Yes, this lens can focus on subjects close-by. Have you used the 1.4x extender with the RF 100-500? I have to decide if buying an extender for the RF 100-500, of the existing EF lenses I already have. I am keeping the EF lenses, but I already purchased the RF lens (above).

Been thinking about it, but wasn't particularly happy with the results with an extender on my EF lenses. I have the 2x extender (v III) but the quality of the results was somewhat affected. There's always som "cost" using those. In Sweden the 1.4x RF extender costs $812 and i don't want to just buy it without testing it first (this time, that is)
Next lenses I'll purchase is the upcoming RF 100mm Macro f/2.8 L (rumored to be released now in april), the RF 50mm f/1.2 and the RF 85mm f/1.2 (not the DF (or is it DS?)-version, it's in practical terms an f/2.0 lens)
