How do you like the 50-200 along with the TC? It’s on my shortlist, though I may go get the PL100-400 instead. I use the long end a lot on my 100-300.

I had thought very seriously about the 100-400 when I bit the bullet for m43 . But looking back over the years , there was very few times that I wished for something longer than my 100-400L w/ 1.4 . The 50-200 by itself is very nice , you can hand hold it no problem , plus the dual IS does a good job enabling those shots you really shouldn't try , but do anyway . The 1.4 doesn't seem to noticeably degrade the image quality , nor does it add much weight/length to the 50-200 . It's godawful expensive ,though . So far , I've never missed not having a tripod ring for tripod use. I went on my more or less annual Spring bird photo trip to the Forsythe NWR near Atlantic City today . Kind of a haul for me , but it relieved me of some cabin fever as all the state/county/and many local parks are shut down around here .I'll post a number of additional bird pix over the next few days . All were taken with the 50-200+1.4 , at or near maximum extension , and hand held . Plus they're substantially cropped .

All this is just electrons on a screen , though . Maybe renting the 100-400 for a few days would answer more questions .

Well, I've tried it on a Velbon so-called heavyweight tripod, and a Manfrotto, but it still wobbles a bit, so I need to spend more on a proper decent concrete tripod ;)

Cheers :)

Hugh
The only really heavy duty tripods are made by Gitzo. At full height - close to eight feet - they will carry the weight of a man without buckling, and will stand without a tremor under a Sinar P, 5x4 view camera. Overkill, really, for a DSLR :)

I’m very close to buying one, so I may be able to let you know. I pretty much never shoot from a tripod, so I’m relying on my arms to do the work with my 100-300. It’s not a bother most of the time, but if I add another pound? It gets more interesting. Still, that lens isn’t terrible for weight for the reach it provides. I could really see the 50-200 as a versatile lens too. 50 is short enough for portraits, and the minimum focal distance isn’t bad either.

One thing I did find out today is that my percentage of 'keepers' went way up if I focused using the center magnified focusing aid . I've got the 2 buttons on the front by the grip programmed to activate this . Took a tripod and release along today intending to go up on one of the viewing towers at the refuge and try to get some good osprey nest closeups or , maybe get lucky with some diving terns , but the towers were closed for some unknown reason , so had to shoot hand-held and from ground level .

Though I stated that I was combining two hobbies (photography & grilling), some didn’t seem to care for my food pics. Here is something different...last year, my wife’s brother who was killed in the Viet Nam war, was honored by the NASCAR Smithfield racing team last Memorial Day by displaying his name on the car during the Charlotte race. i took this pic of the family, driver, and car...

You should post whatever photos make you happy. ? I love this thread and group because there are so many diverse interests. If food photography is your thing, then post those. This is a sharing thread, not a critique thread (unless specifically asked for).

But what a nice tribute to your BIL in this photo.
