Oh yes, put his nose at the bottom of the frame - that looks good! Thanks for your comments; all this helps me to learn and develop (no pun intended you dads out there )Personally, I think the framing with the sliver of foreground at the bottom is brilliant as it added a little bit of additional drama to the shot. All very subjective of course but I like to see people exploring composition away from the norm if it appears to be for a good reason.
Case in point...I think his shot of Sam (what a beautiful old guy!) could benefit from deviating from the rule of thirds in the same manner.
