In 1990 we moved from CA to the Finger Lakes in NY. We had bought a 1843 cobblestone farm house on 4 1/2 acres. The original farm had 200 acres, the original family that had built and owned the property since the early 1800’s had managers who ran the dairy farm. We found many spots where they dumped trash and old vehicles. We found debris just outside the back door! It was common in those days to just abandon old equipment on a remote site on the property.
It’s quite a sight, I’ve seen other vehicles in the location as well we’ll take another walk as we usually do not pick some some photos of such places it’s quite interesting to see how such a Bandan lands just sit there without any other disturbance other than the plants foolish growing over them.

The ambient temperature was -23 degrees F. when taking photos of the Auroras last night (Sunday 26, 2023). The Auroras forecast was for a Kp 6 last night, and the same for tonight. However, the temperature forecast calls for -36 degrees, so I will stay home this time :)

Really outstanding shot. Where were you in Alaska for it?
Interior of Alaska, Fairbanks, and North Pole this time, not far from Chena Lakes. From where I was standing facing West with my left shoulder toward the South, the lights would be moving from a Southeast direction, toward a Northwest direction.

My wife and I spent several days up at Coldfoot, Wiseman and just north of Atigun Pass on the Dalton a few years back in the month of January, hoping to catch the Lights. No luck, but we had a great time of it. I love Alaska - great place!

There were rumours we might see them as far South as where I am in the UK last night, but nothing when I went out.

That most have been a great adventure. September and March are my favorite months. In September when taking photos of the Auroras near a lake for example, the lights are reflected by the water. And most times it is not as cold in March. I met a Korean photographer who would spend two or three months photographing the Auroras. He would rent a cabin near Summit Lake by the Richardson Highway. I met him a few years ago by one of the hills around Fairbanks. We communicated with a Korean/English translating app he had in his phone :)

I was out three hours, from 8:00 PM to 11:00 AK standard time. The lights were most active around 10:00 PM. But is was very cold so I had to leave my truck idling to keep the cabin warm the entire time. I would spend a few minutes outside, and then return to the cabin to warm up :)

Well I looked out, saw nothing and went to bed with an electric blanket. That’s why you get the shots and I don’t!

Mrs Darmok knows someone via instagram up there in Alaska, and they posted some shots of the AB last night that she was showing me. I told her there's a Moose that posts some fantastic shots of the AB in one of the photography subs I frequent. Good to see you didn't miss them either! Keep those antlers warm!

The good news after this outing is wife said "why don't you get yourself a decent lens for wildlife...not $10,000, but decent". Looks like a 200-600mm is in my future (not the 600mm prime!), and don't have to severely crop a 200mm like this one.

I also recently got the blessing to snag a few more lenses myself. The wonderful XF 35mm F2, and the UWA 10-24 F4. I bought them used from KEH, so not a massive outlay, but both are invaluable to my shooting style and subject matter. Hope you enjoy the new glass! :)
