Another flying ratbird photo. I was impressed that the G9 didn't lose them in the trees. Prior to the recent firmware update, this could have been trouble for the CDAF.

Geese Rule! :). I have yet to be able to catch my guys in a takeoff or landing......by the time I hear them doing one or the other it is already too late to grab the camera and get out there to capture the action.
Yeah, we get so many behind our house. They aren't that noisy, but they tear up the lawn and leave their feces everywhere--sidewalks and driveways included. By the end of winter, the field behind us is almost all mud! I guess we have just enough landscaping that they stay out of my backyard.

They are indeed less than charming when they leave their "souvenirs" on the boardwalk or walking trail around the lake! Everyone has to watch their step when walking around the lake, especially on the other side, the area across from where I am, because the geese tend to hang out there on the grass and the trail, as that is easier for them to get to from the lake than it is on my side..... Even at that, when I've been out for a walk around the lake, before I step back into my house, I always scrape my shoes on my doormat and check my shoes before I actually walk into my home. Geese are delightful and interesting to watch, but they are definitely messy creatures, too!

A hawk of some variety - maybe a younger Cooper's or perhaps a Broad-winged. Or... While I lean more towards a Broad-winged, I wouldn't bet my life on it (the tail isn't quite right) :). Because raptors have light and dark morphs and are distinctive when younger or older and because the prairie light and habitat can be challenging, I find them particularly hard to identify. Regardless, they're always fun.

We have a lot of bird feeders in our backyard, so Sharpies and Cooper's often make an appearance. We also have a Red-tailed Hawk couple that breeds a block away from our house. Interestingly, the squirrel population decreased last year during breeding season:cool:.

Spent the weekend in Eugene, OR and stopped by the Cascades Raptor Center. They do amazing work rehabilitating predator birds and housing ones that can't be released.

I meant to mention this earlier and then got distracted and forgot.....these are nice images and the backstory is interesting, but.... actually, @R.Perez the Photo of the Day thread is just that: just one photo shared per day; it can be something new or it can be something from one's archives, but it can only be one photo on a given day in the thread.....

Almost gave the same reply but would like to add an observation/suggestion for @R.Perez benefit/education. Rather than list multiple, list one a day. That is 3 days of "Picture of the Day". I do that quite regularly with the daily trickle of an outing and the better part when going to attach a photo, it remembers the directory from yesterday minimizing searching. The one today is related to the outing to the ocean last Saturday posted over the past several days. Couldn't find whales with the rough seas, but had other opportunities - today's a nature walk which was part of picnic area where stopped for lunch (Matanzas National Monument). Todays, while the focus is on the path, it also shows the oak with the lichen which was the close-up (mid left edge area) posted yesterday.
