask if it might have been an option to shoot lower and slightly right to get some seperation of the main bud from the leaves to make it stand out more?

Thanks. I'll try that. It's just shot with an iPhone so the DOF is not as shallow as I would like.

Over there------->
There's a beautiful balance and symmetry to this photo which I very much enjoy, with the landforms being echoed by the clouds, both horizontally and vertically. That's amazing. The light is beautiful too and you've brought out some wonderful detail in the sky.

I enjoyed the background story as well, it brings the photo to life. Do you wait out a whiteout like that or have a compass with you?

I typically only carry my compass when I'm out in wilderness areas where I may lose sight of directional markers. I never expected that to be the case on the dunes, so I just had a GPS app on my phone to guide me that day. For some strange reason (electricity in the air?), the needle on it was swinging wildly after the clouds descended, and I had to rely on my own sense of direction to get back to the car. It was quite interesting, to say the least!

At any rate, thanks for your kind words! The mirrored curves in the composition between sky and land are what I most enjoy about it as well.

Thanks for that P. You must have a good sense of direction thank goodness. Given the size and weight of a small compass, it could live in your bag. Wouldn't like to think of you getting lost! Or, for situations like that how about a very long piece of string. You tie one end to your car … :)
