A different view from yesterday. Can’t imagine driving a large car from the 60’s when the bridge was active, or worse, meeting them when biking to the Keys...and those low railings. Also, that lone pipe was the fresh water supply from the mainland.

A group of “forcados” practicing their craft. 3 operated the wheeled “bull” while the others practiced wrestling it to a stand still. These young men descended from Azorians, and practice Portuguese bloodless bullfighting. They graciously let me attend this practice and after-party as part of my research for a novel I wrote ~10 years ago.

Drove this thing somewhere around 1972 or thereabouts . School was out and me and the at that time girlfriend drove to Florida , and after a week or so decided , 'What the hell , let's go to Key West ." So we did . Can't remember being too concerned over the railings . Was 22 or so and wasn't concerned about much of anything.

You must be a butterfly whisperer. If I can get to a butterfly before our cat gets it, they tend to fly away before I can get a shot.

Well to be fair, so far I've only seen two individual swallowtails; I know they arent' the same ones because of the way their wings are torn. So it's not like I have oodles of them. But they do seem to come around more this year than in years previous and I'm not sure why. I plant these same marigolds every year and have never seen a butterfly on them before yesterday; one was on this morning as well, but I didn't have a chance to go out to see if it was the same one.

Usually we just have a ton of cabbage whites. Next year I am going to research good butterfly plants and plant more. I thought they'd swarm to my zinnias, but I've only see one there one single day. Hoping more come back to that patch.

Looking at my archive, it would appear that August and September are the best months for butterflies, so maybe you'll see an uptick here shortly. Zinnias are good, as are aster, sedum, lantana, and of course, butterfly bush. Full sun and large plantings seem to be key as well. I'm hoping for more at my home too. Just today a yellow swallowtail passed through, but I have to keep my daughter from chasing them!
