Whoops... Sorry missed it. Went back though to find it. Worth looking for!

I really like images if the moon. Issue is that it leads to wanting to shoot deep space objects right? And for that, I have to start another expensive hobby... So I am going to continue to adore these shots...

Very nice and a good choice of phase.

It's ok! Yes, it does make you want to take other astronomy pictures. Like any hobby, it's only as expensive as you make it. I haven't spent anywhere near as much money on lenses as some people here. But I did purchase a Skytracking mount which allowed me to take the photo of the Orion Nebula I posted a couple weeks ago. I'm still learned how best to take and edit these types of photos. It's quite a bit of work, but it's a lot of fun too.

As for the phase, it's not very often that I'm up at 5:30AM taking moon photos, but it was worth it. ;)
I am an (extremely) amateur astronomer, but I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. It's the Orion Nebula, taken back in December.

Camera: Canon EOS Rebel T3i
Lens: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II
Exposure info: ISO 3200, 250mm, f/5.6, 15 secs x 20 exposures
Contrast, color, brightness adjustments, and cropping in Pixelmator.

Yep, been looking at the nebula shot. I think for this we are into the territory of 100-200 individual shots then stacked together using something like regstax right?

A tracking mount is a thing of beauty! For a self proclaimed beginner you are producing some real nice images!

More worrying is that he wasn't sleeping until I gave him some of my water.....

Wow incedible. You two are stunning me with these shots!

Thanks Ken. Night sky photography fascinates the hell out of me. Unfortunately, I have to drive 3 hrs each way to get a clear shot without light pollution.

Very, very nice shot! Point well taken, though I personally still prefer B&W. Was this taken with a telephoto lens or a telescope?

Thanks kallisti. This was taken with a lens at 700mm (500 & 1.4x extender).

Try tonal contrast in Color Efex Pro for B&W as well. When you want to emphasize every last tiny bit of detail, it does the job. It's not for every shot as it can result in an over-processed look but as you mentioned, exaggerated processing works for moon shots.

To me, the context makes it a much better shot, perhaps not the best background, but you got to live with what's there.

yes, I agree the context does give a bit more oomph to the shot. I had tried to get more of surrounding area into the first shot by lying down on the ground and shooting at the widest zoom setting but it only went out to the edge of the ceiling and didn't show any of the doors or windows. Of course that completely embarrassed my wife as she watched people passing by staring at the old geezer lying on the ground.

As promised, here's the best photo I got of the moon before I broke my telescope. Maybe some day I'll get it fixed.

Camera: Canon EOS Rebel T3i
Lens: Meade LX90-ACF 8" f/10 Telescope
Exposure info: ISO 100, 2000mm, f/10, 1/125 sec
Sharpened/de-noise/add saturation in iPhoto.

Belated reply, but nice!
