They have to be the 'clothes horses' of the insect world. I love dragon flies because no one seems to be the same. And they come in so many different sizes too. I had one that was HUGE land on my shoulder once, and it was so damn big, I think I screamed. I saw it out of the corner of my eye, and thought it was a small bird. Someone said 'Be careful! THEY BITE!!!' which I've found out isn't actually true, but that thing was big enough to leave a welt, and a story...

Their wings are just so amazing. So delicate, so strong. They are a conundrum, and I believe total badasses in the crowded insect world. They and praying mantis are two of my favorites. I will do everything I can to save a female mantis because I know there is a male out there waiting to give his live to have sex with her. Who am I to deny that?
It is possible that dragon flies don't bite, but they can be ferocious against each other as I found out last summer: I saw two very large dragon flies on the grass and decided to take a photo until I noticed that one had finished eating the head of the other. I was shocked since I had never seen such a thing.

On a tangent: I used to leave my back lawn grow out every few weeks. People complained about it. It was surrounded by a 4 food slatted wood fence, and I would see the bees and frogs frolicking in the higher grass. I also refused to use fertilizer and herbicides too. (Call me weird, but I had quite a menagerie in the backyard) And butterflies, and two years, a MASSIVE jumping spider that I caught once, sitting on the top of a blue spruce where her nest was, glaring at me, with a yellow jacket wasp in her mouth. 'Hey, I got nothing on you. You keep eating those damn wasps, I'll build you a custom home!'

We had butterflies too. I would put out post edible fruit, and the moths and butterflies would swarm most of it. Nature is so beautiful, if we just stop competing with the neighbors, and start competing to support it, we would all be so much better off... /SoapBox

I'm a sucker for chainsaw sculpture, especially the grizzly variety.

Looks like you were outside of the smokey part of the province. Right now the smoke from the interior of BC is hanging over SW Alberta like a funeral pall.
